Densities and morphology of two co-existing lizard species (Lacerta agilis and Zootoca vivipara) in an extensivelly used farmland in Poland. Folia biol. (Kraków) 56: 165-171. The study was carried out in extensive farmland area near the town of Odolanów, Poland. During two breeding seasons (April-May, 2006-2007) lizards were counted on transect routes and captured by hand or by noosing. In total, 123 specimens of L. agilis and 153 specimens of Z. vivipara were captured. The proportion of males to females wasnt differed from the theoretical 1:1 ratio. Almost half of the individuals exhibited tail autotomy at least once in life. In the studied sand lizards significant sex specific differences were found between all morphological traits, i.e. males were shorter, lighter, but had a bigger head. In common lizards significant sex specific differences were detected only in body length, i.e. females were longer. All of the morphological traits were highly inter-correlated. The European common lizard, Zootoca vivipara, is one of the very few reptile species with two reproductive modes, viz. viviparity and oviparity. Oviparity in this otherwise viviparous form has been known since 1927 for the allopat- ric Z. v. louislantzi. Only with the discovery of a second oviparous form, Z. v. carniolica, a parapatric occurrence of ovipa- rous and viviparous populations became conceivable. In this study, we (1) detect a contact zone where both forms meet, (2) find evidence for natural hybridization between both reproductive strains, and (3) compare the reproductive strategies of egg-layers and live-bearers independent from environmental interference. Thirty-seven gravid females were captured in a supposed contact zone in Carinthia, Austria, and maintained in the laboratory until oviposition or parturition. Clutch size, embryonic mortality and birth weight of the neonates were compared among the reproductively differentiated samples. Hybrids were identified by intermediate reproductive characteristics. Our results provide the first proof of a contact zone between live-bearing and egg-laying Z. -

Threatened Species of the Northern Territory GREAT DESERT SKINK TJAKURA Egernia kintorei Conservation status Australia: Vulnerable Northern Territory: Vulnerable Photo: Steve McAlpin Description southern sections of the Great Sandy Desert of Western The great desert skink is a large, smooth bodied lizard with an average snout-vent length of 200 mm (maximum of 440 mm) and a body mass of up to 350 g. Males are heavier and have broader heads than females. The tail is slightly longer than the snout-vent length. The upperbody varies in colour between individuals and can be bright orange- brown or dull brown or light grey. The underbody colour ranges from bright lemon- yellow to cream or grey. Adult males often have blue-grey flanks, whereas those of females and juveniles are either plain brown or vertically barred with orange and cream. Known locations of great desert skink. Distribution The great desert skink is endemic to the Australia. Its former range included the Great Australian arid zone.
