Problems of Salination of Land in Coastal Areas of India and Suitable Protection Measures

K. Puram, New Delhi-110066 FOREWORD Salinity is a significant challenge and poses risks to sustainable development of Coastal regions of India. If left unmanaged, salinity has serious implications for water quality, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, supply of water for critical human needs and industry and the longevity of infrastructure. The Coastal Salinity has become a persistent problem due to ingress of the sea water inland. This is the most significant environmental and economical challenge and needs immediate attention. The coastal areas are more susceptible as these are pockets of development in the country. Most of the trade happens in the coastal areas which lead to extensive migration in the coastal areas. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt. -

Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology ISSN No : 1006-7930 Sustainable Habitat Plan for Conservation of Hilly areas: A Case Study of Kannur District, Kerala State G. Sooraj, Doctoral Student and Planner Associate, Town and Country Planning Department, Government of Kerala, Kerala. Dr. H.S. Kumara Assistant Professor, Urban and Regional Planning, School of Planning and Architecture, University of Mysore, Mysuru-570006. Karnataka. Naveen k Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Genstru Consultants Pvt Ltd, Pune 111045 Maharashtra Abstract: Landslides are geographically related disasters occurring in hilly regions causing huge damage to land use, infrastructure and human life. Sustainable Habitat Plan for conservation of hilly areas in India is imperative to free from natural calamities such as landslides and flooding. Kerala State faced the worst flood and landslides after 1924 during the month of august in 2018 and 2019. Almost all parts of the state, except the north and south ends has got affected by this natural calamity. The heavy rain in Kannur district had caused landslides which left many hilly parts of the district isolated from other areas. Due to this catastrophe, more than 500 people have lost their life and approximately 5000 relief camps were setup throughout the state. This study is mainly based on secondary sources of data and visual survey of selected landslides areas and laboratory testing of soil samples in the study area. This paper provides information about the landslides occurred in hilly areas of Kannur district and significance of geotechnical engineering for Sustainable Habitat Plan to mitigation and control of natural disasters for conservation of Hilly areas. -
