British Comedy, Global Resistance: Russell Brand, Charlie Brooker, and Stewart Lee (Forthcoming European Journal of International Relations) Dr James Brassett Introduction: Satirical Market Subjects? An interesting facet of the austerity period in mainstream British politics has been the rise (or return) to prominence of an apparently radical set of satirists.1 Comedians like Russell Brand, Charlie Brooker and Stewart Lee have consolidated already strong careers with a new tranche of material that meets a widespread public mood of disdain for the failure and excess of ‘global capitalism’. This can be seen through Brand’s use of tropes of revolution in his Messiah Complex and Paxman Interview, Brooker’s various subversions of the media-commodity nexus in Screenwipe, and Lee’s regular Guardian commentaries on the instrumentalisation of the arts and social critique. While radical comedy is by no means new, it has previously been associated with a punk/socialist fringe, whereas the current batch seems to occupy a place within the acceptable mainstream of British society: BBC programs, Guardian columns, sell out tours, etc. Perhaps a telling indication of the ascendancy of these ‘radical’ comedians has been the growing incidence of broadsheet articles and academic blogs designed to ‘clip their wings’. For example, Matt Flinders has argued that Russell Brand’s move to ‘serious politics’ is undermined by a general decline in the moral power of satire: 1 Numerous people have read and commented on this paper. Die britische Serie BLACK MIRROR stellt bezo- gen auf den Kern dieses Satzes ein korrespondierendes Anschauungsobjekt dar. BLACK MIRROR zeichnet sich als eine für das britische Fernsehen produzierte Serie aus.2 Jede der drei Episoden hinterfragt den Status Quo des gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Um- gangs mit Vertretern der Massenmedien und neuer Technologien, aber auch den Um- gang der Menschen mit eben diesen Gadgets. Als solches kann die Serie als ein medien- reflexives Anschauungsobjekt behandelt werden. BLACK MIRROR gehört einer Seriengruppierung an, »für die ebenfalls Merkmale gel- ten, wie Autoren-Prägung, [...] substanzielle Aussagen, kritisch-politische Schilderung historischer und gesellschaftlicher Zustände, realistischer Anmutung, innovative Machart etc.«3. PRODUCTION BRIEF “I am Loki, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.” —Loki arvel Studios’ “Loki,” an original live-action series created exclusively for Disney+, features the mercurial God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother’s shadow. The series, described as a crime-thriller meets epic-adventure, takes place after the events Mof “Avengers: Endgame.” “‘Loki’ is intriguingly different with a bold creative swing,” says Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios and Chief Creative Officer, Marvel. “This series breaks new ground for the Marvel Cinematic Universe before it, and lays the groundwork for things to come.” The starting point of the series is the moment in “Avengers: Endgame” when the 2012 Loki takes the Tesseract—from there Loki lands in the hands of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), which is outside of the timeline, concurrent to the current day Marvel Cinematic Universe. In his cross-timeline journey, Loki finds himself a fish out of water as he tries to navigate—and manipulate—his way through the bureaucratic nightmare that is the Time Variance Authority and its by-the-numbers mentality. This is Loki as you have never seen him. Stripped of his self- proclaimed majesty but with his ego still intact, Loki faces consequences he never thought could happen to such a supreme being as himself. In that, there is a lot of humor as he is taken down a few pegs and struggles to find his footing in the unforgiving bureaucracy of the Time Variance Authority. As the series progresses, we see different sides of Loki as he is drawn into helping to solve a serious crime with an agent 1 of the TVA, Mobius, who needs his “unique Loki perspective” to locate the culprits and mend the timeline.
