Traffic Solution Pedestrian Safety-Here and There

Traffic, what traffic? This high flying commuter is traveling I spend 6 months a year living in my condo here on Fort Myers above all the car traffic and getting a great view at the same time along Beach. I spend the other 6 months living in my condo on Revere the Mangrove lined shoreline of the Critical Wildlife area. Beach in . Yes I am very blessed. But wait…………people are not being hit by cars and killed on Revere Ken Platt Beach Boulevard! I have been trying to figure out what makes crossing Estero Boulevard more dangerous than crossing Revere Beach Boulevard. The beaches are about the same size, there are homes and condos on both sides of the Boulevard as well as restaurants and bars. Well, I finally figured it out! On Revere Beach Boulevard the crosswalks have Pedestrian Crossing flashing yellow lights as well as white reflectors on the road that light up and blink at night. There are more crosswalks on Revere Beach Boulevard. There are also a few traffic lights in busy areas that allow the pedestrians to cross the street without getting killed. Do the drivers on the boulevard like stopping at these lights? No….but I think they would not like living with the knowl- edge that they hit and possible killed someone either. Oh I almost for- got, pedestrians that do not cross at crosswalks are fined. In my opinion the Traffic Department from the Town of Fort Myers Beach need to spend more time figuring out how to keep our pedestrians safe. It also seems to me the Town is spending more time these days thinking about expanding the area to be able to drink more “The Descending” alcohol on Fort Myers Beach than what’s really important. I have read many articles in this newspaper about COP and for the record I do not We caught wind of this information though Facebook and after think there should be more designated areas serving alcohol on Fort reading bit more about it, we wanted to send in this story idea. Councilman Raymond said there are a bunch of things about the ordinance that he doesn’t agree with. “Why are we using 100 feet and not 40 feet?” he asked. “I’m suggesting we not go past 40 feet. I do have a deal breaker on this - I can see it in the downtown zone only. I don’t want any new COP in the remaining six miles of the island.” Kosinski pointed out that the ordinance could always be changed in the future. “The fact that other coun- cils refused to deal with this shouldn’t matter, it’s here now,” he said. “Ordinances are living docu- ments - if this passes tonight, it’s not set in stone. Just in case you are having a rough day, here's a stress man- agement technique recommended in all the latest psychological jour- nals. The funny thing is that it really does work and will make you smile. 1. Picture yourself lying on your belly on a warm rock that hangs out over a crystal clear stream. 2. Picture yourself with both your hands dangling in the cool running water. 3. Birds are sweetly singing in the cool mountain air. 4. No one knows your secret place. 5. You are in total seclusion from that hectic place called the world. 6. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity. 7. The water is so clear that you can easily make out the face of the Democrat/or Republican you're holding underwater. George, do you believe in Yes, I do, because at my age I may “free love?” only get ‘lucky’ once. There!! See? It really does work. You're smiling already. In Memory: Gary Worman: 1947-2007. Long time beach resident & Rock Pack Member, Gary often supplied the Sand Paper with humor gathered while drinking in any pub that would have him. Gary is now drinking in a better place. Mermaids! DAMN THE TORNADOES DRIVER STANDINGS You would think that with all the damage tornadoes have done over the years that people in SPRINT CUP NATIONWIDE Kansas would be a bit reluctant to cheer for things that go around and around at a fast rate of speed. But that is not the case and in fact when it comes to Nascar it is just the opposite 1 Greg Biffle Elliott Sadler because the more racing they’ve seen at Kansas Speedway, the more they wanted. 2 Matt Kenseth -19 R.Stenhouse Jr. -4 Beginning with the first Cup race in 2001, this relativly new track has only hosted 12 Cup Dale Earnhardt Jr.-19 Austin Dillon* -20 races but the first 10 took place in the fall to great crowds. 3 So KS was awarded a second Cup date and the first spring race was held in early June 2011. 4 Martin Truex Jr. -20 Sam Hornish Jr. -54 In the weeks leading up to the race the surrounding regions were ravaged by twisters with 5 Kevin Harvick -24 Michael Annett -64 Joplin, Missouri (driver Jamie McMurray’s home town) sustaining some of the worst damage. Denny Hamlin -31 Cole Whitt* -65 But as they say in the entertainment business “the show must go on” and the first 6 spring race did, without a hitch and with the same outstanding attendance. 7 Tony Stewart -39 Trevor Bayne -67 In fact many teams got together and assisted in some of the recovery efforts that took place 8 Jimmie Johnson -40 Tayler Malsam -84 before and after the Nascar events endearing themselves to the fans even that much more. 9 Ryan Newman -48 Justin Allgaier -84 Nascar has moved the race to April in hopes of avoiding tornado time this year and hopefully Clint Bowyer -54 the only thing around Kansas moving in a circle real fast, is a stock car on the track, 10 Mike Bliss -100 not houses flying through the air like in the Wizard of Oz. 11 Carl Edwards -58 Danica Patrick -115 Brad Kesselowski took the checker flag at KS last spring crossing the finish line running on 12 Paul Menard -81 Joe Nemechek -115 fumes as did many other drivers in a race that was decided by fuel mileage strategy. Joey Logano -81 Mike Wallace -119 BKs Penky team needs a lot of improvement in that area if it's going to repeat because it has 13 been their down fall this year including last week’s race in Texas where he finished 36th. 14 Kyle Busch -89 Jeremy Clement120 The miniature #2 car displayed at The Big Game, where us local motor-heads watched the 15 Brad Keselowski -90 Jason Bowles* -128 race, saw more action than his fuel starved ride did on the track last Saturday night. Jeff Burton -94 Benny Gordon* -131 If teams expect to do well on these cookie-cutter tracks like Texas and Kansas 16 they really need to have a handle on the new EFI systems that these cars are running now 17 Jeff Gordon -96 Eric McClure -135 and the team PenskyDodges are really struggling. 18 Juan Montoya -99 Brian Scott -143 Once again this is where Roush racing excels and all 3 Roush drivers have finished in the AJ Allmendinger-101 Kenny Wallace -143 top ten the last 3 races at KS plus they have all won on this track too. 19 Points leader Greg Biffle won last weeks race in Texas. 20 Mark Martin -103 Blake Koch -148 The odds makers have Tony Stewart(4 to 1) and Jimmy Johnson(5 to 1)as the favorites to win this week again but apparently don't wanna get burned again by a Roush driver like they did last week, when Biff went off at 15 to 1. Kenseth and Edwards are 10 to 1 and the Biff is 8 to1 this week. But if your looking for a long shot this week, Mark Martin is 18 to 1 and Martin Truex Jr is 30 to 1. Both drivers finished in the top 6 last week and although a Toyota has yet to win a Cup race on this track, these Michale Waltrip Racing teams have been suprisingly hot. Another hot surprise this season has been the great turn outs for the race parties at the Big Game and especially last Saturday night. This is the first year we have really planned for Saturday Night race parties and it was so much fun that we are going to do it again. ps..the miniature #2 car at Next Saturday night we plan on throwing our first ever race party on Times Square, outside the Big Game is missing a NEXT CUP RACE under the stars at, La-Olas, to watch the sparks fly at Richmond. HOWBOUTIT! wheel and a reward is being *4/22* *12:30* FOX But this Sunday we're at the Big Game again to watch Dorothy sing the national anthem KANSAS before the Kansas race so come and get twisted!
