Impostors by Scott Westerfeld 12 Sept 2019 ISBN 9781760528249 Paperback Recommended for Readers Aged 13+ Years / YA
Impostors By Scott Westerfeld 12 Sept 2019 ISBN 9781760528249 paperback Recommended for readers aged 13+ years / YA Summary Frey was raised to take a bullet. She's the body double for her twin sister Rafia—the precious heir of the first family of Shreve—and her existence is a closely guarded secret. So, while Rafi was schooled in poise and diplomacy, Frey was drilled in weapons and combat. Her purpose: to protect her sister from their tyrannical father's many enemies. When Frey is sent in Rafi's place as collateral in a precarious business deal, she becomes the perfect impostor—as elegant and charming as her sister. But Col Palafox, the son of a rival leader, is getting close enough to spot the killer inside her. As layers of deceit peel away, can Frey become her own person, and risk everything in a rebellion? Scott Westerfeld is a master of worldbuilding—the art of creating an imaginary world with its own complex political and social conventions, history, geography and technical innovations. In his Uglies series he created a future-world in which teenagers are forced to undergo extreme cosmetic surgery to conform to society’s standard of beauty—until one teen rises up and rebels. Readers loved it, making it one of the most successful YA series to be published in recent years. While Impostors expands the Uglies universe, it is a standalone read. Fresh and thrilling, it introduces terrific new characters, superb new tech and a scary new city. Use in the curriculum While not a pure allegory, Impostors is a post-apocalyptic dystopia—a genre that has become increasingly popular with young adult readers and writers in the 21st century. -

A Teacher's Guide to the Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld About
A Teacher’s Guide to The Leviathan Trilogy By Scott Westerfeld About the Trilogy It is the cusp of World War I. The Austro-Hungarians and Germans have their Clankers, steam- driven iron machines loaded with guns and ammunition. The British Darwinists employ genetically fabricated animals as their weaponry. Their Leviathan is a whale airship and the most masterful beast in the British fleet. In this striking, futuristic rendition of an alternate past where machines are pitted against genetically modified beasts, Aleksandar Ferdinand, a Clanker, and Deryn Sharp, a Darwinist, are on opposite sides in the war. But their paths cross in the most unexpected way, and together they embark on an around-the-world adventure, one that will change both their lives forever. In addition to the three novels, there is The Manual of Aeronautics, a lavishly illustrated, full- color companion. The Manual of Aeronautics is a guide to the inner workings of the Darwinist and Clanker powers. Loaded with detailed descriptions and elaborate illustrations of Darwinist beasties and Clanker walkers, weapons, transport, and uniforms, this manual highlights the international powers that Deryn and Alek encounter throughout their around-the-world adventures. This guide draws back the curtain and reveals the inner depths of Westerfeld’s fascinating alternative world. Book 1: Leviathan About the Novel Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. His own people have turned on him. His title is worthless. All he has is a battle-torn war machine and a loyal crew of men. Deryn Sharp is a commoner disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. -
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Tally Youngblood lives in a futuristic society that acculturates its citizens to believe that they are ugly until age 16 when they'll undergo an operation that will change them into pleasure-seeking "pretties." Anticipating this happy transformation, Tally meets Shay, another female ugly, who shares her enjoyment of hoverboarding and risky pranks. But Shay also disdains the false values and programmed conformity of the society and urges Tally to defect with her to the Smoke, a distant settlement of simple-living conscientious objectors. Why you'll like it: Futuristic. Dystopian. Conversational. About the Author: Scott Westerfeld is the author of 18 novels, most of which are for young adults and parts of series or sets involving the same characters. Besides the Uglies series, Scott is also well-known for the Leviathan trilogy, a steampunk retelling of World War I. Scott splits his time between New York City and Sydney, Australia. Questions for Discussion 1. Have you ever had a friend like Peris, who abandoned your friendship after they moved away? 2. At first, did you hope Tally would get the operation? When did you change your mind? (Or did you?) 3. Have you ever found yourself trusting someone more or paying more attention to what they said not because they deserved it, but just because of their looks? 4. In what ways did Tally’s trip through the wild prepare her for what she learned in the Smoke? 5. Would you give up your ability to think independently in exchange for being happy, beautiful, perpetually healthy, and rich? 6. -

World-Building As Narrative in Scott Westerfeld S Leviathan
Christopher Jones World-Building as Narrative in Scott Westerfelds Leviathan “To function as a rhetorical system in the richest sense of the term, steampunk must connect its surface system of style (its dirigibles, goggles, and clockwork aesthetic) to values, ideas, and beliefs. (Beard, xxiii) Introduction Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan trilogy (Leviathan, Behemoth, and Goliath) is an alterna- tive history of the First World War written for a Young Adult audience. It is an ex- ample of steampunk fiction, and as such makes numerous changes to historical fact. Chief among these is the division of much of the world along two axes, namely those nations who have chosen to pursue progress through mechanical engineeringknown in the novels as Clankersand those nations who continue to build on Charles Dar- win’s discovery of genetic engineering to create new creatures that are employed in industrial and military capacities. Examples of Clanker nations are Germany and Aus- tria, whilst Britainthanks to Darwin’s pioneering workis the leading Darwinist nation. Some powers want the best of both worlds, and so Japan as well as the USA show evidence of using both Clanker inventions and Darwinist creatures. For the most part, therefore, this division allows Westerfeld to map his re-imagined world onto the genuine antagonisms of the period surrounding the First World War. The narrative is based around the adventures of two young protagonists. His Serene Highness, Prince Aleksander of Hohenburg is the fictitious son of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and is also a representative of the Clanker approach to progress. His coun- terpart representing the Darwinists is Deryn Sharp, who for much of the trilogy is dis- guised as a boy called Dylan, since this was the only way open to her to gain admit- tance into the Air Service.
