SPRINGFEST THIS WEEKEND AT THE FAIRGROUNDS Fatal fire at Talmage apartment By BEN BROWN The Daily Journal One man was killed in a Friday morning apartment fire that damaged a Talmage area apartment but did not spread to attached structures. Firefighters with the Ukiah Valley Fire District responded to reports of the fire at 1701 Talmage Road at around 6 a.m. Friday morning and found neighbors spraying water on flames coming out of the kitchen window of a single story apartment. “There was a lot of smoke and a little fire,” said UVFD Capt. Jay Beristianos. Once the flames were extinguished, fire- fighters found the body of John Hutchins, 38, of Ukiah, in the apartment. Deputies with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office were called to investigate the death. “We’re treating it as a suspicious death because it was a fire,” said MCSO Acting Capt. Kurt Smallcomb. The cause of the fire is unknown, but Beristianos said it appears to have started in the kitchen. The apartment shares a wall on each side with neighboring apartments, but the flames did not spread beyond the first apartment. Thomas Legg, who lives next door, said there was a small amount of smoke damage Sarah Baldik/The Daily journal to his apartment but no other damage. GIANTS 10 | NATIONALS 1 Lincecum wins 4th straight as Giants cruise WASHINGTON (AP) — Tim Lincecum pitched seven sharp innings to win his fourth straight decision, Jose Castillo hit a three-run homer and the San Francisco Giants beat the Washington Nationals 10-1 on Friday night. Lincecum (8-1) didn’t allow a hit until Lastings Milledge singled with two outs in the fourth. He gave up one run and five hits, struck out five and walked none. The Giants backed Lincecum with seven runs in the third, capped off by Castillo’s fifth homer of the season. Jason Bergmann (1-3) walked Lincecum with the bases loaded to force in one run, Fred Lewis had a two-run single and Ray Durham also singled in a run. Castillo came up with runners on first and third and two outs. He popped a ball into foul ground behind first base. Aaron Boone approached the stands and the ball slid off his glove for an error. Given a reprieve, Castillo hit a drive into the right-center field bleachers to make it 8-0. The seven-run third was the Giants’ biggest inning of the season. Omar Vizquel had a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Bengie Molina added an RBI single in the eighth for San Francisco. Elijah Dukes had an RBI double for Washington, which has lost eight of 11. Bergmann allowed eight runs — five earned — and 10 hits in three innings. He walked two and struck out none.
