Section 4 - the Philips Era 1964 to Pre-Motown 1971 THE FRANKIE VALLI AND THE FOUR SEASONS MASTERS/SESSIONS 1953 TO 1974 Section 4 - The Philips Era 1964 to Pre-Motown 1971 The following list is the Master Catalogue of known Four Seasons/Frankie Valli productions registered with Philips (USA) and pre their joining Motown in 1971. It is is understood that multi-track Masters from the approximate session dates (denoted as ‘c’ for ‘circa’) no longer exist and only mixed stereo masters survive.[and MONO mixes as yet unchecked – Sept 2018] This is not verified from existing Analogue Tapes but seems likely from limitations of CD re-issues. Many MONO versions are mix-downs from STEREO. Alternative Masters (ie remixes or specially compiled Stereo mixes) did occur up to 1970 with several appearing on (for example) Edizione D’Oro (Philips 2-6501). These have been noted where identified/preserved. Alternate (e.g speeded up 45 mixes) have not been separately identified except where they are specially unique re-mixes to the MONO LP version. The DOUBLE-HIT series have been excluded. This remains a ‘work in progress’. No notes have surfaced to confirm session dates and information is extracted from 45 labels, album notes, CD booklets and Philips printed records. The layout format is firstly the artist, session date(approximately- unless known) the studio and performers, arranger and producer.Additional credits to sound engineers and musicians are given as known. ’reg’ indicates probable master registration date. Additional re-mixes/re-masters are given below each first master. Albums denoted as ‘PHS-600’ also appeared as ‘PHM-200’ in MONO until 1968. The tabulated information lists in columns across the page. • The Jean Thomas Story—Part 3
The Jean Thomas Story—Part 3 Jean Thomas worked with many top producers during the 1960s but the one who cre- ated her best known work and who perhaps brought the best out of her vocal talent was Bob Crewe. Bob Crewe had a special talent himself and was a highly respected producer Jean’s good friend Ellie Greenwich had a good relation- ship with Bob Crewe and commented on his ability and on how they first met in an interview before her untimely passing in 2009….. "I'm not exactly sure when I met Bob Crewe, but we always saw each other around the business from the very beginning. (We) had an affinity for each other (and) still do! He was a joy to work with on all levels . he's a perfectionist, he's open to any outside ideas, he really knows what he wants and gets it, and most of all, he is passionate about what he does. He puts all of himself into eve- rything he touches . I always loved and still do love Bob! I can go on and on about this talented gentleman, and he is just that: A 'gentle man'." Mick Patrick and Malcolm Baumgart captured the best of Bob Crewe’s productions on “The DynoVoice Story….the label that had to happen” Westside CD226 and say of his unique- ness …..“Bob Crewe is not a man to be easily pigeon-holed. Possessed by an overriding creative urge from his earliest years, he has painted , worked as a photographic model, sculpted, acted, run an art gallery and dabbled in interior design alongside those talents for which he is justly renowned – ie singer, songwriter, producer, label owner, music publisher and manager.” The best of his productions of course include those of Jean Tho- mas.

  • Timepieces Four Seasons Stories from the Past
Timepieces Four Seasons Stories from the past ‘The Four Seasons & Motown - A One Way Street or Not? – By Kingsley Abbott and Ken Charmer & “Received wisdom has always had it that, with the growth and huge chart success of Motown records from 1963/4 onwards, The Four Seasons skillfully developed their sound around 1965 onwards to include a Motown-ish edge. There was no blatant copying or re-working of riffs like the guitar line from ‘My Girl’ or the bass line from ‘I Can't Help Myself’ that virtually every soul label indulged in, in bucket-loads. But instead there was a recognisable move towards utilisation of more danceable feels for the backing tracks. ‘Let's Hang On’, ‘Opus 17’ et al showed that Bob’s Crewe and Gaudio were well aware of the elements that made Motown sell so well, and this clever aiming towards such radio-friendly tracks proved a boon for us all and helped to sub- tly lift the group to a new level following the Vee Jay years and the early Philips period. It was a most effective gear change. Was the Motown to Seasons route a one way street? Motown had been formed and developed by Berry Gordy, who from the earliest days was a songwriter who had an intrinsic appreciation of the elements that built a hit song, and there is little doubt that he would have imbued other writers and producers around him with a similar outlook. If you listen to the first of the excellent ‘Complete Singles’ CD sets, you can easily pick up on many examples of Motown trying a wide variety of different hit styles.
