Information about the strains and stresses that a horse encounters while being ridden might be an important link between symptomatic description and functional diagnosis, and thus might improve prevention, treatment and management of back pain. Up to now, the biomechanics of the equine back under conditions usually present today, especially while being ridden, have not yet been sufficiently investigated. Saddles are rigid structures that transfer certain aids of the rider to the horse, and also transfer the motion of the horse back to the rider (Harmann, 1994). This transfer is presented by the pressure distribution under the saddle. Jeffcott et al. (1999) shows that the saddle mat equipment is an accurate and reliable device which produces repeatable objective results. According to Jeffcott et al. (1999) there is a need in further studies with clearly defined aims. The aim of this study is to compare the different loads, the external forces on the horses back (e.g. saddle pressure) by the rider, applied during three different gaits (walk, trot, gallop) and two different saddles (Side and English). Materials and Methods We measured 13 horses (age 7-25 years, 410-650 Kg, various breed, different training levels) without clinical signs of back pain. Their sex, age, breed or type, use and current training level are listened in Table 1. All horses were subjected to a clinical examination of the back. This examination included inspection when standing and walking, turning tight to the left and to the right, backing, palpation of the muscles of the back with assessment of muscle tone, palpation and percussion of the spinous processes as well as testing spinal movements (flexion, extension and lateroflexion of the thoracolumbar spine) (Licka et al. 1998). All horses were ridden with both types of saddles in three different gaits (walk, sitting trot, gallop) by their regular (usual) rider. For this investigation the regularly used saddles of each horse were taken. The horses had been ridden with these saddles for more than one year, and all horses showed no signs of back problems. The fit of the saddles was checked by an veterinarian and the saddler of the Spanish Riding school of Vienna. Measurements were carried out from the right side, with six cameras (sample rate 120 Hz, resolution 240 x 833 points) tracing one reflecting spherical marker placed on the horse’s right fore hoof. At least five recordings of each rider-gait- and saddle combination were taken with the ExpertVision System (Motion Analysis Corporation) with the horse moving on a 12 m long pressed sand track in an indoor riding arena. The pressure distribution under the saddle was recorded with the PLIANCE saddle mat (NOVEL GMBH, MUNICH). The saddle mat contains 224 sensors (sample rate of each sensor 30 Hz, measurement range 0.1 - 6 N/cm², dimension 169x105x45mm, weight 800g). The sensor mat was calibrated using homogeneous air pressure by calculating the calibration curves for each individual sensor. The measurements were triggered by the rider. A minimum of 12 motion-cycles of each trial were collected. In order to normalise the pressure distribution to the duration of one motion cycle we combined the saddle mat with kinematic measurements described above. From the pressure distribution we calculated the maximum overall force (MOF) in relation to the mass of rider and saddle and the Centre of Pressure (CoP) of the overall force. Results and Discussion The MOF in the english saddle is significant (p<0.05) higher than in the side saddle in all gaits. See table 1. The CoP varies significantly (p<0.05) more in the side saddle as in the english saddle in all gaits which is shown in Table 2. The rider’s weight is concentrated on a smaller area in the English saddle compared to the Side saddle. Therefore the aids given by the rider probably are more distinct and more efficient in the English saddle as in the Side saddle. The pressure on the back of the horse is reduced by the Side saddle (see fig. 1) because this saddle presumably tends to dampen the actual load more than the English saddle. The Side saddle contains double the stuffing of a regular English saddle, and therefore its stuffing deforms more easily than in English saddle. Therefore we think that the different pressure distribution of both saddle types might make it advantageous to alternate between them in training and rehabilitation of horses. In addition, it might give the chance to pronounce the variation during the training of horse and rider. Finding an interview was also a struggle. I made was able to contact the author of The Perfect Horse, Elizabeth Letts, but she was on tour for a new book she is writing. She was able to connect me with someone whose father had been on the mission. Maureen Quinlivian-Nolen was very helpful and agreed to answer my questions. We emailed a couple times before she emailed me her response to my questions. She was also able to provide a picture of her and a picture of her dad. After the majority of my research was done I realized I needed to finalize my decision on what form of presentation I would choose.

They are not new, just getting more well-known. They consist of a trail ride, usually averaging between two and three hours, with trail obstacles along the way. Bear in mind that the later you start your competition, the longer your ride can be due to possible waits at some obstacles. Obstacles are natural, or simulate naturally occurring conditions (including urban) for the horse and rider to negotiate. However, emphasis should be placed on having natural obstacles. There are usually 8-12 obstacles to test the rider's knowledge and the horse's capabilities. Trail trials are meant to be fun and enjoyable for everyone. As long as safety and common sense are kept in mind, everyone will have a good time. It is important to remember that the people doing the judging at sanctioned trail trials events are volunteers following this rule book and are doing the best they can. They are NOT paid professionals. It must be understood that these rules are guidelines subject to various interpretations by (sometimes) inexperienced judges. This rule book was started in 1987 by members of Corrals 12, 22, 35, 54 and 63 (the original Trail Trials Committee) with the thought of standardizing the rules for all contestants and to give guidelines for those wanting to put on a trail trial event.

ELIGIBILITY: 4-H club members must have passed their eighth (8) birthday but not have passed their nineteenth (19) birthday by January 1 of the current year. Exhibitors must be 4-H members in good standing enrolled in a project in the field in which they wish to make an entry, subject to the approval of their club key leader(s) and the club’s by-laws, and be under the supervision of Penn State Extension. FFA members choosing to participate in the livestock project must be enrolled in an Agricultural Education Course and be under the supervision of an Agricultural Teacher. FFA showman may show from 9th grade to 12th grade as long as they have not passed their nineteenth (19) birthday by January 1 of the current year. 2. The exhibitor is defined as the owner, or the name that appears on the registration certificate. All animals must be registered in a breed association and owned by the exhibitor by May 1 of the current year (except Dairy Cattle – June 1st). 3. Registration “papers pending” will be acceptable only in the case of junior calves. In such a situation, a document from the breed association verifying ownership and date of purchase must accompany the animal. 4. Exhibitors must have their registration certificates available for inspection at any time during the fair. This is especially important during the judging of the group classes as officials may wish to verify ownership at that time. 5. Exhibitors will be expected to display or parade their animals as directed by the superintendent, to accept the stall assigned without controversy, to keep their animals in attractive appearance and to cooperate with the department in every way that may serve to increase the educational value of the show.

The yards of the Prince Kar! of Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg ( 1845-1921) were leased by the Austrian­ Hungarian Agricultural Ministry and the horses were accommodated there after the troublesome joumey. After 1916 all military studs were dissolved by the govemment at that time and the military stud of Hostau was converted into a regular stud farm . Three stallions were assigned to Hostau: an Arab half-breed, an English half-breed and a Hanoverian. The main stud with 200 mares and three stallions was placed at the fannyard in Zwirschen. After the end of the war, the horses were transferred to Klattau, but as soon as normal conditions were gained again, the remaining horses returned back to Hostau. Some years later the leasehold became property of the Czechoslovakian state. After 1918 the majority of the fields were converted into pastures. The area of 1200 acreswas reduced to 250 acres for husbandry. The number of horses was 500 at this time. The stud fa rm increased. Some thoroughbred mares and thorougbbred and half-breed stalli ons were purchased abroad.

He also has extensive experience with the competitive side of dressage -- he is an international competitor in Doma Clasica (showing both Iberians and other breeds) and has qualified his Lusitano, Vinegra, for the Portuguese Olympic team. In addition, Miguel is EXPERT at in-hand training and uses the same methods as the Vienna school.
