Kickstart//Out and About Interview k! ckstart FASHION IS HER SECOND NAME Sushma Singh is one of the most established designers in Nepal and has been an inspiration to many. She was the offi cial fashion designer for Hidden Treasure 2017, and was recently selected for the renowned pageant this year, too. TEXT BY AJITA SINGH

Tell us a little about yourself. It has been 15 years that I have been actively practicing fashion designing in Nepal under my brand name, Women’s Planet. I am very grateful to my clients, who have always shown love towards my work and been loyal to my brand. And, it is because of this that I have been encouraged to showcase my work at leading fashion shows in the country. I am a regular designer at TGIF Fashion Show and Mega Model. I was also recently invited to represent Nepal in the International Weaver Festival 2016 held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I have worked with Hidden Treasure as the official designer for Miss Nepal 2017, and will be doing for 2018, as well.

What inspired you to become a fashion designer? Seeking beauty is a trait that every woman has. In my early days, when I was exploring my purpose of being, I found that seeking beauty and making women feel beautiful was something I felt was engraved in me. The more I explored fashion, the more naturally it came to me. And, I got a lot of support and inspiration along the way.

How would you describe your personal style? I don’t restrict myself to one genre, as fashion has so many dimensions. I always consider the occasion, my comfort, and something that would match my personality.

How was your journey with the Miss Nepal pageant and the contestants? I enjoyed working with Miss Nepal, as it is one of the most reputed shows in the country. I am grateful to Hidden Treasure for entrusting me as the official designer. All the contestants were extremely nice, and I grew quite fond of them. We ended up becoming good friends.

Are you looking forward to working with the pageant and new contestants? Of course, I am really excited to be working with them, and will be putting my best effort and presenting my best designs for them this year.

What is your fashion advice for the coming season? It will be a surprise, as I am going to bring in new ideas this season.

Name one fashion obsession of yours. If I really had to choose one, I love to experiment with designing bridal wear, something that will make the bride happy and beautiful and make her look elegant on her special day. Celebs’ Bite Issue 321 5

TEXT BY EVANGELINE NEVE Have you tried White Rhino Wit? Launched in Nepal in the very fi rst days of 2018, it’s a new beer for the new year. White Rhino Wit is a Belgian-style wheat beer (Wit being the commonly used id for a Belgian wheat ale), a style that’s not as well-known yet in Nepal, where most of what’s available falls into the lager category. Th e taste of this new brew is light and almost fruity; I enjoyed it best well-chilled, and I think that as the weather gets warmer it will only get more popular.

Ashish P. Pradhan is one of the promoters at Evolution Beverages, the group that brought you Asahi from Japan and Singha from Th ailand—and now, this new kid on the block. It’s the fi rst craft beer from India to be launched in Nepal, and the beer scene in India seems to be really taking off , particularly in Bangalore and New Delhi, something that I hadn’t been aware of. White Rhino Brewing Co. products, however, are made in Madhya Pradesh, and also include a lager and IPA, in addition to the Wit—here’s hoping that IPA also makes its way to Nepal soon. With a retail price of Rs.350, White Rhino is an aff ordable option for those who want something a little diff erent out of their beer. Th e bottle tells me orange peel and coriander are amongst the ingredients, which I think account for the fresh, slightly fl oral feel it has. Ashish explains the need to pour a wheat beer properly; he believes drinking it from the bottle does the beer a disservice. “Pour 2/3 of the bottle into a glass,” he explains. “Th en, stop, swirl the rest of the beer around in the bottle quite vigorously, and pour it into the glass with the rest. Doing this really releases the fl avors and aromas and gives it the hazy appearance a wheat beer should have.” Well, that’s something I didn’t know before, either! White Rhino is available at a growing number of bars, restaurants, and supermarkets, and can also be ordered online from cheers.com.np. According to Ashish, the response has been really encouraging, which is good news for more and bigger plans for the future. In the wake of last month’s well-attended craft beer festival, it’s clear that there’s a growing thirst for a diversity of beers here in Nepal. It\s good news that White Rhino are doing their part to help the situation, and I think we can all agree that the outlook for craft beer in the country is certainly looking up!
