Williams www.FilsingerGames.com www.CZWrestling.com ©2012 Filsinger Games What is Combat Zone Wrestling? CZW is the modern embodiment of hardcore wrestling. Founded in 1999, the organization is primarily based out of Philadelphia, the unofficial home of hardcore wrestling. While the promotion has its roots in ultraviolent matches that frequently include elements like barbed wire and glass, CZW also heavily features some of the top Junior Heavyweight talents in wrestling. The promotion runs monthly shows in the greater Philadelphia area, while also touring other parts of the US, Europe and Japan. CZW was founded by Hardcore Hall of Fame inductee John Zandig, and is currently owned by DJ Hyde, who has kept CZW true to its hardcore roots while continuing to showcase some of the best action the independent wrestling circuit has to offer. Combat Zone Wrestling Titles CZW World Heavyweight Championship – The top championship in CZW dates back to 1999, when Nick Gage won a 20-man Battle Royal to be named the first champion. The title is open to all wrestlers and can be contested under standard rules matches, but is frequently defended in ultraviolent rules matches. MASADA unified the Heavyweight Championship and the Ultraviolent Underground Championship in May 2012. CZW World Junior Heavyweight Championship – This championship is only open to wrestlers under the Junior Heavyweight limit of 220 lbs. The title dates back to CZW’s very first event in 1999. The title is usually defended in standard rules matches, but has also been contested in multi-man ladder matches. CZW World Tag Team Championship – The ultimate prize for tag teams in CZW dates back to the promotion’s first event in 1999. Although the title is meant for teams of two, there have been instances where the title has been held by an individual (Justice Pain) and a group (Team Ca$h). CZW Wired TV Championship – This championship was created in 2009 and designed to be defended on CZW Wired TV broadcasts. Combat Zone Wrestling Alumni Many other wrestlers featured in the LEGENDS OF WRESTLING Card Game have competed in CZW. Here is the list: • Amasis • Arik Cannon • Austin Aries • Blue Meanie • Briscoe Brothers • Brodie Lee • Bryan Danielson • Chris Hero • Chuck Taylor • Claudio Castagnoli • Dustin Lee • El Generico • Erick Stevens • Hallowicked • Icarus • Jerry Lynn • Jigsaw • Jimmy Jacobs • Johnny Gargano • Johnny Kashmere • Justin Credible • Kevin Steen • Larry Sweeney • Mike Quackenbush • Ophidian • Pinkie Sanchez • Rhett Titus • Roderick Strong • Sabu • Sandman • Shane Matthews • Sugar Dunkerton • Trent Acid • UltraMantis Black Other LOW wrestlers not mentioned here may have appeared in CZW or other feds’ shows associated with the CZW. We encourage promoters to add even more names to this list! Combat Zone Wrestling Special Events Tournament of Death – A Death Match tournament held annually since 2002 at an outdoor venue. The matches throughout the tournament use any and all kinds of weaponry including light tubes, panes of glass and barbed wire. Frequently fans will also be encouraged to bring weapons that are used in certain matches. The tournament structure changes year to year, but usually has three rounds and anywhere from 8 to 16 competitors. Best of the Best – The annual Junior Heavyweight Tournament that emphasizes athleticism over violence has been held since 2001. Typically the tournament features 12 competitors in three rounds, with four three-way matches in the first round, followed by singles matches in the semifinals and finals. Tangled Web – An annual event dating back to 2008, where the main event is contested in a match with two rings - one of which is covered by a barbed wire spider web. The rules for this ultraviolent match are included at the back of this handbook. Cage of Death – CZW’s longest running and biggest annual event. The main event features the Cage of Death match, which is a cage match featuring a variety of weapons and other ultraviolent objects. The actual cage for the event has taken many forms, including being suspended from the ceiling, having multiple cages stacked and even being electrified. The format of the match has also differed, with singles, multi- man, teams and Wargames style matches all employed. The rules for this ultraviolent match are included at the back of this handbook. MASADA Height: 6’1” Weight: 230 lbs. Waco, TX “The Ultraviolent Beast!” There have been a number of intense hardcore wrestlers who have competed in CZW over the years, but MASADA may be the most extreme one yet. MASADA has mastered the art of