Dear Friends of St. Gerard’s,

This weekend is a particularly special one for me. Sunday marks my twelfth anniversary of ordination to the Priesthood and three years as Pastor of our community. I am grateful to God for calling me to a vocation that has been more fulfilling and joyful than I could have imagined. A few weeks ago, I was catching up with friends from high school and college. We hadn’t been all together in quite some time (like many people during the past year) so it was extra special. After we all shared what was new with our families, jobs and other areas, one of my friends made an interesting observation. He said that despite me not having a family of my own, he’s always struck by the diversity of life experiences I have on a regular basis. Indeed, he’s right! The variety of tasks and request made of a parish priest on a daily basis run the spectrum of human experience from joyful and heart-warming to tragic and heart-breaking. (There’s also a lot of mundane work like emails and budgets!)

When I was considering a vocation to the Priesthood, I attended many retreats and days of discernment. The Vocation Director at the time, Fr. Tom Coogan, said that the most frequent question he’s asked about Priesthood is: what is the best and worst part of being a priest? He replied that it’s the same answer for both: being invited into people’s lives. How right he was. As we celebrated Father’s Day last weekend, I was reminded of how many families have invited me into their lives through good and bad times alike. There’s a special bond between a priest and his people and I’m forever grateful for it.

Serving as Pastor of our parish has been a wonderful blessing. We’ve accomplished so much in our time together and there is still so much that lies ahead for our community. We likely think immediately of the building project and its great advancement over the past couple of years. Yet, as I’ve said many times before, the creation of new spaces for worship and our many other activities and ministries is only meaningful to the extent that we are working on our interior spiritual lives. As disciples, we’re meant to be growing everyday as followers of Jesus, clearing away the distractions and building on the Christian virtues. We are the temples of the Holy Spirit, to quote St. Paul, so our “ongoing construction” is a lifetime calling.

Thank you for your support these past three years. It’s hard to imagine that I am halfway through my term as Pastor! (And before you ask, I have no idea yet what will happen at the end of that term!) But I do know what I wish to accomplish in whatever time I have remaining here at St. Gerard’s. It’s not primarily about buildings, the campus, or even finances and programs. The most important work we’re meant to accomplish is growing in personal holiness each day. As your Pastor, I pledge to do all I can with my fellow clergy to aid you in that process. Thank you for inviting me into your lives. May we all reach the heights of holiness and come to share the unimaginable reward for those who persevere!

Sincerely yours,

June 27, 2021 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3 Religious Education

For the Year of St. Joseph: A Prayer to St. Joseph from Pope Leo XIII To you, O blessed Joseph, do we come to you in our tribulation, and having implored the help of your most holy Spouse (The Blessed Virgin Mary), we confidently invoke your patronage. Through that charity which bound you to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and through the paternal love with which you embraced the Christ Child, we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased by his Blood, and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities. O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us, and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy, and from all adversity; shield, too, each of us by your constant protection, so that, supported by your example and your aid, we may be able to live piously, to die in holiness, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven. Amen

Thank You For Supporting The Outreach Ministry At St. Gerard Majella Church Every day, people in our community are helped because of support from funds raised through the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

Today, consider a Dad like James. James saw information about the Catholic Ministries Appeal at his local parish, and he knew he had to turn to the Church for help since he had nowhere else to go. James had been gainfully employed for more than 10 years when he began to fall ill. Soon his medical issues made it impossible for him to keep working and he was forced to go out on disability.

After paying the co-pays on his medications, his family's rent and utilities bills, James had very little left to purchase food and other necessities for his family.

It was hard for him to ask for help, but with nowhere else to turn, he did. Catholic Charities found him a specialist who assessed the family's needs and directed them to appropriate resources in their community. He went to his Parish Outreach, where his family received food that allowed them to make it through the month. James and his family received the help they so desperately needed.

Today, James is back to work and the family is doing well. "I am so thankful that I know there is somewhere I can turn, where there are people that care, people I can talk to, if I am ever in such a situation again," shared James.

Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in the lives of others.  ------
