European Commission http://ec.europa.eu/transport The Mittelland Canal (MLK) is a major canal in central and provides the principal east-west inland waterway connection in the country. Innovation and Networks Executive The Action is a pre-identified project of the North Sea Baltic corridor, - Agency (INEA) Twentekanaal section, and is part of a Global project on the extension of the http://ec.europa.eu/inea MLK, supported by EU funding in the past.

Its aim is to improve the section between and Berlin in compliance with the criteria of Class Vb European Waterways. Its activities will be widening and increasing the depth of the canal bed from km 302.377 to km 303.800 in conjunction with an adjustment of bridge clearance heights.

The Action will guarantee a safer, economical and environmentally friendly goods transport link between the Berlin--Hanover route and the West German industrial centres, while improving hinterland connections to the most important North Sea ports.
