Chapter 6 The Lives of Sea Otter Hunters he men of the “new” Makushin Village, like practically all able-bodied Unanga{ men, were active sea otter hunters employed by the AC T Company. The reports that document the beginning of the long and irreversible decline of sea otter hunting tell us little about individuals. Among the names that do surface occasionally is that of Lazar Gordieff. He appears six times in the 1885-1889 AC Company copybook and in a few other documents. These fragmented records provide little more than shadows, but they are far more than we have for most Unanga{ of the late 19th century. Lazar was twenty-two in 1878 and living with his widowed father, two brothers and a sister at Chernofski.1 In a June 1885 letter from Rudolph Neumann, since 1880 the AC Company general agent at Unalaska, we learn that Lazar was given dried seal throats.2 From this it can be deduced that he crafted delicate models of kayaks. The throats of fur seals, removed, cleaned, and dried during the seal harvests in the Pribilof Islands, were the preferred material for covering the intricate wooden frames. This letter went to the agent on Wosnesenski Island, in the heart of the eastern sea otter grounds, where Gordieff was part of the summer hunting party. He may have spent time between hunts carving and assembling models. A few of these trade items, all anonymous, survive in museums and testify to intimate knowledge of the kayak and to a high degree of craftsmanship. The hunters were still away in August, but after they had returned to Unalaska in October and Neumann had gone over the records, which arrived on a subsequent ship, he discovered that Lazar owed the company $166 while another man owed $805. -

MICROCLIMATIC ASPECTS OF RETREAT SITE AND BASKING SITE SELECTION BY THE TASMANIAN TIGER SNAKE, Notechis ater sp. (Serpentes: Elapidae). PATRICK BRIAN WHITAKER Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours ----- Department of Geography and Environmental Studies University of Tasmania Hobart 1992 This thesis is dedicated to those who, in the future, may wish to use the information therein for the benefit of the snake. Abstract The thermal ecologies of two elevationally isolated populations of adult female Tasmanian Tiger Snakes (Notechis ater sp.) were investigated using stomach implanted radiotelemetry and a comprehensive microclimate monitoring programme. The study sites were Egg Islands, in the Huon Valley in southeastern Tasmania, and at Lake Crescent, on the lower Western Central Plateau of Tasmania. The study had four primary ~ims: (i) to determine the microclimatic conditions associated with retreat site and basking site selection; (ii) to record and compare behavioural thermoregulatory response to micrometeorological variation; (iii) to monitor diel rhythmicity and range of body temperatures; (iv) to determine voluntary thermal limits and eccritic body temperatures. This information was used in two ways: firstly, to identify the preferred physical microhabitat of this species; and secondly, to develop two predictive models of adult female Tiger Snake activity. The first is a relatively simple empirical model based on microclimatic correlates of body temperature; the second, a biophysical approach involving analysis of the snake's energy budget. Development of the first model required identification of those environmental parameters and quantities which: (i) trigger emergence; (ii) determine the amount of time necessary for the daily warm-up phase in differing micrometeorological conditions; (iii) allow the animal to move about within its home-range; and (iv) trigger entry into retreat sites. -

Prince George Land and Resource Management Plan 2.3.3 Resource Management Zones, Objectives and Strategies RMZ # 1 - Parsnip High Elevation RMZ Category: Special Resource Management - Natural Habitat Management Intent: Conservation of resource values including wildlife habitat, water quality and backcountry recreation. Resource development will include measures to conserve these priority values. Caribou habitat mapping should be referred to for additional detail. Description: Most of this RMZ is rugged mountainous terrain with alpine and sub-alpine ecosystems. The headwaters of the Parsnip River and many of its tributaries occur in the zone. The main criteria for delineating this RMZ was high suitability habitat for caribou and grizzly (both blue listed species). There is also important habitat for marten and wolverine. Water quality is important for downstream fish populations in RMZ's 2 and 3. There is suitable terrain for backcountry recreation. This RMZ has significant mineral values and the potential for identification of gas reserves is high. Area: 227,000 hectares RMZ # 2 - Parsnip Side Valleys RMZ Category: General Resource Management Management Intent: Integrated resource management of a wide array of resource values and permissible uses. Description: This RMZ includes the lower valleys of Parsnip River tributaries including Colbourne Creek, Reynolds Creek, Table River, Hominka River, Missinka River and upper Parsnip River. The boundary between RMZ 1 and 2 is based on habitat mapping for caribou and grizzly bear. There is important habitat for one red-listed fish species (arctic grayling) and one blue listed fish species (bull trout). Caribou travel corridors occur in the Hominka and Table River valleys. -

Box 3217, Smithers,BC VOJ2N0, Canada,email: [email protected] Abstract: The Alsek and Tatshenshinirivers of Yukon, British Columbia, and Alaska, and the Babine River, British Columbia, are seasonally importantfor grizzly bears(Ursus arctos) and Americanblack bears(Ursus americanus). Recreationaltravelers on these rivers use riparianhabitats for camping, which could lead to bear-humaninteraction and conflict. During visits in late summer 1998-99, we used 4 qualitativeindicators to assess risk of bear-humaninteraction at river campsites: (1) seasonal habitatpotential, (2) travel concerns, (3) sensory concerns, and (4) bear sign. We then rated each campsite on a 5-class scale, relative to other campsites, for the potential to displace bears and the potential for bear-human encounters. We used these ratingsto recommendhuman use of campsites with relatively low risk. ANTH 442/542 - Northwest Coast Archaeology COURSE DESCRIPTION This course examines the more than 12,000 year old archaeological record of the Northwest Coast of North America, the culture area extending from southeast Alaska to coastal British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and northern California. This region has fascinated anthropologists for almost 150 years because its indigenous peoples have developed distinctive cultures based on fishing, hunting, and gathering economies. We begin by establishing the ecological and ethnographic background for the region, and then study how these have shaped archaeologists' ideas about the past. We study the contents of sites and consider the relationship between data, interpretation, and theory. Throughout the term, we discuss the dynamics of contact and colonialism and how these have impacted understandings of the recent and more distant pasts of these societies. This course will prepare you to understand and evaluate Northwest Coast archaeological news within the context of different jurisdictions. You will also have the opportunity to visit some archaeological sites on the Oregon coast. I hope the course will prepare you for a lifetime of appreciating Northwest Coast archaeology.
