(Email me any updates and homebrews at: [email protected] ) (Come see the Forums! http://worldoffivenations.proboards.com/ ) Part 1: Disclaimer- I enjoyed watching the series of Naruto and reading the manga for a length of time, however actions in the manga have taken a complete path away from what little sense the story made to begin with since Shippuden and has gone entirely to serving fan-desires and not being a plausible story with a coherent setting. Call my efforts what you may, I know this is silly and I am aware this is no great work, but it’s something that I have wanted to try my hand at; recreating the world with a forced attempt to make an interesting and coherent setting. Along the way I found some amazing friends who shared my thoughts, and together we made something fun and great. The world created by the author was fascinating to me and seeing that being completely ignored and changed seemed like a waste of everything that could have been in the setting. History and Setting The shinobi world had its origins when the Five Great Nations relied on vast armies of samurai and archers for their military and protection. However, with the samurai came the greedy Shogun who used their military as their own personal armies rather than as national armies. Though the great nations balked against the Samurai’s audacity there was little that could be done. Eventually, however, groups of men and women who were trained in the ways of manipulating and controlling energy both within and without the body, as well as silent and deadly martial warfare, began to formulate together into large family groupings, called Clans. These Clans developed techniques through the manipulation of the energy called chakra, which resides in all living beings, and they kept the most advanced and secretive techniques only to themselves. Some of these techniques would alter the physiology of a being, others were simply different methods of employing ones chakra, and others still formed bonds with the creatures of nature. Regardless, these techniques would earn the name of Jutsu. Feudal lords began paying these shinobi clans to eliminate important members of the Shogunates, be they generals, loved ones, and even the Shogun themselves until with the threat of the shinobi the Great Nations were able to successfully disband the samurai and rob them of their power completely. The remaining samurai fled to the northernmost section of the continent which was unconquered and unclaimed by the Great Nations due to the bitter cold. Here they would found the Land of Iron and closed their borders to all shinobi and outsiders. The removal of the samurai left the Great Nations in a state of uncertainty. Their militaries were now removed, so to protect themselves and war with one another they began hiring the Clans with more frequency. Over a period of years certain Nations would hire certain Clans more frequently. Additionally, as a way to increase their own power and income, the Clans would war against one another, usually resulting in the weaker Clan being absorbed or, refusing their conquerors, suffering total annihilation. In rare cases however some members were able to escape and assimilate into allied Clans and hide within, their hidden Jutsu to remain a secret. Over time the repeated re-hiring of Clans resulted in Clans growing more and more dependent on the nations who paid their contracts. Clans began to swear their allegiance to a Great Nation in exchange for land, regular contracts, and a voice in the politics of the region. The Land of Fire accepted the Senjuu Clan, which was headed by two brothers, Hashirama and Tobirama Senjuu. They were both renowned in battle and known the world over as levelheaded and wise. Under their leadership the Senjuu clan had grown tremendously and grew to levels of extraordinary power. However the Senjuu possessed a rival clan, the Uchiha Clan. Their rivalry was fierce but when the Land of Fire accepted the Senjuu clan to what would later be called Konohagakure the Uchiha clan followed, weary of the constant battle. Not soon after the other Great Nations began doing the same and in less than five years after that point the Hidden Village system was established. At the head of each Hidden Village was a “Kage” a term reserved for the most powerful shinobi among them all. Konoha would select Hashirama Senjuu as the First Hokage, in honor of the Land of Fire, which they now called their homes. The Great Nations were now in a very strong position they all had armies of willing and well- practiced killers ready and zealous to fight for their new countrymen, and so not ten years after the Clan Wars ended the Great Nations began spreading words of peril among their Villages, words that other Nations were infringing on their borders with designs of war. But it was when the Tsuchikage, leader of Iwagakure, moved a large number of his shinobi over the southern border and attacked the Land of Wind that the other nations saw that the reported rumors were true and reacted on their fears and suspicions. All the Villages moved to attack their neighbors and the First Great Shinobi War had begun. Battle after battle raged across all borders and, driven by the Feudal Lord’s greedy desire for more land and political clout, the fight was not ended shortly or easily. It wasn’t until six years had passed, and both Senjuu brothers had fallen, that an armistice was finally signed by the feudal lords. An unsteady peace was forced on the Great Nations as their abilities to fight had, again, taken a downturn, the cycle of war and peace seemed to be an eternal one. Part 2: The Present Setting- Villages again share an unsteady peace. Two Shinobi Wars have come and gone since the ending of the First and now the Hidden Villages take a large part in National politics, using their various interactions to help keep hostilities low. With no war to fund contracts the shinobi spend much of their time doing private contracts for lesser nations and private interests who want their services. When a client wishes to hire a shinobi they pay a set fee based on the difficulty of the mission, assigned by a selected group of mid-level shinobi whose decision is then passed by the Kage for approval. Afterwards a high- ranking shinobi assigns the requisite number of shinobi required to complete the mission to his beliefs and village standards. Once the mission is complete the client pays the village and the participants receive a commission in addition to their monthly stipend. This system, the Client-Village system, has been in effect for over fifty years and shows no signs of stopping. Shinobi do jobs both large and small, be they overt or covert. However, as would be expect for specialist skills and knowledge, their services do not come cheap. Lastly, most shinobi will never willingly work against their own nation, so warriors, thugs, and samurai perform criminal activities, or the occasional Rogue shinobi, who are usually even more expensive than hiring from a Hidden Village, usually performs activities. The power system inside of a Hidden Village is very simple. There are three primary ranks that govern the majority of interactions within the Village. Within these ranks there are many smaller differences in authority that will be explored later. At the very bottom of the power structure are Academy Students who are not truly shinobi in their own right, but are under tutelage be it public or private to become shinobi in short order. The most minor and least important shinobi are the Genin, students who were not long-ago Academy students. They are assigned menial tasks under the supervision of their teachers. Most Genin are placed in three-man squads of Genin under a Chunin or Jonin. Chunin are next on the list and a public examination is required before the Feudal Lords from all countries decide upon which Genin advance to Chunin. A Chunin is considered an adult in the Hidden Village system and most Hidden Villages are filled with Chunin forming the bulk of their shinobi forces. At the very top of the ladder are the Jonin, Chunin who pass an extremely difficult test that qualifies them to command all other Shinobi save Jonin and the Kage. Obviously at the top is the Kage, which is not so much a rank as a title given to a Jonin who is decided upon by varying methods from village to village. Regardless of method, the Kage’s word is final to all except the Feudal Lord. Even outside their Hidden Village they claim a massive amount of respect and authority, able to order even noblemen and lesser lords around were they so willing. Between the Villages there exist many different ranks that fill the gap between these major ones, but the overall structure is the same.
