You should plan arriving Havana by mid-afternoon. It may take you some time to clear Cuban Immigration, get your bag and go through Customs. You will be met in the arrival hall, after clearing Customs, by our Cuban representative holding a ‘Cuba Explorer’ sign to take you to your hotel. They will have your name and will be monitoring your flight arrival in case there is a delay. Your first tour activity will be the welcome dinner and your guide will finalize details with you on arrival to your hotel. On departure from Cuba you will be asked to be at the airport 3 hours in advance. Havana’s International Airport arrival hall does have bathrooms. They may not have seats or tissue. This is normal in Cuba, so you may wish to bring packets of tissues. It is suggested to use the restroom on your flight before landing. On arrival at Havana’s José Martí International Airport proceed through Immigration. Your carry-on will once again be scanned. Give your ‘Health’ form to the nurses in white uniforms after you go through Immigration & screening. The important question they may ask is if you have been exposed to Ebola. Collect your bags and go through Customs giving them your blue customs form. You will be welcomed at the airport exterior lobby after you exit Cuban Customs. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Ashleigh Aiken 713.535.3224 [email protected] Images: http://bit.ly/2DhnOuR HOUSTON BALLET ANNOUNCES AN EXCITING PROMOTION DURING THE COMPANY’S HOMETOWN TOUR Chun Wai Chan was promoted to Principal dancer on December 23, 2017 HOUSTON, TEXAS [January 15, 2018] — Houston Ballet has announced that Artistic Director Stanton Welch AM has promoted Chun Wai Chan to Principal dancer. Formally a First Soloist, Chan was promoted on the evening of December 23, 2017 after starring in Stanton Welch’s The Nutcracker as the Nutcracker Prince. This well-deserved promotion concluded Houston Ballet’s performances at the Smart Financial Centre during the company’s Hometown Tour. “Dreams do come true,” said Chan. “I have wanted to be a Principal dancer for a long time, but never expected it to happen this soon. Everyone’s thoughts and words are the warmest gift for this Christmas.” Chan was born in Guang-Dong, China and received his professional dance training under Guang-Zhou Art School from 2004 to 2010. His honorary awards include 1st place in the 2006 CSTD International Ballet Competition in Australia, Finalist in the 2007 Beijing International Competition, 2nd place in the 2009 National Ballet Competition “Tao Li Cup” in China, Finalist in the 2010 Prix de Lausanne and received a full scholarship to study with Houston Ballet’s second company (HBII). While attending HBII in 2011, he was awarded the “Houston Ballet Academy Award.” Chan has performed all over the world and in many major cities throughout the United States. He has appeared in the Ninjinsky-Gala XLI in Hamburg, Germany, the 2015 Fall to Dance Festival in New York City Center, and was as a guest artist with Victoria Ballet in 2015 for the role of the Prince in The Nutcracker. -
Cuban National Ballet on Tour of Europe
Cuban National Ballet on tour of Europe The Cuban National Ballet Company –BNC-, directed by ballet legend, Alicia Alonso, began a three month tour of Spain, Italy and France set to wind up in July. The Cuban ballet ensemble will return to stages where audiences have enjoyed its performances before and dance on new theaters, such as Pleyel in Paris. BNC is touring Madrid, Andalucía, Barcelona and cities in the Basque Country, while in Italy, the famous Cuban company is scheduled to perform in Torino and Ravena. The Cuban versions of classics such as The Nutcracker, Giselle and Don Quixote are included on the renowned troupe’s presentations with which they have received both critics and audiences acclaim worldwide in previous tours. BNC and Alonso obtained the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris Award for its performance of Giselle at the Fourth International Dance Festival held at Les Champs Ellisée Theater in 1966. The company is also dancing the show The Magic of Dance that compiles excerpts of 19th century ballet hits, while in France a mixed bill of classical and contemporary pas de deux is included in its program. The main roles are performed by premier dancers Viengsay Valdés, Sadaise Arencibia, Anette Delgado, Grettel Morejón and Dani Hernández; first soloist Rafael Quenedit; soloists Patricio Revé Raúl Abreu and Ariel Martínez; principal Ginett Moncho and choriphee Claudia García, supported by its famous corps de ballet. In Paris the Cuban company will be joined by Cuban dancers Joel Carreño and Yolanda Correa, current stars with the Norwegian National Ballet; Cuba’s Osiel Gouneau, principal with the Munich Ballet in Germany, and Acosta Danza company dancer Luis Valle. -

