Charlie, the winner of the 2016 VE Vets Pet Idol competition, likes steak mince and eating at the dinner table like a human. But it hasn’t always been that way. The black-and-white glossy cat was rescued in February from around Lake Ngaroto by Heather Thompson. She says he was lying in the grass too weak to even sit up. “I took him home but we had trouble getting him to eat. He was just a skeleton.” Charlie weighed just 500g, was on a drip for four days, had numerous tests done and was force-fed. After one week at the vets, Charlie was brought home and fed steak mince. Before long he was eating meat five times a day and quickly started to gain weight. At almost 11 months old, he now weighs 5.3kg. Charlie topped the public voting from 21 other pets entered in the popular competition. The winning prize was a Panasonic Lumix Camera, sponsored by Strawbridges. The cutest pooch award went to Dominic McLiesh’s dog, Bonnie, who won a day-care and grooming package, sponsored by Dogs Galore. Runner-up awards went to Kleio, Jas- mine and Stephanie Rear’s cat, Trouble, and Keria Buckley’s dog, Minnie. They won baskets of pet goodies sponsored by VE Vets. Rural property update — lower dairy returns throwing up interesting alternatives

ecent statistics show that farm sales are about normal for this time of year. In September 11 RWaikato farms changed hands, while there were nine September farm sales in Waikato in each of the last three years. Nearly all these sales are grazing blocks and the properties are slightly larger than average size. With the sustained positivity of the beef sector, it is no surprise that pastoral farms are finding a ready market.