the Death Match, which he has honed through years of battles before even arriving in CZW. Since entering CZW, MASADA has proven himself on hardcore’s biggest stage over and over again. He is the only back-to-back Tournament of Death champion, winning Tournament of Death X and XI. He was the last ever Ultraviolent Underground Champion, a title that was merged with the CZW World Heavyweight title, when he won that award. As far as MASADA is concerned, his path of destruction in CZW has only just begun. And that path is sure to be littered with a number of bloody and battered opponents for years to come. Signature Moves: RAINING BLOOD – Wrist clutch fisherman driver MASADAMIZER – Death Valley Driver SKULLF*CKA BUSTER – Bridging leg hook belly-to-back suplex A.R. FOX Height: 6’ Weight: 185 lbs. Ansonia, CT “The People’s Choice!” AR Fox is one of the top Junior Heavyweights in the independents today. His high flying maneuvers and kamikaze style are second to none, but it’s also his foxlike cunning that keeps opponent guessing throughout the match that have helped him in his winning ways. AR Fox has recently begun his CZW career, but has made a splash in his short time. He made it to the finals of Best of the Best 11, losing to Sami Callihan in the finals. He did get the best of Callihan a short time later in beating him for the CZW Junior Heavyweight Championship. Fox also won the Wired TV Championship. AR Fox looks to continue in refining his abilities and continue to reach new heights in CZW and beyond. Signature Moves: Krunch – Death Valley Driver Lo Mein Pain – With the opponent sitting on the top rope, Fox delivers a running backflip slam 450 SPLASH – A 450 degree splash from the top rope SAMI CALLIHAN Height: 5’10” Weight: 205 lbs. An Anonymous Compound in Western Ohio “The Callihan Death Machine!” Sami Callahan may not the biggest dog in the fight, but damn well may be the scariest. While he may seem insane from the amount of punishment he takes, Callihan is an extremely accomplished wrestler throughout the independent circuit. But it’s CZW where he’s seen his biggest success. He debuted in 2008, and soon after won the Chri$ Ca$h Memorial Battle Royal. The next year, he had one of his signature moments winning the CZW Iron Man Championship and renaming it the New Horror Championship. Callihan has proven himself a formidable opponent for those in both the ultraviolent and Junior Heavyweight divisions. Sami is a former Ultraviolent Underground champion, and scored big in beating Danny Havoc in the Cage of Death XI main event. More recently, he has displayed his dominance in the Junior Heavyweight division, winning the CZW Junior Heavyweight championship twice, and beating AR Fox in the finals of the Best of the Best 11 tournament. Sami Callihan has had a storied career already, and the book is far from finished being written. Signature Moves: Forearm 2 Remember– Sami rocks the opponent with a running forearm while they’re in the corner STRETCH MUFFLER – Over-the-head modified Boston crab submission DRAKE YOUNGER Height: 5’9” Weight: 205 lbs. Indianapolis, IN by way of the R.A.A.G.E. Dojo “The Ultraviolent Goldenboy!” Drake Younger is a humble competitor who made his way to the top of CZW with a combination of passion, strong work ethic and guts. He is willing to do whatever it takes to win and stay at the top. Younger is a versatile fighter, excelling in both technical and ultraviolent matches. Drake made his debut in 2006 at Tournament of Death V, where he lost in the final, but broke through the next year winning Tournament of Death VI. Since then, he has won just about everything there is to win in CZW, and is the only Grand Slam championship winner in CZW History. He’s former Heavyweight Champion, Tag Team Champion, Ultraviolent Underground Champion, and World Jr. Heavyweight Champion. In fact, the Psycho Shooter’s CZW World Heavyweight championship title reign is the longest in history at 567 days. Drake Younger continues to do what it takes to win, in CZW and throughout the independent circuit. Expect to see his list of accomplishments continue to grow. Signature Moves: 50/50 Suplex – Half–nelson suplex Fire Thunder Driver – Sitout tombstone piledriver Drake ‘n’ Bake – Sitout Death Valley Driver (sometimes will preform the move into the corner) DRAKE’S LANDING – Vertebreaker ADAM COLE Height: 5’11” Weight: 201 lbs. Panama City, FL “Panama City Playboy!” One of the hottest young wrestlers on the independent circuit got his training at the CZW Pro Wrestling Academy as part of the 9th class and debuted in 2008.