American photographer Exhibits Photos of Cuban National Ballet The future stars of the Cuban National Ballet, students of the famed National Ballet School in Havana are the subjects of an exciting new exhibition by American photographer, Rebekah Bowman. Curated by Roberto Chile and Rebekah herself, the exhibition will open next Monday October 27 at Havana's José Martí Memorial in Revolution Square, as part of activities of the International Ballet Festival of Havana, running October 28 to November 7. The images in medium and large format reflect many aspects of the daily ritual of classes and rehearsals at the National Ballet School. Commenting on the photographic display, Miguel Cabrera, Historian of the National Ballet of Cuba, said: "This exhibition, which we gratefully welcome, besides constituting a valuable testimony, is a tribute to the rich heritage of the institution, showcasing the inexhaustible yeast that nurtures the future of Cuban ballet." The National Ballet School in Havana was originally founded in 1931, but grew into the prestigious institution it is now in the 1960s, after Fidel Castro came to power and declared that art and education were for the people. Talented children from all over the island could get free ballet training; the school is open to every child. Since the '60s, the Cuban ballet style has been chiefly formed by prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, now 93, and her husband Fernando Alonso. According to Bowman, along with its rigorous attention to classical form and technical precision, “the Cuban style has borrowed elements from the then-dominant European schools, influenced by aspects of Cuba’s Spanish and Afro-Cuban cultural heritage, and adapted them to the Cuban dancer’s physiology to express a Latin sensibility and aesthetic.” Many of Cuban ballet school graduates are dispersed all over the globe in prestigious companies such as the San Francisco Ballet, the Royal Ballet, and the American Ballet Theater. -

Latta, Ph.D. Abstract The focus of this ethnographic study is to examine the industry-wide culture of the American ballet. Two additional research questions guided the investigation: what attributes, and their light and dark dimensions, are valued among individuals selected for leadership roles within the culture, and how does the ballet industry nurture these attributes? An understanding of the culture was garnered through observations and interviews conducted in three classically-based professional ballet companies in the United States: one located in the Rocky Mountain region, one in the Midwestern region, and one in the Pacific Northwest region. Data analysis brought forth cultural and leadership themes revealing an industry consumed by “the ideal” to the point that members are willing to make sacrifices, both at the individual and organizational levels, for the pursuit of beauty. The ballet culture was found to expect its leaders to manifest the light dimensions of attributes valued by the culture, because these individuals are elevated to the extent that they “become the culture,” but they also allow these individuals to simultaneously exemplify the dark dimensions of these attributes. -

