Firefighters with the Ukiah Valley Fire District responded to reports of the fire at 1701 Talmage Road at around 6 a.m. Friday morning and found neighbors spraying water on flames coming out of the kitchen window of a single story apartment. “There was a lot of smoke and a little fire,” said UVFD Capt. Jay Beristianos. Once the flames were extinguished, fire- fighters found the body of John Hutchins, 38, of Ukiah, in the apartment. Deputies with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate the death. “We’re treating it as a suspicious death because it was a fire,” said MCSO Acting Capt. Kurt Smallcomb. The cause of the fire is unknown, but Beristianos said it appears to have started in the kitchen. The apartment shares a wall on each side with neighboring apartments, but the flames did not spread beyond the first apartment. Thomas Legg, who lives next door, said there was a small amount of smoke damage Sarah Baldik/The Daily journal to his apartment but no other damage.
