  • OPEN LETTER to the Most Reverend STEPHEN CHMILAR, D.D., Eparch
OPEN LETTER to The Most Reverend STEPHEN CHMILAR, D.D. Eparch of Toronto and Eastern Canada September 27, 2007 RE: The new intended sale of the MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD MONASTERY Dear Bishop Stephen, Glory to Jesus Christ! We, the benefactors, financial supporters and extended spiritual lay community of the Most Holy Mother of God Monastery in Orangeville, Ontario, have learned from Your Grace's letter of notification to Father Marian Struc, the newly appointed spiritual leader of the Monastery, of the intention of the Eparchy to sell the Marian Shrine to the Coptic Orthodox Church as of January 14th, 2008. The main reasons given for the new sale are the ongoing mortgage arrears to the Cistercians, and the imminent danger of losing the Monastery to foreclosure. We would like to draw attention to three affirmations contained in this letter, which, according to our knowledge, do not reflect the true nature of the situation, and which require further explanation. 1. The clear attempt to degrade the true spiritual value of the Mother of God Monastery as an active Marian Shrine and place of ongoing pilgrimage, referring to it in the letter as a "mission parish". According to our information, a mission parish is characterized by definite privileges, such as the right to administer the Sacraments of Baptism, Marriage, and the celebration of funerals, while, at the same time, the activity is restricted in scope to its own membership. This is certainly not the reality of the Mother of God Monastery. As holy ground sanctified by many years of monastic prayer, the Monastery continues to function as an active eparchial Marian Shrine, characterized by the preservation of the Studite Tradition in its ongoing liturgical prayer, and its openness to all Christian pilgrims.

China Everbright Ltd. title sponsors “International Gala of Stars 2019” International Ballet Stars Yuan Yuan Tan, Dorothée Gilbert and Ako Konda Gather in Hong Kong 4 November 2019 – China Everbright Limited (“Everbright”, stock code: 165.HK) sponsored the “International Gala of Stars 2019”, a production by the Hong Kong Ballet, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Hong Kong Ballet. The performance took place from 31 October to 1 November 2019 at the Grand Theatre of Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. This year, the event was honoured to have many globally renowned ballet stars perform a series of astonishing classical and modern ballet performances alongside dancers with the Hong Kong Ballet, including Yuan Yuan Tan, a principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet; Dorothée Gilbert, French ballerina with the Paris Opera Ballet; Ako Kondo, a principal dancer with the Australian Ballet; Marcelo Gomes, international ballet star and a former principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre; Osiel Gouneo, a principal dancer with the Bavarian State Ballet; Vitor Luiz, a former principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet; and Matthew Golding, a guest performer with the Bavarian State Ballet as well as a former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet and Dutch National Ballet. • SIGNED 13 Artwork 0901
PUBLISHER’S NOTE ne of the greatest presidents of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, said that, ‘the great thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time’. How true this is. If the future was thrusted upon us in a ‘big bang’, we would miss the sublime experience of evolution. Let’s face it, who needs a big bang when we can move gradually ahead, savouring every moment of growth, improvement and the joy of change. Taking inspiration from the Belgian painter Rene Magritte, we see the future of design growth as “the sky” being the limit. InO this issue of SIGNED, we explore many of design’s next big things. But before you think we have created a fantasy magazine of whimsical proportions, our look into the future also has its heels firmly in the past. For we believe that creation, especially in design, is a progress built in layers. For example, we look at the extraordinary life of architect Zaha Hadid, and how she envisioned the future of Miami. We also find out the latest innovation of fabrics and design, to see how they are reshaping fashion. Eating out is not a new subject, but we are first in line to what we think will be the next big trend in Hong Kong – food trucks, and how others around the world have adopted this truly ‘moveable feast’. But let’s not forget about our local heroes, because they are also braving a new path to inspire Hong Kong’s future talents with their amazing work.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.