SMUIN PRESENTS “DANCE SERIES 01” IN CARMEL March 23 & 24, 2018 Program includes: Requiem for a Rose by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa Fly Me to the Moon by Michael Smuin Serenade for Strings by Garrett Ammon SAN FRANCISCO, CA (22 February 2018) — Smuin, after a successful run of its annual holiday extravaganza The Christmas Ballet, returns to Carmel with Dance Series 01. Continuing its 24th season, this program includes Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s critically lauded and transcendent piece Requiem for a Rose. Ochoa is an internationally acclaimed choreographer who creates contemporary dance works and also adapts her style for classical ballet companies. At its West Coast premiere with Smuin in fall 2017, San Francisco Classical Voice described the piece as “perfection!” Also on the program is Michael Smuin’s joyful tribute to Ol’ Blue Eyes, Fly Me to the Moon, hailed as “delicious” by the San Francisco Chronicle. This blend of ballet and popular dance is the embodiment of the smooth and stylish melodies that have inspired generations, including Sinatra’s renditions of “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “The Lady is a Tramp.” Rounding out the bill is the return of Garrett Ammon’s bold Serenade for Strings. Set to Tchaikovsky’s score of the same name, this work is a vibrant new interpretation of a piece inexorably tied to the iconic 1934 Balanchine ballet. Upon making its West Coast premiere with Smuin in October 2014, the San Francisco Chronicle noted that “the whole cast danced it vibrantly and flawlessly.” The Dance Series 01 program debuted in San Francisco last fall, with San Francisco Classical Voice describing the program as “terrific…in tune with the demand for ballets that aren’t the same old!” Dance Series 01 will be presented March 23-24 at the Sunset Center in Carmel. -

Cuban National Ballet: 65 Years on Stage Cubans are celebrating the 65th anniversary of one of the top five ballet companies, an ensemble that has gained international prestige and won awards and recognition in the world throughout the years. Alicia, Fernando and Alberto Alonso founded the Alicia Alonso Ballet with an opening show at Havana’s Auditorium Theater on October 28th, 1948. The company’s opening performance included a cast made up of dancers from the Cuban Pro-Arte Musical Society and dancers of the New York based American Ballet Theater. Fernando Alonso, his wife Alicia and his brother Alberto Alonso thus got involved in the historic event of setting up the Alicia Alonso Ballet, which will later be known as Cuban Ballet and currently as Cuban National Ballet Company. The Alicia Alonso Academy was created by Fernando and Alicia in 1950, planting the seed of what will later be considered one of the most outstanding results of Cuban Ballet: the Cuban Ballet School. At the academy which was aimed at training the first generations of professional Cuban ballet dancers, the Alonso’s conducted a serious research aimed at creating a unique teaching method that, with the passage of time, has led to what is known today as the internationally recognized and praised Cuban ballet school, whose style was discovered and singled out for the first time by renowned British dance critic and professor, Arnold Haskell, in the 1960’s. In the period between 1948 and 1956, Fernando Alonso knew how to face the apathy and misunderstandings of the Cuban governments which denied the most basic support for cultural efforts such as the Cuban ballet. -

Summer Ballet Workshop
Racheal Nye is a Principal of Kansas City Ballet School, where she oversees the Pre-Professional Division’s Daytime Program and is a Children’s Coach for company productions. She is a graduate of the Kirov Academy in Washington D.C., where she attended on full scholarship and studied with Nikolai Morozov, Alla Sizova, and Elena Vinogradova. She then joined Ballet Internationale in Indianap- Summer olis and continued training with Irina Kolpakova and Vladien Semenov. In 2000, Racheal joined Nevada Ballet Theatre and was promoted Ballet to principal in 2006. Racheal has danced leading roles in Giselle, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, and Cinderella, Balanchine’s Serenade Workshop and Who Cares? and has performed internationally including Lux- embourg, Korea, and Portugal. Her students have been awarded scholarships to international ballet schools as well as received recognition in both Regionals and Finals of the Youth America Grand Prix competition. She is Pilates and PBT certified. Ryan Nye Originally from central Maine, Ryan received his training from renowned Kirov Ballet Dancer, Andrei Bossov as well as The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School Pro- fessional Division. Upon graduating from Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Ryan attended the Banff Summer Arts Festival where he performed the principal role in Fernand Nault’s Carmina Burana. Ryan went on to dance for Festival Ballet of Providence, Eugene Ballet, and Ballet Idaho where he was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2011. In 2012, Ryan joined Kansas City Ballet where he danced many principal roles, including Jerome Robbins’ Fancy Free, Septime Webre’s ALICE (in wonderland), Michael Pink’s Dracula as well as Devon Carney’s Swan Lake, Giselle, and The Nutcracker.
