Bush on June 15, 2006, set aside the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) as the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument ( “PMNM” SPECIAL OCEAN USE or “Monument”), creating one of the world’s largest marine protected areas, managed to protect ecological and cultural integrity.
