We cannot be more excited to see you on stage in your very favorite show! Here’s to many more moments. Love, Mom, Dad, & Ham We are so proud of our Young Cosette and how much you have grown this year! Madalyn, we love you very much! Momma, Daddy, and Rebekah Marleigh, The stage is your home! Your ability to showcase who you are as soon as you hit the stage is one of our favorite things about you. Congrats on your role as Young Eponine! We are so proud of you! Mommy, Daddy, & Baylor Heart For The Arts There is no doubt in my mind that our theatre, instead of being as the evangelical ministers used to believe the gateway to h—l, is as much of an act of worship as the theatre of the Greeks and has exactly the same meaning in our lives. The plays that please most…are representative of human loyalty, courage, love that purges the soul, grief that ennobles. -Ronald Reagan Dear FOA Family and Friends, My Uncle Dale, who I loved so dearly, used to tell me the only way to go to bed was tired. Every other way just leads to unhappiness. I understand that more and more every day. Working in theatre is so cool because you get to go to bed tired while still studying and sharing the best of all stories. This story, in particular, is the longest running and most popular in musical theatre for a reason; it’s sincerity lifts us and makes us want to be better people. While talent is a special thing, I believe that being willing and sincere is truly what you need to find success - everything else can be taught. And working with this cast and crew has sealed that in for me. This group is smart, humble, sincere, and willing to learn. They have stolen my heart while telling a story that stole my heart so many years ago. The struggle and redemption of Les Miserables may contain experiences that the young people who are telling the story are yet to fully understand, but my prayer for them is that this experience will serve them well as they build a life repertoire of love and crisis and tears and laughter. Every story that contains redemption is worth it, whether you’re working it out on the stage or living it yourself, and this one might be the king of all those that are worth it. So when they remember this experience, I hope they love it with all their heart, despite and because of all their hard work. Thank you, Uncle Dale, for teaching me about hard work. And Ronald Reagan, for your terrific observation about theatre. And cast and crew, for being willing and sincere. The stars came out both onstage and backstage for this project. God has been very good through you. With a Heart for the Arts, Kristi Our Performers Appreciate Your Best Theatre Etiquette Late arrivals must wait at the back of the house until a scene change. • PETER PAN Or the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up
PRESS RELEASE NORTH HIGH SCHOOL to present PETER PAN or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up The Appleton North High School Theatre Department will present the play PETER PAN or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up on May 16th through the 19th in the North High School Auditorium, 5000 North Ballard Road. This new version adapted from the original J.M. Barrie play and novel by Trevor Nunn and John Caird for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of London enjoyed phenomenal success when first produced. The famous team known for their productions of THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF NICHOLAS NICKLEBY and the musical LES MISERABLES have painstakingly researched and restored Barrie’s original play. “. .a national masterpiece.”—London Times. This is the beloved story of Peter, Wendy, Michael, John, Capt. Hook, Smee, the lost boys, pirates, and the Indians, and of course, Tinker Bell, in their adventures in Never Land. However, for the first time, the play is here restored to Barrie’s original intentions. In the words of adaptor, John Caird: “ We were fascinated to discover that there was no one single document called PETER PAN. What we found was a tantalizing number of different versions, all of them containing some very agreeable surprises….We have made some significant alterations, the greatest of which is the introduction of a new character, the Storyteller, who is in fact the author himself.” North’s theatre director, Ron Parker, states, “This is a very different PETER PAN than the one most people are familiar with. It is neither the popular musical version nor the Disney animated recreation, but goes back to Barrie’s original play and novel.

