It is gratifying to know that the creators of the Born Learning Trail recognized that painted shapes, numbers on a hopscotch game and alphabet circles could create such a learning-rich and engaging environment. Ten signs are also posted to give caregivers helpful tips on how to encourage their children to get the most out of their use of the Born Learning Trail experience. Sing, ask, listen, observe, laugh, pretend, compare, clap, skip and describe are just some of the words used on the signs to make the use of the trail more meaningful. We are so thankful to the United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council Women of Worth and the Early Learning Coalition for selecting three of our library locations — Headquarters-Ocala, Belleview and Forest — to be the recipients of these Born Learning Trails.

arion County Parks and Recreation Department Landscape Architect Jim Couillard has designed and seen to Mfruition several projects during his eight years with the county. The Marion County Public Library System is one of the beneficiaries of his expertise. One notable project is a 570 foot long public access boardwalk that leads from the Forest Public Library to the Forest Corners Community Center and was completed in September, 2011. The walkway, which spans a wetland area, is handicap- accessible and features a sidewalk that connects it to the library. Signage on the boardwalk describes the various types of flora and fauna in the wetland area. Jim also helped design garden areas for both the Belleview and Dunnellon branch libraries and did a landscape restoration plan for the Forest Public Library branch as well. The Belleview Public Library project was the result of a collaboration between the library and the local branch of the Florida Native Plant Society. According to Lee Schwartz, Belleview Public Library supervisor, the native plants installed at the Belleview library branch are thriving, and he gives much of the credit to Jim. “Without Jim, it would never have happened,” Schwartz said.
