Callington, & neighbourhood

Callington is a market town in the middle division of East hundred; 216 miles from London, forty from Exeter, eleven from Launceston, and nine W. by S. from . The town has been considerably improved of late years; modern buildings have been erected in good taste, and premises for a national school have been built by voluntary subscriptions. The trade of the place is materially benefitted by the mines in the neighbourhood which are wrought profitably and furnish employment to a considerable number of persons. The town is governed by a port-rieve, annually chosen at the court leet of the lord of the manor. The borough returned members to parliament from the 27th of Elizabeth until the passing of the Reform Bill, when it was deprived of the elective franchise. Callington is a member of South-hill parish, about two miles distant, and has a large chapel of ease, dedicated to St Mary, within the precincts of the town, rebuilt in 1552, at the sole expense if Nicholas de Asheton Esq.; the chancel contains a fine monument to his memory. There are places of worship for various religious denominations. The Hotel is a well conducted establishment, affording every accommodation for families and commercial travellers. The market, held on Wednesday, is a well supplied one. Fairs, the second Thursday in March, the first Thursday in May, the first Thursday after September the 19th, and the second Thursday in November. Callington parish contained, in 1841, 1,685 inhabitants, and in 1851, 2,142. Calstock is an extensive parish, six miles E.S.W. [sic] from Tavistock, and five from E. Callington, situated on the . It contains many mines, which are worked to considerable advantage. The church, situated on an eminence, is dedicated to St Andrew. There are likewise places of worship for Baptists and Wesleyan Methodists. The seat of Sir William Trelawney is in the immediate vicinity. Population at the census of 1851, 4,530.
