  • Think of the Consequences
NHSCA EDITORIAL September 2014 Think of the consequences This July, a passenger aircraft was shot down such clinics are usually staffed by GPs with a over Ukraine by a ground–to–air missile which, Special Interest (GPSIs), many of whom do not it seems likely, was provided to one of the fulfil the supposedly mandatory experience armed groups in the area by a third party. This and training criteria for such posts. David Eedy appalling event raises many issues, including points out that the use of these ‘community’ the immorality of the arms trade and the results clinics has never been shown to reduce hospital of interference in a neighbouring country’s waiting lists, they threaten to destabilise the territory and politics, and beyond this there are hospital service and they cost a lot more than the issues of unforeseen consequences. Those hospital clinics. The service thus provided is operating this complex modern equipment not acting as a useful filter to reduce hospital almost certainly had no intention of annihilating referrals and causes only delay in reaching a true 298 innocent travellers, neither, presumably, specialist service. Further, we cannot ignore the did the providers think they might. It seems inevitable impact of this continued outsourcing likely that inadequate training, against a on education of students and trainees as the background of inexperience of such dangerous service is fragmented. At a recent public equipment, resulted in this disaster. Unforeseen, meeting a woman who had attended a local but not unforeseeable. private sector dermatology clinic told us that she could not fault the service - everyone was very Nearer to home, we are increasingly aware of professional and the surroundings pleasant - decisions about clinical services made by those except that they could not deal with her problem who know little about them, do not wish to look and she had to be referred on to the hospital.

  • Speech to the Oxford Media Convention - Harriet Harman CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
Speech to the Oxford Media Convention - Harriet Harman CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY Harriet Harman MP, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Shadow Culture, Media and Sport Secretary said today in a speech to the Oxford Media Convention: I'm very pleased to be here today - meeting up with those of you I haven't met before and with many of you who I have known for years - but in my new capacity as Shadow Culture Secretary. At the age of 61 it’s exciting to be part of Ed Miliband's new generation. Not so much the face book generation as the face lift generation. We meet in historic times: • Never before have the creative industries been so important to help take us through these difficult economic times • And never before has the media been under such scrutiny because of the phone hacking scandal • And all of this against the backdrop of astonishing developments in technology. One of the things that we are most proud of from our time in government is the support we gave to culture, the creative industries and sport. From free entry to museums and galleries, to boosting the film industry with tax credits, to winning the Olympics. Labour supported something that is hugely important to people's lives, something we are good at in this country and something that has a massive importance in the future. If our politics is to reflect the aspirations and concerns of young people, then culture, media and sport must be at its heart. In my constituency of Camberwell and Peckham - as everywhere else - it is impossible to overstate how central culture, media and sport is in the lives of young people.

For legal requirements we’re required to file an annual report for the financial year which runs from March-March, for the benefit of members we’ve included an update to September 2009 when this report was written. We are very pleased with the success and achievements of Compass during this past year, which has been the busiest and most proactive 12 months the organisation has ever been though in its 6 years of existence, the flurry of activity and output has been non-stop! Looking back 2008/2009 saw some clear milestone successes both politically and organisationally for Compass. Migrant Voters in the 2015 General Election 1. Introduction The 2015 general election looks to be the closest and least predictable in living memory, and immigration is a key issue at the heart of the contest. With concerns about the economy slowly receding as the financial crisis fades into memory, immigration has returned to the top of the political agenda, named by more voters as their most pressing political concern than any other issue1. Widespread anxiety about immigration has also been a key driver behind the surge in support for UKIP, though it is far from the only issue this new party is mobilizing around2. Much attention has been paid to the voters most anxious about immigration, and what can be done to assuage their concerns. Yet amidst this fierce debate about whether, and how, to restrict immigration, an important electoral voice has been largely overlooked: that of migrants themselves. In this briefing, we argue that the migrant The political benefits of engaging with electorate is a crucial constituency in the 2015 migrant voters could be felt far into the election, and will only grow in importance in future.

The group started a year ago and was designed to be a safe space for young people and a chance to chat to local Police and share concerns and ideas. The Police were working with schools. This was happening more now compared to the past but there was always room for improvement. There were 11 young women at the meeting and all felt that they didn’t mind the idea of stop and search and it could make people feel safer but it was important it was done “fairly and politely”. The young people reported that it could be a humiliating interaction and there should be more emphasis on respect and politeness.
