Hazel-kosmark vind ’n nuwe tuiste

The Castle Lager Rugby Championship will be restructured to include a 12-match format.

SA Rugby welcomed the announcement by SANZAAR union on Wednesday, confi rming a refreshed approach by the four partner unions to a restructured Castle Lager Rugby Championship – the fi rst part of a phased redevelopment within southern hemisphere rugby. The Castle Lager Rugby Championship – the fl agship of southern hemisphere rugby – will be restructured to include a 12-match format with teams playing each other on a home or away basis through the new mini- tour match schedule that was adopted in 2019. “We welcome the changes announced to the Castle Lager Rugby Championship with our SANZAAR partners and we are looking forward to see what the new strategic plan for the competition entails, with possible international expansion on the cards,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of SA Rugby. Roux said that although they had to change their domestic focus, they still have a long history with the All Blacks and Wallabies as well as a long-standing friendship with the Pumas and they look forward to more world class Test rugby. “Ever since the Tri-Nations was fi rst contested in 1996, and more recently the Castle Lager Rugby Championship from 2012, a team from the southern hemisphere has won the Rugby World Cup fi ve out of six times – which is testimony to the high quality of test rugby played on this side of the equator,” Roux remarked. Andy Marinos, CEO of SANZAAR, said the re-commitment by the four unions to the long-term future of the international game is an important start as they embark in a new direction for both the unions and the organisation over the coming years.

The 17-year-old found himself at odds with his swing after a sudden growth spurt early in the year. The subsequent cancellation of all the national and provincial tournaments bought the talented youngster the necessary time to work out all the kinks and when golf re- opened in June, Maas immediately headed to his home course – Pretoria Country Club – to fi ne-tune the improvements. He began campaigning on the country’s golf development circuits in September to put the new swing under competitive pressure and the results have been outstanding. Since late September, Maas racked up four titles in as many weeks – two victories against the professionals on the IGT Challenge Tour, a play-off triumph on the Bulls one win away from the much wanted silverware new Bushveld Tour and a win on the popular Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series, which Duane Vermeulen and his Bulls team had to dig deep to beat the Lions by 30-25 in a tough Jukskei derby in Johannesburg on Saturday. qualifi ed him for the regional fi nals. He came within three shots of the 72-hole record set by Albert Kruger in the Ekurhuleni Open at ERPM in 2002. He did, however, equal the next best score, set by fellow GolfRSA National Squad member and SA No 1 Casey Jarvis in the 2018 edition of the Ekurhuleni Open at State Mines. “It was quite funny in the end, because Casey told me the record was his 27-under at State Mines. Neither of us knew about the 30-under record, so I guess we both have something to shoot for now. I had set myself a target of 30-under and was going nicely in the fi nal round until the wind started blowing quite strong. I dropped a shot on the seventh, but I birdied the eighth and then we got called off for dangerous weather,” Maas said after the tournament. The fi eld had to wait out the storm and the hour and 20-minute delay left Maas feeling stiff . “I made a string of pars on the back nine, but it was really nice to fi nish it off with three birdies in a row.”
