50th Anniversary Celebrations

We recently celebrated ’s 50th Anniversary with our staff and students through a special whole school assembly. The whole day was a groovy trip back to the 60’s, our bells were changed to play popular songs of the era and many staff dressed up in psychedelic, colourful outfits along with some extraordinary hairstyles. To complete our historical journey we were joined by speical guests including retired staff, a former student, our Auxiliary and School Director. Photographs from the ‘olden days’ were shared and some former staff recollected their experiences at Woolooware High School.

The event was hosted by our School Captains who highlighted some significant events at the time of our school opening. Our Principal Ms Siokos also took us down memory lane and shared historical information from 1967 such as the first national polio immunisation campaign, the $5 note coming into circulation and the postcode system being introduced. Fast forward another 50 years and students were astounded to find they would be aged from 63 to 68 years and what schools may look like (tennis courts on the roof of a multi-story building perhaps). A full copy of Ms Siokos’s speech is included in this newsletter.

Our students gave an extraordinary band and vocal performance of two musical hits from 1968 ‘Hello/ Goodbye’ and ‘I’m a Believer’, the crowd joined in with much toe tapping, clapping and singing too. Our Junior Dance group performed a 1960’s style dance with some vibrant outfits to top it off. The Junior Hip Hop team then fast forwarded us to now and energized the crowd with an awesome hip hop routine.

A celebration cake was cut and ‘Happy Birthday’ was sung. Staff and guests enjoyed a morning tea. Students were treated to a sausage sizzle lunch and a modern day version of a Sunny Boy (an iceblock).

Thank-you to Russell McDougall and Deborah Luchi for coordinating the event. Please enjoy some photographs from the day. Strive For Excellence

Cheer Team

On Sunday, 26 September our Cheer Team competed at the AASCF NSW State Cheer Championships at the State Sports Centre Homebush. This was our first competition and the girls had been working very hard to learn and perfect their routine in preparation. They looked fabulous in their cheer uniforms and new team T-shirts. Thank you to Mrs D (Tiarna’s mum) for her help in organising the T-shirts.

After shaking out a few nerves backstage in warm up, the team looked confident on the competition floor and performed very well. They hit all their stunts, hit pyramid, and looked clean and sharp. For many of the girls, this performance was their first cheer competition, so the experience and guidance of our “old girls” was valuable.

At the award ceremony Woolooware won first place in Level 1! Two sports high schools that offer Cheer as a targeted sport came 2nd and 3rd in our division. This is an amazing achievement for our team that trains only during winter sport time and is a testament to the talent and commitment of the girls and their coach Phillip. Our next competition is Scholastic Nationals on October 14.

Congratulations Woolooware Waves!
