In 2016, 2017 and 2018 they played in the USL but never took their sight off what they really wanted: an MLS franchise. Last fall the MLS awarded FC Cincinnati with a franchise to begin play in 2019. Why Soccer? When asked about why he went after a soccer franchise, Berding responded, “I B C played soccer growing up and loved it. My kids all played soccer as they grew up. We would travel to soccer games around the midwest and there would be 4,000 or 5,000 people at the games.”

Some additional reasons that soccer has exploded in the United States include: • It’s a world-wide sport that D E includes teams from nearly every country. • The cost for kids to play soccer is much less than other sports. All the kids need are a pair of tennis shoes and a ball. • Because the contact is so different than in football, the potential for injuries is much less in soccer. F IN THE FALL OF 2014, Berding put together a comprehensive business plan on how to go after an MLS franchise in Cincinnati. He took the concept to Bengals owner Mike Brown (at the time his employer) and explained how he thought having an NFL owner being the owner of the Cincinnati soccer team would give them a jump-start on getting an MLS franchise. Berding was turned down by the Bengals, as well as the and Bob Castellini. But Berding was not discouraged. He would eventually put his group of Lindner, Joseph and Farmer together and didn’t stop until they got their MLS franchise.

12 ULTIMATE / APRIL-MAY 2019 Biggest Challenges “There were a bunch of them,” explained Berding. “Just getting people to believe we could get a franchise was my first challenge. Finding the right partnership, raising the money, getting the right people on staff have all been challenges, but without a doubt the biggest challenge has been to find the right place to build our facility,” Berding said. “The right location, permits, etc., but when we’re done, I think we will have the GREATEST soccer facility in the world. It will be state-of- the-art.” The Money Berding’s hard work probably landed the 1 perfect investment group, led by Carl Lindner VOTED # GYM IN III, George Joseph and Scott Farmer. and Louisville.” The Futbol Club has also reached out to Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky youth programs to help the sport grow across the Tri-State. “We are doing as much as we can for all the youth teams in the area and we are currently sponsoring a youth girls development academy”, explained the FC Cincinnati President. “We believe in the kids”, stated Berding. “That’s where soccer will grow and grow, as more and more kids play the sport across the Tri-State.”

The Honeymoon FC Cincinnati has built a tremendous following over the past three years they played in the USL, and that following should only grow as they move into the MLS and soccer’s major league, the MLS. Berding has reported that the new stadium will be ready for the start of the 2021 season. That gives FC Cincinnati at least five years for the “Honeymoon”. Everyone will be excited to be part of the new facility,

and when it opens in 2021, the Futbol Club should have at least three more years of fan support at the minimum. With the state-of-the-art stadium and the first-class organization that Berding has put together, off-the-field FC Cincinnati should be in the upper echelon of MLS organizations. But by year five, the soccer team must be winning and be competitive to continue to grow their fan base. This is especially true in the smaller professional markets. You MUST eventually WIN on the field or it doesn’t matter what you do off-the-field, it won’t be enough. Just ask the Reds and Bengals.

P.S. – FC Cincinnati seems like it’s established a tremendous team. As of this writing, the club won its first home game at Nippart Stadium on Sunday, March 17 in front of more than 35,000 fans. They defeated the Portland Timbers by a score of 3-0. After 3 games, FC Cincinnati is 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie. n

Thankfully, the city of Dayton has a true Wright Brothers Memorial in the works. It will stand 270-feet, taller than the Statue of Liberty. At a projected cost of $22 million, money is still being raised. For a bit of Civil War history, travel to the Clermont County village of Williamsburg. John Hunt Morgan was a Confederate raider and his foray into Indiana and Ohio is legendary. Reaching Williamsburg, he and his men were exhausted after their non-stop ride from Sunman, Indiana. He went to the home of John Lytle, brother of William Lytle of Cincinnati’s Lytle Park fame. Morgan told Lytle to make sure that all Union soldiers had left the area and threatened to burn down the town if any remained or if anyone gave him or his men trouble. To emphasize his point, he took his sabre and etched the following on Lytle’s doorstep: John Morgan, July 14, 1863, 3000 men. That doorstop is preserved along with a commemorative plaque and is on display street-side, just off the sidewalk on Main Street and directly across from the old Williamsburg High School. Ohio has a love affair with museums. While the Air Force Museum at Wright- Patterson is world famous, some other museums across Ohio are... not so much. In Athens, you can visit the Hot Dog Museum. Just down the road in Marietta is the Mortuary Museum. I wonder what items they have for sale in the gift shop? On second thought, I don’t want to know. Logan is home to the Pencil Sharpener Museum, and Canal Winchester proudly boasts the National Barbershop Museum and Hall of Fame. As the old barber saying goes, you can only scalp a customer once, but you can give him a haircut every two weeks. Great credo. Finally, we arrive at the end of this brief sojourn across Ohio. But not before making one final stop, right here in Cincinnati. It is to visit the grave of Fredric Baur, inventor of Pringles potato chips. He was immensely proud of his creation, so much so that when he died, he was interred at Arlington Memorial Gardens… in a Pringles can. Ohio may not be the biggest state, but there’s a lot going on here. And we’re thirty- times bigger than Rhode Island. n

