Wagner College Seahawks Wagner College Seahawks Season Preview Nine of Wagner's 14 players on its roster are either sophomores or fresh- men. Also, Leeah Thomas is the only four-year senior on the squad, making the Green and White one of the youngest teams in the conference. Departed are all-NEC forward Carrie Walker, Vanessa Wyffels, the NEC's field-goal percentage leader, along with Ashley Linscott, the team's assist and steals leader. The trio combined for nearly 40 percent of Wagner's offense last season, which earned a record 18th berth into the NEC Tournament. Return- ing is the team's quiet leader and one of the best three-point shooters in the nation in Joy Gallagher. Gallagher, who played nearly every minute for sev- 2004-05 NEC Women's Basketball Guide enth-year head coach Tara Gallagher (no relation), drilled 99 three-pointers last season and her 3.5 threes per game led the nation. In the backcourt, sophomore Ashley Robinson, who started all 18 league games for the Seahawks a year ago, along with classmate Jesse Collins will have the duty of finding Gallagher open looks, along with putting the ball in the basket themselves. In the frontcourt, Thomas is the veteran of the group, logging roughly 19 min- utes per game last season, while shooting a solid 48.7 percent from the field. Wagner brings seven freshmen to Staten Island, including five guards and two six-foot forwards. The crew's quick maturation is paramount for the team's Ashley Robinson success. A8 SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2018 STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE SILIVE.COM A total of 721 degrees were awarded, including bachelor’s, master’s, post-master’s certificates and first doctorate degrees at Wagner College’s commencement ceremony yesterday. Jan Somma, Staten Island Advance photos GRYMES HILL Wagner College graduates 721 Allie Griffin [email protected] Wagner College President Dr. Richard Guarasci told graduates at the school’s 133rd commencement ceremony Friday that he personally believes their generation will be the one to fix the sometimes divisive times of today. “You are a new generation capable of heal- ing our social divides, building a fair and just social order and it’s imperative that you rise to this historical moment,” he said to gradu- ates and their families. He mentioned his 4-month-old grand- daughter, Zoey, who is multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and he said he often thinks about how she will experience the world. “What gives me hope that her life will be one marked by meaning and honor is what I’ve learned here at Wagner — that your gen- eration is a generation of transformational leadership to honor the pledge in creating a world of liberty and justice for all,” Guarasci said. This year’s commencement was the 100th graduation ceremony held on Wagner Col- lege’s Grymes Hill campus. The school was founded in Rochester, New York, and moved to its current address in 1918. A total of 721 degrees were awarded, including bachelor’s, master’s, post-master’s certificates and first doctorate degrees. Graduates and their families sat outdoors for the ceremony, under a tent on Sutter Oval and were lucky with the beautiful, sunny weather.
