Press Release: Maharashtra Stands Firm on Border Dispute Issue At Supreme Court New Delhi, July 7: The States’ Reorganization Committee’s recommendations to form the states according to their social and cultural fabric, should be made applicable to Maharashtra and the State Government’s stand is firm on restoring all the 865 villages wrongly attached to Karnataka as mentioned in the Supreme Court, asserted the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Ashok Chavan in the Capital today. In a series of engagements and his busy schedule, the Chief Minister called upon the Union Home Minister, P.Chidambaram and Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee. While addressing the media at Maharashtra Sadan, after all the meetings, he clarified the State Government’s stand in the Maharashtra-Karnataka Border Dispute and regarding the Supreme Court suit pending in this matter. Many important matters were taken up for discussion with the Home Minister, of which the major issue discussed was of the Maharashtra- Karnataka Border Issue, informed Chavan. There are 865 villages, which have been wrongly attached to Karnataka. These villages should be restored back to Maharashtra on the basis of geographical contiguity, Linguistic and Cultural Homogeneity and the keen desire of people to return to Maharashtra, informed Chavan. For this, continuous and consistent efforts have been taken at our end to approach the Union Government before moving to the Supreme Court, informed the chief minister. The criteria put forth by the States’ Reorganization Committee in 1953 to form the States’ as per the people’s desire and other geographical conditions should also be applied today in resolving this issue. The sentiments of the marathi speaking people living in Karnataka should be taken care of, requested Chavan to the Home Minister. Chavan reiterated that, we are firm on our stand in the Apex Court as well. Informing about his meeting with the Union Finance Minister, the chief minister said discussions regarding GST, Taxation and other related issues were taken up. The Central Government has called for the Uniformity from all States to agree and reach a common consensus. The State Finance Minister, Sunil Tatkare accompanied him at the meeting. In other meetings, he called on UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, Union Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar and Union Defence Minister, A.K.Antony informed Chavan. ************* .
