Whilst I was here we ran both and Bristol close, but now there is a real sense that we can make the next step. There has definitely been no drop off coming from a Premiership environment, and it has been the players driving the standards to make sure we are all ready for the games to get going again. During lockdown we would do some running to keep fit but it’s much better now that we can use the club and be confident that we’re all safe with regular testing. It’s just good to be back in the routine where my life feels normal day to day with rugby. It’s all about to change with our little arrival but we can’t wait, and that’s another reason why we’re so happy to be back here in London. It’s encouraging to see the Premiership back underway and hopefully that opens the door for us to get going soon. 13 ANGUS KERNOHAN The 21-year-old highly rated winger is a very exciting arrival from on a two-year deal. He has made 21 appearances for the Belfast-based side after graduating from their academy, including seven starts in the Pro 14 and two appearances in the Heineken Champions Cup. Kernohan joined the full-time ranks of the Academy in 2018 and then went on to become an almost constant feature in senior match-day squads, leading to a first team contract. His quality has also been recognised on the international front, and he was a significant part of the Ireland Under 20’s Six Nations Grand Slam winning team in 2019.

SIMON LINSELL

The highly-rated lock graduated from the Gloucester Academy, and has been one of the standout performers in the Greene King IPA Championship after spending a year captaining Hartpury. Linsell was at Kingsholm as a 17-year-old but then went to the University of Exeter to study, where he also captained their successful BUCS side. He made three appearances for the Gloucester first team, and came through the academy with the likes of and Ollie Thorley.

LUKE DANIELS The full-back spent the last two years with Bristol in the Gallagher Premiership, but will now have a second spell in West London. Daniels made his Premiership debut against Bath in a local derby victory, and went on to make eight league appearances for the Bears. The versatile back-three player was part of the Trailfinders side that gained promotion from National One as well as winning the British & Irish Cup during his 57 appearances for the Green and Whites. Daniels is primarily a full-back but can also feature on the wing with his pace and physicality proving too much for many Championship defenders in previous years, and he is an extremely reliable goal kicker.

ACADEMY 23 SIGNINGS #WelcometoEalingTrailfinders ZACH TOERIEN The former Grey High and Kingswood pupil arrives at the Trailfinders Academy with high expectations, having previously shone in South African schoolboy rugby and for Eastern Province’s age-grade sides. Toerien has experience in the second row, although it’s his versatility to play across the back row which should see him prosper in senior rugby. A dynamic ball-carrier and bringing plenty of work rate and energy, the Surrey-born loose forward will bring a lot to Trailfinders Academy and has already shown that he could be stepping up to training sessions with the senior squad sooner rather than later.

ASH CHIRIMA Having progressed through the London Irish U18 pathway and studied at St Paul’s Catholic College, the club’s AASE College, Chirima flashed his considerable potential at that level, though went uncontracted. London Irish’s loss has been Ealing Trailfinders’ gain, however, with the physically-gifted tighthead having made a strong first impression since arriving for preseason. The 18-year-old brings plenty of ability in the loose and the Trailfinders Academy coaches will seek to add to that by improving his conditioning and his scrummaging technique, two things which could turn Chirima into one of the most talented young props in the English game.

LEFTY ZIGIRIADIS On the other side of the scrum to Chirima, you have Zigiriadis. Boasting impressive conditioning and mobility in the loose, the South African loosehead ticks all the boxes required to be the modern day all-court front rower. Like Chirima, Zigiriadis will benefit from the bespoke scrum coaching that he will receive from Steve Neville. A product of Hilton College in South Africa, the prop has been ardently tested by the challenging schoolboy rugby scene in the country and he looks ready to make the leap to playing senior rugby on a regular basis in both the BUCS leagues and on a Saturday at the National League level.

Pre-pandemic, the demand on Ealing Foodbank was already growing at a very significant rate. In the year ending 21 March 2020 we fed 14,404 people, which was double the number of people in food crisis who we fed in the previous year. However the arrival of the virus, lockdown, school closures and furloughing of staff across London saw demand take a giant stride to levels we could not have imagined only 12 months ago. The graph shown below compares the monthly cumulative number of people we fed in 2019/20 and so far in 2020/21. Looking at the last four months (since April) we have fed 12,895 people this year, as opposed to 4,580 in the equivalent period last year – a staggering increase of 180% which is a near trebling of demand. It is hard to forecast the future demand on Ealing Foodbank, with uncertainty about the possibility and effects of a second wave of the virus, but conservatively we expect a total number of people fed of over 30,000 by 31 March 2021. This is based on the levels of growing unemployment we are seeing (low income is the largest factor causing families to use our Foodbank) and the observation from recent years that the Universal Credit system does not provide sufficient support for vulnerable people in food crisis – and indeed UC may be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of claimants in a fast falling recession.
