OPERA COLUMBUS 5 FROM OPERA COLUMBUS

pera Columbus is changing at a rapid Opace, and the 2018-2020 season reflects the important direction in which we’re headed. We are humbly trying to make OC more accessible to everyone. Our new brand focus, “Make it Yours,” is meant to welcome our audience and patrons to come as themselves, rather than any preconceived notion of what an opera goer might be. We are addressing women leadership in the arts and diversity in our board and on our stage to better reflect this great city we are serving. We are passionately preserving the extraordinary of the classic repertoire, but we are equally passionate to advance opera into the sensibilities of our time.

Madama Butterfly is a masterpiece but can also be controversial. Traditionally, productions have portrayed Japanese characters to look Japanese, regardless of the color of their skin. This production, led by an all women artistic team, will feature the artists as themselves, allowing the talents of the performers and the costumes they wear to convey the characters they play. In partnership with Cardinal Health, we are thanking the many volunteers that served at the Urban League national conference this past August by inviting all 500 of them to the final dress rehearsal. Our February production is a world premiere and co-commission with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra called The Flood. This is an opera by woman composer Korine Fujiwara and librettist Stephen Wadsworth that tells a wonderful story of love and tragedy across four generations of a Columbus family. In the spring, Jazz Arts Group and OC will come together under the musical direction of Byron Stripling to fuse opera and jazz for a night of pure fun, Opera Meets Jazz. In partnership with CAPA, OC will present The Journey in the Lincoln Theatre, which will celebrate the music of African-American culture, spanning more than 200 years. This new production will feature Columbus artists, including the Thiossane West African Dance institute, local gospel choirs, and the Southside Boys and Girls Club. Enjoy this beautiful masterpiece and thank you for all the ways you support Opera Columbus!

6 OPERA COLUMBUS FROM OPERA COLUMBUS

t Opera Columbus, our goal is to breathe Anew life into the way opera is performed and presented, with original productions and fresh perspectives on this amazing art form. We mean it when we say “Make it yours,” with productions and programs that confront traditional expectations and preconceived notions of opera. The production you are about to see is a great example of this, and we are thrilled to open our 2018-2019 season with Madama Butterfly. Our incredible all-women creative team have taken a contemporary approach to Puccini’s beloved classic. All of the elements that make this one of the most popular of all operas – glorious music, engaging characters, and a heartbreaking tale of a woman abandoned by the man she loves – are here, retold through a modern, tradition-breaking interpretation. Whether this is your firstButterfly or your tenth (or more!), this will be an opera you will never forget. Opera Columbus’ 2018-2019 season continues in February with the world premiere of The Flood, co-commissioned by Opera Columbus and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. Composed by Korine Fujiwara with a libretto by Stephen Wadsworth, The Flood tells a story of human connection through loss and shared tragedy, centered around the devastation of Franklinton in the Great Flood of 1913.

In April, we will close the season with Opera Swings Jazz, in collaboration with Jazz Arts Group. This unique and exciting mash-up of opera and jazz will create one-of-a-kind music in a groundbreaking interpretation of favorite jazz standards. I hope that you will join us for all of the exceptional performances and events we have planned for this season. Please visit OperaColumbus.org for more information!

Thank you for joining us for Madama Butterfly. Enjoy the show!

OPERA COLUMBUS 11 DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Old and New Visions of Madama Butterfly

Giacomo Puccini’s iconic work Madama Butterfly has long been a staple of what people think of as “opera.” Most have heard of it, mostly due to the universal story of love lost in translation, female abandonment, and tragic consequences.

Butterfly was attractive from the time of its premiere in 1904 because of its exoticism to western audiences. At the time “Japonisme,” the act of dressing up and doing tasks that were “Japanese,” was a fad in Europe after Asian ports opened up for trade late in the 19th century: the culture was different and, therefore, exotic. Travel to Asia was much too grueling and expensive if one wanted to experience it for oneself, so pictures, literature, and textiles provided the dream.

Performing Butterfly in the 21st century is influenced by a globalized sensitivity to other cultures and beliefs. Travel is easy. The Internet gives us answers. Television transports us. The imagined Japanese setting as seen by Puccini (who never went there) is a device from 1904 about something that happened “over there.” It is a far cry from our reality. To dress up as if for a pageant and smear on eyeliner to make someone “appear” Asian should most definitely be a practice of the past, and yet some opera companies continue do it in the name of what audiences “want” from the work.

This production for Opera Columbus combines the world of 19th century Japan with contemporary couture, views of race/religion, and the effect of clothing/behavior. The costumes are meant to evoke the proper lines and silhouettes of kimono and uniforms through a unique visual interpretation, connecting ageless emotion with a contemporary audience. There was no attention paid to race or ethnicity when rounding up the best singers possible for this particular production.

There is every reason to continue to produce Madama Butterfly, but keeping it in its early 20th century box does not gives it proper reverence. We owe it our fullest and most careful attention so that it may continue to ring across changing times in all of its beauty and sadness.

SYNOPSIS

This is not your typical love story. Instead, it’s the story of love, betrayal, and sacrifice. Butterfly, a local Japanese girl, is head over heels for her fiancé John Pinkerton. But, as the love story goes, he has other plans in mind – namely to marry an American wife someday. After their wedding, Pinkerton leaves Japan with the promise to return to Butterfly one day.

Three years have passed with no word from Pinkerton. Butterfly has given birth to a son and has been eagerly awaiting his return. The American consul Sharpless comes to see Butterfly with a letter to her from Pinkerton, explaining that he’s coming back. Butterfly is so excited about the news that Sharpless doesn’t finish reading the letter – how rude.

As you probably guessed, Pinkerton did not come back for Butterfly, but instead shows up with his new wife, Kate, with the intention of Kate raising their child. Pinkerton chickens out of breaking the news to Butterfly himself, and asks his wife Kate and Suzuki, Butterfly’s maid, to tell her instead. Defeated by the news, she agrees to give up the child if Pinkerton comes to see her himself (and for him to find her dead body – more on that later). Butterfly grabs a knife but is interrupted by her child. Blindfolding him to not traumatize him (#alreadytraumatized), she stabs herself as Pinkerton calls out her name.
