6 THE WANDERER ROUND 13 WARM UP
As the season ticks over into the second half, today’s fixture could carry big implications for both sides as the ladder begins to separate itself. The match marks the second occasion the two sides have met this season, following Round 6’s 1-1 draw at AAMI Park. In that match, a Ross McCormack penalty cancelled out Jaushua Sotirio’s opener in what was Josep Gombau’s first fixture in charge. Historically speaking it’s the Wanderers who hold an overwhelming advantage, grabbing nine wins to City’s four in the 16 league meetings between the pair. It’s also a fixture that tends to be high on goals, with an average of just over three being scored per game. Wanderers boss Gombau in particular will be keen to ensure City are on the receiving end of that statistic, as the Red & Black search for their first win at ANZ Stadium in the 2017/18 season.

8 THE WANDERER ROUND 13 FEATURE KEANU MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF
IT’S BEEN A BREAKOUT MONTH FOR THE CLUB’S YOUNGER BACCUS
For this was a 19-year-old who had yet to feature the entire Hyundai A-League season, was taking up a midfield role he had yet to play at senior level, and was coming up against a rampant Sydney FC outfit. And although the Sky Blues came out on top in that match, it was a night that Keanu Baccus announced to the country that he belongs at the Hyundai A-League level. Baccus was purposeful and positive, showing maturity well beyond his tender years in what was just his second start in professional football. here would’ve been more than a He would back that up the next week few eyebrows raised when three with a man-of-the-match performance in weeks ago, one Keanu Baccus against Central Coast Mariners in Round Twas named in the starting line up for 11, helping the Wanderers to a much- Sydney Derby XVII. needed 2-0 win.

Baccus finished the match with a team-high 99 touches, including 88 passes at an accuracy of 89.8% and played a key part in the Wanderers’ second goal. It was a display of intent from the number 42, who seems fully focused on making the most of the opportunities handed to him by new boss Josep Gombau. Baccus’ output over the last few matches may have taken some by surprise but not Gombau, who has long been an admirer of the youngster’s ability. Having coached Baccus as part of the Olyroos set-up, Gombau says he has plenty of belief in the Blacktown City junior. “He’s a player who has a lot of skill, he’s a player that I trust a lot,” says Gombau. “It’s risky because he’s very young but I say if you bring confidence to this kid he can do the job and I’m sure he can do a very good job with us. “He’s an important player for us.” Born in South Africa but bred in Western Sydney, Baccus joined the Red & Black’s Foxtel Y-League side in the 2014/15 season and quickly established himself as one of the side’s leading men. He would later rise to captain the side and was voted by his fellow peers at the Foxtel Youth League Player of the Year at Wanderers Medal 2017. His form for the youth team was rewarded when he made his Hyundai A-League debut last season in Round 13 at right-back against Perth Glory and he would go on to make two more appearances that season. Though the arrival of Gombau has signalled that Baccus can expect to see a lot more of the field this season. And for all the plaudits the Baccus might be receiving, he’s modest when describing his own personal performances of late. “I feel like I’m doing alright,” said Baccus. “We are all fighting for a spot I’ve got to keep going game-by-game and just help the team get a win if I can. “We keep playing good football and hopefully we keep winning.” Baccus’ form has not gone unnoticed as he was rewarded with a call-up to Ante Milicic’s Australian U23s squad for the 2018 AFC U23 Championship that will take place in China this month. It means Gombau will be unable to call on Baccus for most of January, though the tournament presents a big opportunity for the Wanderer to showcase to the world his undeniable talent.