The stark contrast between them is LA’BELL arrives like an MMA star with an entourage, dressed in quality sports brand, whereas FERNANDEZ arrives like a veteran wrestler. People they pass turn their heads recognizing them almost immediately as celebrities. A subtle jazz background music is played while they walk down the hallways and enter their respective locker room. - In Fernandez’s room he drops off his bag and sits down. Over his shoulder, the shot reveals him to be on his phone and navigating Twitter. - In Derrick’s room, his entourage drops his bag, one individual begins answering a phone. La’Bell quick changes his standard black shirt to a shirt with the RPS logo on. DERRICK LA’BELL: How’s it look? One of Derrick’s entourage looks up from his phone. Immediately he half-smiles and nods slowly and approvingly. BEN HUANG: Makes you like the G.O.A.T, Beast. JAMES STOKES: And that’s free, Beast. Another member of the entourage adds. • Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency Is Hard
Cubed Circle Newsletter 241 – Consistency is Hard As many of probably noticed, we have been posting late and sporadically for the last month. This was, obviously, not our intention, but with the second semester eating into my free time, staying up to date is a tall order. Even without the newsletter itself seeing weekly publication the site has still remained up to date on a weekly basis, thanks primarily to co-author Ben Carass, as well as guest writers Paul Cooke and Leslie Lee III. But, the newsletter has survived for well over 241 weeks, and will hopefully thrive in the years to come. I have attempted to make provisions for publishing related tasks which should minimize the risk of major delays (obviously there will be some regular delays, as this late issue can attest), but we have some fail safes in place in order to keep this to a minimum. With all of this said, we have a great issue for everyone this week with Paul Cooke discussing the Pro-Wrestling Only Greatest Wrestler Ever project and his personal experience with the poll, Ben covers the news including tons of results from Japan and the Lesnar USADA violation, the Mixed Bag returns with a look at comedy wrestling, Ricochet/Ospreay, and a potential WWE match of the year -- plus Ben also looks at last Sunday's Battleground show and the first RAW of the brand split (a very good show). Also, for those unaware, we now have an official Twitter account @CubedCircleWres allowing the banger to unprecedented highs at @BenCarass and @RyanClingman.

  • The Oral Poetics of Professional Wrestling, Or Laying the Smackdown on Homer
Oral Tradition, 29/1 (201X): 127-148 The Oral Poetics of Professional Wrestling, or Laying the Smackdown on Homer William Duffy Since its development in the first half of the twentieth century, Milman Parry and Albert Lord’s theory of “composition in performance” has been central to the study of oral poetry (J. M. Foley 1998:ix-x). This theory and others based on it have been used in the analysis of poetic traditions like those of the West African griots, the Viking skalds, and, most famously, the ancient Greek epics.1 However, scholars have rarely applied Parry-Lord theory to material other than oral poetry, with the notable exceptions of musical forms like jazz, African drumming, and freestyle rap.2 Parry and Lord themselves, on the other hand, referred to the works they catalogued as performances, making it possible to use their ideas beyond poetry and music. The usefulness of Parry-Lord theory in studies of different poetic traditions tempted me to view other genres of performance from this perspective. In this paper I offer up one such genre for analysis —professional wrestling—and show that interpreting the tropes of wrestling through the lens of composition in performance provides information that, in return, can help with analysis of materials more commonly addressed by this theory. Before beginning this effort, it will be useful to identify the qualities that a work must possess to be considered a “composition in performance,” in order to see if professional wrestling qualifies. The first, and probably most important and straightforward, criterion is that, as Lord (1960:13) says, “the moment of composition is the performance.” This disqualifies art forms like theater and ballet, works typically planned in advance and containing words and/or actions that must be performed at precise times and following a precise order.
