In 2011, PARACHUTES Had to Face the Ugly Truth and Realize That a Big Chapter for Them Was Inevitably Coming to an End In 2011, PARACHUTES had to face the ugly truth and realize that a big chapter for them was inevitably coming to an end. After ten years of touring all over Europe, after almost 400 shows that included supports for RISE AGAINST, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, BOYSETSFIRE, SILVERSTEIN, UNDEROATH or TAKING BACK SUNDAY, after three albums, several line-up changes and the leaving of principal songwriter and bassist Elmar Weyland, the Saarland, Germany-based quintet found that eventually it was time to decide who they were and what they wanted as a band. “We were absolutely running on empty and needed a break so bad, even if we didn’t want to admit it to ourselves“, remembers guitarist Carsten Jung. During the following hiatus, the band members not only caught up on a number of private and professional matters that had taken a back seat in the past, but also used the time off to give some serious thought to what was to become of the band’s future. PARACHUTES Titel: Blueprints “In a situation like that, you wonder whether you really want to keep doing this to yourself“, Jung confesses. In retrospect, the question seems an easy one to answer, Release-Date: 05.10.2012 though. Just like every PARACHUTES album before, “Blueprints“ was produced at SU2-Studios by Production: Phil Hillen (SU2 Studios) Phil Hillen, who this time also handled the mastering. As far as the sound of the record was concerned, everybody had a clear vision very early on: “We wanted it to be Mastering: Phil Hillen (SU2 Studios) completely real, no triggers on the drums, no digital amp modeling, no auto-tuned vocals, just a transparent, natural sounding record. Phil has been involved in this from Artwork: Jan Halberstadt beginning to end and there was simply no reason to have somebody else master the record for tons of extra money and without any clue of what our vision for this project was. We wanted somebody with a connection to the band beyond all the business evaluations. Die Band stammt aus Troy Michigan (USA) und im Juli kommt ihr viertes Album auf den Markt. Wieder eine Metalcore Band aus Amerika, bei der sich der ein oder andere die Frage stellt: "Braucht man das"? Klar, viel Neues hat auch diese Formation nicht, aber sie klingen frisch und verstehen es den Hörer zu fesseln. Ihr letztes Album "What We've Grown To Be", welches 2011 erschien, schaffte es auf Platz 20 der US-Billboard Charts. Das neue, selbst betitelte Album, wurde von David Benneth, der auch schon mit Bring Me The Horizon, Paramore und Of Mice And Men gearbeitet hat, aufgenommen und soll nun daran anknüpfen. Schon die ersten Töne des Openers, "Regenerate", sind eine positive Überraschung; da wird Grooviger Beat gepaart mit aggressivem und cleanen Gesängen geboten; womit der erste Kracher fertig ist und man denkt WOW; das war so nicht zu erwarten. Die Amis spielen Metalcore vom feinsten und hier und da erinnert mich das Ganze an Papa Roach meats Soilwork bzw. In Flames. Die zwei Sänger, David Stephens und Kyle Pavone, wechseln gekonnt zwischen Screams und cleanen Gesang. Beide verstehen es ihre Stimme so einzusetzen, dass es zum Song und zur Atmosphäre passt, egal ob gefühlvolle Passagen, wie bei "Memories", oder das aggressive Brüllen, wie bei "Regenerate", es passt einfach zu hundert Prozent.

    CARLETON UNIVERSITY FLUID BODIES: MASCULINITY IN EMO MUSIC A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC BY RYAN MACK OTTAWA, ONTARIO MAY 2014 ABSTRACT Emo is a genre of music that typically involves male performers, which evolved out of the punk and hardcore movements in Washington DC during the mid-80s. Scholarly literature on emo has explored its cultural and social contexts in relation to the “crisis” of masculinity—the challenging of the legitimacy of patriarchy through “alternative” forms of masculinity. This thesis builds upon this pioneering work but departs from its perpetuation of strict masculine binaries by conflating hegemonic and subordinate/alternative masculinities into a single subject position, which I call synergistic masculinity. In doing so, I use emo to explicate this vis-à-vis an intertextual analysis that explores the dominant themes in 1) lyrics; 2) the sites of vocal production (head, throat, chest) in conjunction with pitch and timbre; 3) the extensional and intensional intervallic relationships between notes and chords, and the use of dynamics in the musical syntax; 4) the use of public and private spaces, as well as the performative masculine body in music video. I posit that masculine emo performers dissolve these hierarchically organized masculinities, which allows for a deeper musical meaning and the extramusical signification of masculinity.     Jude the Obscure Official Biography Jude the Obscure, circa 2003 Jude the Obscure had a very comfortable place in the Ontario math-core/noisecore scene throughout its existence. I believe they were the first to be called “chaoticore”. Prior to the forming of this band, Grant Freifeld (“Fuzz” on bass), Jason Rice (“Jaundice” on drums) and Chuck Leach (“the Bank”/”Bankenstein” on guitar) played together in a slew of Grimsby, Ontario high school bands, often changing name every few months. When in 1998 they decided to go “heavier”, they asked a guy in their high school who was wearing a Snapcase shirt if he wanted to to be their signer; that was James Long (“Jimbo”). With Jimbo in, Jude the Obscure was born. The final addition was one of Jason’s coworker, Jordan Passfield who was brought in as an experimental guitar player. “A New Life of Painful Sin” demo, 1999 “A New Life of Painful Sin” demo, 1999 Their first show was a house show with Rise Over Run. In 1999 they recorded 3 songs at Scott Bialik’s small basement studio, soundDOME Studio, in Hamilton, live right off the floor. Jude self-released it as their first demo “A New Life of Painful Sin”. Everyone who ever talks about this demo doesn’t speak of it nicely. Nevertheless it is a good representation of what early 2000 metalcore was like. Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion.
