Warrenton Receives USEF Heritage Competition Status From the USEF Communications Department Lexington, KY – The Warrenton Horse Show, hosted by the Warrenton Horse Show Association, has been honored with the United States Equestrian Federation’s designation as a USEF Heritage Competition, the highest honor currently held by any Federation horse show. The designation of a USEF Heritage Competition is reserved for competitions that have been in existence for a quarter-century or more, promoted and grown equestrian sport, and made contributions to the community outside the gates of the horse show by achieving, maintaining, and promoting the equestrian ideals of sportsmanship and competition. Founded in 1899, the Warrenton Horse Show Association is the oldest continuously operating corporation in Virginia and represents the interests of horse show enthusiasts, competitors, horse breeders and the community of Warrenton, Virginia. The five-day show offers a variety of competition classes including ladies sidesaddle, hunters, jumpers, hunting pairs and more. The Warrenton Horse Show benefits several organizations, including the Fauquier Health Foundation, the Fauquier Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Bright Stars, the Make A Wish Foundation and other local charities. “The Warrenton Horse Show is one of the oldest equestrian exhibitions of its kind in the United States,” said USEF Chief Executive Officer John Long. “With its long tenure and many charitable contributions, both national and local, the show exemplifies everything the USEF looks for when designating a Heritage Competition.”

(12) In Memoriam George Willis WILLIS, George Clifton Jr. “Rootie,” age 67, of Varina, passed away suddenly on February 23, 2015. He was the son of the late George C. Willis and Ruby June Trainham. He is survived by his wife, Susan Peters Willis; children, Tricia, George III, Gregory, Geoffrey (Carley) and Sarah; grandchildren, Crissi, Cullen and Garrit; brother, Philip (Cindy); and sister, Beverly (Wilfred). George founded GW Sound and for 49 years of his life provided sound reinforcement services and established many meaningful friendships among his colleagues and customers who came to trust and depend on him. His three sons will proudly carry on the legacy of the same quality of service for GW Sound that he continued to teach them through the years.  Phyllis Farland Phyllis Farland, long–time resident of Broad Run at her Laughing Fox Farm, passed away suddenly at her home in Rockport, Maine on November 2, 2014. She was 65. A well-known rider, coach, trainer and judge, Phyllis built her professional career in her beloved Virginia. Graduating from UCLA in 1971 with a degree in Political Theory, Phyllis immediately turned to the horse show world with passion. Her success, riding with Marcia Williams in Pasadena,CA, launched her promising professional business in New York and Virginia. Dedicated to the thoroughbred hunter, she and her students won frequently on the “A” circuit throughout the mid-Atlantic and in Florida and California in the 80’s and 90’s. As she wound down her showing, she worked with many of the top riders in the area. Several of her students and riders are now successful professionals in their own right. She capped her career as a well-respected “R” judge until her retirement in 2013. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 44 years, Bill Farland, and their latest in a 30 year line of standard schnauzers, Leo, who live in their homes in Rockport, Maine and LaQuinta, California. Phyllis was the consummate horse-woman, dedicated to her sport and her animals. She will be sorely missed by her friends and colleagues.  Mike Rowe The horse world has lost a well-known and much loved horseman. Mike was born February 22nd, 1946 in Redruth, and passed away May 8th, 2015. Mike was the personification of a true Horseman. Over the decades he was involved with many aspects of the horse world, as an owner, rider, handler, trainer, coach, show judge and breeder. His farm, Rowe Sport Horses bred and produced many top hunters and jumpers. Mike became one of the nations’ Top Handlers, earning many USEF Hunter Breeding Year End Awards. He was USEF Hunter Breeding Grand Champion Handler in 2000 and 2002. He handled “Obey” to the USEF Grand Champion Hunter Breeding Horse in 2000 and in 2002 the horse was Ground Zero Hero. He showed many hunter breeding horses and ponies to year end Championships with USHJ Zone 3, VHSA, MHSA and VPBA. He was always there at the three biggest hunter breeding shows, Devon, Uppperville, and Warrenton either in the ring competing or on the rail coaching. You could not find a better coach, guiding many riders and their horses and po- nies to earn year end Zone 3/VHSA/MHSA Championships. The table at the year-end awards banquets was always overflow- ing with a mountain of trophies and beautiful ribbons either earned by him or his students. Mike is survived by his children Dolly Young, Piper & Sammy Rowe and Gethin Kapoor. It was Mikes wish to have “a hell of a wake”, to raise a glass-or two, share memories and retell all the great stories from over the years. Gail Forrest and Jill Marshall will be holding an old fashioned Wake in his honor at their tail-gate party Hunt Night, friends are invited too stop by and raise a glass in his memory.

The International Hunter Futurity is a competition for young horses. The purpose of the program is to promote interest in and enthusiasm for breeding and showing quality hunters. The International Hunter Futurity provides a financially rewarding program with the highest money prizes ever offered in the hunter ring.

The IHF events are open to horses three years of age in 2015, which were sired by a nominated stallion and have maintained their eli- gibility according to IHF Special Conditions. Three classes are offered for the three year old performance section, two over fences and one under saddle.

The IHF Challenge Series, line classes for yearlings, two year olds and three year olds, was designed to promote hunter breeding and to give hunter breeders an opportunity to showcase their young stock.

The IHF Sweepstakes was designed to showcase four year olds which were previously eligible to compete in the IHF three year old program. Three classes, two over fences and one under saddle, are offered for the four year olds.

All IHF events are open only to horses which are by nominated stallions and which have maintained their eligibility according to the IHF rules.