  • The Tony-Award-Winning Creators of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon
Report on the January-February 2017 University of Virginia Events around Les Misérables Organized by Professor Emeritus Marva Barnett Thanks to the generous grant from the Arts Endowment, supported by the Provost’s Office Course Enhancement Grant connected to my University Seminar, Les Misérables Today, the University of Virginia hosted several unique events, including the world’s first exhibit devoted to caricatures and cartoons about Victor Hugo’s epic novel and the second UVA artistic residency with the award-winning creators of the world’s longest-running musical—artists who have participated in no other artistic residencies. These events will live on through the internet, including the online presence of the Les Misérables Just for Laughs scholarly catalogue and the video of the February 23 conversation with Boublil and Schönberg. Les Misérables Just for Laughs / Les Misérables Pour Rire Exhibit in the Rotunda Upper West Oval Room, Jan. 21-Feb. 28 Before it was made into over fifty films and an award-winning musical, Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables was a rampant best seller when it appeared in 1862. The popular cartoonists who had caricatured Hugo for thirty years leapt at the chance to satirize his epic novel. With my assistance and that of Emily Umansky (CLAS/Batten ’17), French Hugo specialist Gérard Pouchain mounted the first-ever exhibit of original publications of Les Misérables caricatures— ranging from parodies to comic sketches of the author with his characters. On January 23, at 4:00 p.m. he gave his illustrated French presentation, “La caricature au service de la gloire, ou Victor Hugo raconté par le portrait-charge,” in the Rotunda Dome Room to approximately 25 UVA faculty and students, as well as Charlottesville community members associated with the Alliance Française.

FROM THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR MUSICAL THEAtre’s PresideNT Welcome to our 24th Annual Festival of New Musicals! The Festival is one of the highlights of the NAMT year, bringing together 600+ industry professionals for two days of intense focus on new musical theatre works and the remarkably talented writing teams who create them. This year we are particularly excited not only about the quality, but also about the diversity—in theme, style, period, place and people—represented across the eight shows that were selected from over 150 submissions. We’re visiting 17th-century England and early 20th century New York. We’re spending some time in the world of fairy tales—but not in ways you ever have before. We’re visiting Indiana and Georgia and the world of reality TV. Regardless of setting or stage of development, every one of these shows brings something new—something thought-provoking, funny, poignant or uplifting—to the musical theatre field. This Festival is about helping these shows and writers find their futures. Beyond the Festival, NAMT is active year-round in supporting members in their efforts to develop new works. This year’s Songwriters Showcase features excerpts from just a few of the many shows under development (many with collaboration across multiple members!) to salute the amazing, extraordinarily dedicated, innovative work our members do. A final and heartfelt thank you: our sponsors and donors make this Festival, and all of NAMT’s work, possible. We tremendously appreciate your support! Many thanks, too, to the Festival Committee, NAMT staff and all of you, our audience.

  • The South African Who Wrote the English Lyrics for 'Les Miserables' Talks to Marianne Gray in London HERBERT Kretzmer Has Ve
The South African who wrote the English lyrics for ‘Les Miserables’ talks to Marianne Gray in London HERBERT Kretzmer has very little to be miserable about. Apart from living a fascinating life, which started in Kroonstad then went via Paris and New York to London, he also wrote the English lyrics for Les Miserables, the world’s longest-running musical, which is now coming out as an all-star film. For the film, he has written the lyrics for an additional song, Suddenly, which has been nominated for an Oscar as Best Original Song. We meet in his elegant townhouse in Kensington, London, to talk about the film of the musical which is based on Victor Hugo’s novel set in 19th-century France. The musical has been running worldwide for 27 years, has been seen by 60 million people and shows no signs of flagging. The film stars two Australian leading men —Russell Crowe as the relentless Inspector Javert and Hugh Jackman as the hunted ex convict Jean Valjean — and the gorgeous Anne Hathaway as the hapless Fantine, mother of Cosette, who sells her hair to raise money. Hathaway actually had her beautiful long hair shorn to the scalp during one of the movie’s possibly most emotional sequences. Kretzmer only went on set twice during the shoot. He says he is now a “spare wheel”. “Nobody wants a writer round once his work is done,” he laughs. “He’s just being a tourist.” At 87, and with an OBE (Order of the British Empire), a chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and an honorary doctorate from Rhodes University (which he dropped out of when a student), he still is totally on the ball as he chats, in a soft South African accent, about his extraordinary life.
