Causes for the accelerated rate of degradation of the lower Missouri River Bed, particularly in Kansas City are explored as well as potential countermeasures to arrest the incision. Main-stem rivers and their tributaries constitute a complex, interrelated system and consequently the Platte and Kansas Rivers are briefly discussed as well. Although the lower Missouri River Valley has been inhabited for over two hundred years, significant changes on the scale required to disrupt sediment transport patterns has only occurred within the last century or so. Major channelization efforts orchestrated by the federal government began around the turn of the nineteenth century. These operations coupled with a series of main-stem dams built between the 1930s and 1960s served to provide a navigation channel for commercial barge traffic as well as provide flood protection. It appears that clear water releases from upstream reservoirs and effects of the Platte River contribute little to nothing as far as degradation processes at Kansas City are iii concerned. Channelization works probably play a minor role, as well as land-use changes, such as deforestation and urbanization. Significant causes to the recent increase in degradation rate are major flood events and commercial dredging. The river often degrades several feet during a single flood event and although some recovery occurs, the river’s bed never reaches its previous elevation. Commercial dredging has significantly increased in the Missouri River in the same time frame that degradation has accelerated, occurring in the same areas as well. A few European rivers that also experience bed degradation were evaluated along with countermeasures applied to them. Unfortunately, the use of the European rivers lent itself to methods to arrest degradation that are unreasonable for use on the Missouri River. In light of the probable causes for degradation, the most effective countermeasure is likely a change in dredging regulations. Today, we tell about another important American river, the Missouri. It is the longest river in the United States. The first American Indians to live along the Missouri River called the river the Mine Sose. It means the muddy river. Even today, the Missouri is called "the Big Muddy" by many people. This is because it carries huge amounts of dirt from the land through which it flows. The dirt makes the river a brown color for much of its length. The Missouri begins in the Rocky Mountains of North America. It is formed by three rivers that come together in what is the north central state of Montana. The three rivers are the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers. They become the Missouri River in the southwestern part of Montana, more than one thousand two hundred meters above sea level. The river is clear and flows rapidly as it begins its travels east and south. It moves more slowly as it flows down to the waters of the Mississippi River, about ten kilometers north of the modern-day city of Saint Louis. The Missouri travels four-thousand kilometers from the high mountains in the north to the low lands of the south. It flows along the borders of seven states: Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and finally Missouri. The first Europeans who reported seeing the river were at the mouth of the Missouri where it empties into the Mississippi.

    War of 1812 by Beth Carvey The Sauk and Meskwaki and the War of 1812 Prelude to War The War of 1812 was a significant event in Sauk and Meskwaki history and also for many other native nations who resided along and near the Mississippi River. The War of 1812 was actually two wars: an international war fought between the United States and Great Britain in the east and an Indian war fought in the west. This article is the first of a four-part series which will explore the War of 1812 in terms of native peoples’ points of view, the military actions that occurred in the western frontier theater, and the consequences for the Sauk and Meskwaki that resulted from the American victory. In 1812 the western frontier was comprised of the Mississippi, Illinois, and Missouri River regions, encompassing parts of present-day Wisconsin, Illinois, and northwest Missouri. More than ten different native nations, including the Sauk and Meskwaki, lived on these lands with an estimated population of 25,000 people. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 the native people of the region had been growing increasingly unhappy with the United States. Four main reasons were at the heart of this unhappiness: arrogance and ignorance on the part of many American officials; illegal white settlement on native lands; a number of treaties that dispossessed tribes of their lands; and economic matters, specifically the fur trade. The Sauk and Meskwaki had poor relations with the United States government since the signing of the fraudulent Treaty of 1804, whereby the two nations ceded over 50 million acres of land to the United States.