LET YOUR MIND WANDER FOR A moment and imagine yourself in a tropical rainforest. You’re walking along a lush path with tillandsia and showy orchids growing overhead and bromeliads blooming at your feet. A waterfall can be heard in the distance as you pass the large leaves of monstera, a familiar fiscus, cocoa and citrus trees, palms of all shapes and sizes and a plethora of exotic flowering plants. But the most stunning of all you realize upon rounding the bend, is a bold orchid towering over you at nearly 12 feet tall. The enlarged details take you by surprise and you turn to realize you’re standing among grand botanicals like you’ve never seen them before. An energetic six foot Venus flytrap grins in your direction, vivid four-foot pitcher plants wait with cupped leaves agape for their next meal, and oversized orchid blossoms pop with color around you. While this sounds like an experience from a science fiction novel, it can actually be found close to home this summer. Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden near Charlotte, North Carolina, will host an awe-inspiring, larger-than-life botanical glass exhibit, Grandiflora: Gamrath Glass at the Garden, opening Friday, May 24. Guests will be mesmerized by nearly 40 vibrant installations made up of hundreds of pieces of glass by Seattle-based artist Jason Gamrath including gigantic orchids, pitcher plants, Venus flytraps, columbine flowers, a corpse flower and more scattered throughout the Visitor Pavilion, tropical Orchid Conservatory and outdoor garden spaces. The immensity of Gamrath’s botanical works captivates audiences and calls attention to the beauty of normally tiny details within the natural world. “The most beautiful, extravagant man-made object could never creatively equal the simplest and smallest naturally occurring life form,” said Gamrath. “The purpose of creating this series on a macro scale is to bring to light the beauty that exists within the micro scale of nature. EVENTS / GRANDIFLORA: GAMRATH GLASS AT THE GARDEN across a room due to the overwhelming physical presence they command. It is my hope that when people admire my large- scale renderings, they become curious and captivated by the hints of realism I incorporate into my designs. I encourage people to attempt to observe with the same eyes through which I humbly and graciously experience our natural world.” A Seattle area native, Gamrath began studying glass sculpting at the young age of 15 and has worked and trained with many renowned artists including Preston Singletary, Karen Willenbrink, Richard Royal, Ross Richmond and Sally Prasch. He studied at the world’s most comprehensive center for glass art education, Pilchuck Glass School in Washington, which was founded by world- famous glass artist Dale Chihuly and patrons Anne Gould Hauberg and John H. Hauberg in addition to Seattle’s Pratt Fine Arts Center. According to Gamrath, “The experience of sculpting molten glass is as entrancing and intimate as the objects I choose to create with the glass. In order to capture the undeniable beauty of nature, I first must gain an understanding of how nature creates. When I began to make orchids, I initially used pictures for reference. Months passed, yet the work held little visual power. I found several live orchids, and over the next few months began to study how the plants grew. I paid close attention to the key steps of organic development. As I watched orchid buds unfurl, I was able to understand how the fully mature flower came to be. I incorporated these natural steps into my sculpting process. I started every piece as a bud and hastily mimicked months of growth one step at a time in the glass shop. Borrowing this natural process has allowed me to understand and grasp the simplistic and staggering beauty found in these plants. I can’t take sole credit for the beauty seen in my work, I can only credit myself for recognizing and painstakingly replicating key visual pieces of what has already existed for millions of years. My work is far from replication of the real thing. It relies heavily on what I as an observer choose to emphasize.” Grandiflora: Gamrath Glass at the Garden is the first of its kind at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, but follows cultural art exhibits such
