6/10/2014 Axl Rose Sues Activision Over 'Guitar Hero' | Billboard By Antony Bruno | November 23, 2010 12:00 AM EST Guns N’ Roses singer Axl Rose is suing Activision Blizzard for $20 million over the use of the band’s classic “Welcome to the Jungle,” in the 2007 videogame Guitar Hero III. According to the lawsuit (see the full filing here), Rose wanted assurances that there would be no connection to his former Guns N’ Roses bandmembers—particularly Slash —with the game or the song. It alleges that several Activision employees, including head of music Tim Riley and music supervisor Brandon Young, promised there would be no Slash avatars in the game or any music from Slash’s band at the time—Velvet Revolver—also in the game. Both wound up in the game. As stated in the complaint: Welcome to the Jungle’ is a highly-renowned rock song of immense popularity…[and] is regarded by fans and critics alike as one of the greatest hard rock songs of all time….Guitar Hero has generated well over a billion dollars in revenue for Activision….Activision understood the extraordinary value Guns N’ Roses and ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ could add to the Guitar Hero platform…[and] began spinning a web of lies and deception to conceal its true intentions. Most legal filings are mind-numbingly boring but this one’s a doozey. The really good stuff starts on page five where it clearly lays out Rose's attempts to disassociate the Guns N' Roses brand with past members and its full of all kinds of interesting anecdotes. Among other claims, it says Activision approached Rose to create a video game theme around the “Chinese Democracy” album. It also says that during a Valentine’s Day show at the Rose Bar in New York’s Gramercy Park Hotel this February, Activision’s Riley approached Rose to apologize for the situation: In tears, he apologized for the way in which Rose and Guns N’ Roses had been mistreated by Activision. He said “I can’t sleep at night” and asked Rose to forgive him. Most of you reading this have probably never heard of Buckethead, unless you’re into guitar-shredder extraordinaires and even then maybe not. Some of you may only be aware of Buckethead due to his brief brush with pop culture as a short lived guitar player for Axel Rose’s reconstituted Guns N Roses, though it was years before Chinese Democracy came out. I came to know of Buckethead after seeing him play second guitar with Primus at Ozzfest way back when in the 90’s. After seeing this strange, freakishly tall, bean pole with long hair wearing a porcelain white mask (devoid of expression) sporting a stylish KFC bucket as a hat… shred like an 80’s guitar god. I had to investigate further. After learning that Buckethead had CD’s available, I scoured all the local record stores (When there were Record Stores!) and was rewarded when I found two recently released discs at one of the stores. I would describe these albums as mostly instrumental, techno metal funk forays into prog rock, which I love, so I have been an avid fan ever since. Also since then I have come to realize that, to say Buckethead is prolific would be an understatement. Aside from releasing what seems to be several albums per year every year for nearly 20 years, Buckethead also plays on many other artists’ albums in addition to playing in side bands, such as Praxis, Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains and, coming soon to a chicken coop near you, Science Faxtion.

Current study discusses an approach of hard rock, in English, for high school students, from a multimodal perspective. The songs are analyzed in terms of their musicality and literariness and hard rock is considered a historically constituted complex cultural movement. The aesthetics of violence, present in the rock’n’roll scenario, specifically focused on the themes of drugs and alcohol abuse, is analyzed from the perspective of multiliteracies, for the development of teenagers’ critical education. The paper is theoretically based on theory by Lévy (2010), Kress (2000) and Kalantzis and Cope (2000) for multiliteracy concepts and on Walser (1993) for the criticism on the musical language.
