What an awful week of weather, almost continuous rain and gale force winds. I must congratulate all the many marshals who endured what must have been one of the worst spells of bad weather during any recent WRGB. While I was in a nice warm dry car doing the C System controlling (and of- ten also the A System when the link to HQ repeatedly failed) we were usually in the rain soaked clouds on the top of a mountain with the mast bent double due to the winds. The worst period was at Aberhirnant for the sec- ond run in the dark when the Forestry Commission were warning about falling trees and on completion of the stage all the marshals were lead out by the radio crews to ensure they got back to civilisation safely. Last to leave we gingerly drove down the mountain through numerous rivers and splashed our way back to Bewtys-y- Coed. Would we be back next year ? – off course we will, we’re mad.     THE MULTIPLE ESTATE: A FRAMEWORK FOR THE EVOLUTION OF SETTLEMENT IN ANGLO-SAXON AND SCANDINAVIAN CUMBRIA Angus J. L. Winchester In general, it is not until the later thirteenth century that surv1vmg documents enable us to reconstruct in any detail the pattern of rural settlement in the valleys and plains of Cumbria. By that time we find a populous landscape, the valleys of the Lake District supporting communi­ ties similar in size to those which they contained in the sixteenth century, the countryside peppered with corn mills and fulling mills using the power of the fast-flowing becks to process the produce of field and fell. To gain any idea of settlement in the area at an earlier date from documentary sources, we are thrown back on the dry, bare bones of the structure of landholding provided by a scatter of contemporary documents, including for southern Cumbria a few bald lines in the Domesday survey. This paper aims to put some flesh on the evidence of these early sources by comparing the patterns of lordship which they reveal in different parts of Cumbria and by drawing parallels with other parts of the country .1 Central to the argument pursued below is the concept of the multiple estate, a compact grouping of townships which geographers, historians and archaeologists are coming to see as an ancient, relatively stable framework within which settlement in northern England evolved during the centuries before the Norman Conquest. It was formed from three existing parishes, Embleton, Setmurthy and Wythop. It is bordered by the River Derwent in the North, the Cockermouth Town boundary to the West, Long Fell and Lord’s Seat to the South and Bassenthwaite Lake to the East. It has several small clusters of population around Dubwath, the Ruddings, Wythop Mill, Beckhouse, Routenbeck, Stanger and Shatton, as well as the larger ribbon of homes along the route of the old A66 through the Embleton Valley. There are single farmhouses and homes along the many minor roads in the parish. The total population as shown in the 2011 census was 442 people living in 193 households.

It does not, however, constitute a definitive statement as to the status of any particular highway. • This is not a comprehensive list of the entire highway network in Cumbria although the majority of streets are included for information purposes. • The extent of the highway maintainable at public expense is not available on the list and can only be determined through the search process. • The List of Streets is a live record and is constantly being amended and updated. We update and republish it every 3 months. • Like many rural authorities, where some highways have no name at all, we usually record our information using a road numbering reference system. Street descriptors will be added to the list during the updating process along with any other missing information. • The list does not contain Recorded Public Rights of Way as shown on Cumbria County Council’s 1976 Definitive Map, nor does it contain streets that are privately maintained. • The list is property of Cumbria County Council and is only available to the public for viewing purposes and must not be copied or distributed. His illness was reported in the May 2004 Newsletter but the news still comes as a shock. We all know about his work, over many years in Lorton, on local history, culminating in his book “A Cumberland Valley: A History of the Parish of Lorton”. What won’t be known is the success of his book - I have just heard that over 300 have now been sold - and they’re still selling - which is so good for a serious local history book about one valley in what was Cumberland. Ron’s success is one of the things about which his family, and we, can be justly proud. 2004 was quite a year for the Society with well-attended talks - each of the last three were getting close to the magic hundred figure - and the celebration of the bicentenary of the visit of the Wordsworths to the Lorton yew which included a successful poetry competition and the publication of a book covering both the history of the tree and the visit of the poet and the writing of the famous poem. The book is selling well and has received some good reviews. In 2003, we sold 72 Township maps, many more than we expected, but they are packed with information and look attractive.

    A CUMBERLAND VALLEY Ron George has travelled widely in Europe, South and North America and the Middle East. He was born in London, and after training as a telecommunications engineer he worked in South America for twenty five years before returning to England. After retirement he lived in Lorton for twenty one years where he helped his wife, Stella, to run the White Ash Barn Tea Shop, whilst simultaneously researching this local history and tracing his own family roots back to 16th Century Cornwall.
