April 2019

Shabbat Tazeria Friday, April 5 The Importance of Being Together 6:15 pm Family Shabbat Worship Saturday, April 6 We call Rosh Hashanah the celebration of the new year, yet it 10:30 am Morning Worship doesn’t occur until the 7th month on the Jewish calendar. This would be like Americans celebrating New Years Day in July! While Rosh Shabbat Metzora Hashanah marks the anniversary of the creation of the world, our Friday, April 12 rabbis decided that a different Jewish holiday was worthy of the start 8:00 pm Shabbat Worship of the Jewish calendar--. Saturday, April 13 The Hebrew month of Nisan is the first month on the Jewish calendar. It follows the 10:30 am Morning Worship and month of Adar (during which we celebrate Purim) and midway through the month we begin Torah Discussion Passover. While the High Holidays--Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur--provide the busiest and most Shabbat Pesach crowded days in the synagogue, Passover is the most widely observed Jewish holiday. Some Friday, April 19 surveys have indicated that upwards of 80% of Jews will observe Passover in one form or No Evening Services at CGoP another. First night seders at home The reason so many Jews continue to observe Passover even if they have no other Saturday, April 20 connection to the Jewish community is the same reason our ancestors determined that it 10:30 am Morning Worship should occur at the start of the Jewish calendar. The creation story marks the birth of humanity. The Passover story marks the birth of the Shabbat Achrei Mot Jewish people. Friday, April 26 Until the Hebrews were delivered from slavery in Egypt, we were merely an ethnic group. 10:30 am Last Morning of Passover God had contact with a select few of us, such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but we were with Yizkor not yet united as a religion. This all changed at Mt. Sinai. 8:00 pm Shabbat Worship From Sinai, God spoke to each and every one of us--and not just those present. The Saturday, April 27 Torah teaches that God made a covenant with all Jews past, present, and future. It was at this 10:30 am Morning Worship moment--when all Jews of the world were together--that God brought us into the covenant. The message was clear. Each new year should begin with a celebration of togetherness. Passover brings our entire families to the table. We are even commanded to open our doors to those who have nowhere to go. We eat together, we tell the story of our people, and we are reminded that even when we live during a time of great division, we Jews are eternally connected. I hope everyone has a seder to attend this year. If not, please let me know and I will make sure to find you one! Also, please consider attending Gates of Prayer’s second night seder. It gives us a chance to give thanks for starting the year with our congregational family!
