This paper presents the first detailed study of a large assemblage of late Pleistocene artefacts from the central desert. Analysis of the lithics shows show that Puritjarra rock shelter was used more intensively over time, with significant shifts in the character of occupation at 18,000, 7,500 and 800 B.P., reflecting significant re-organization of activities across the landscape. The same generalized flake and core technology appears to have been used for over 30 millennia with only limited change in artefact typology over this period. SMITH, M.A., 2006. IV (Aug 2015), PP 109-115 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Socio-Economic Determinants of Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Gilgil Town of Nakuru County, Kenya Kamau John Gathii1, and Mathew Mwangi Ngura2, Abstract: This study sought to establish the socio-economic determiners of performance of SMEs in Gilgil town of Nakuru County, Kenya. It adopted a survey research design involving SMEs in Gilgil town. Questionnaires were used as research instruments to gather information on variables of interest. The target population of the study included the 400 SMEs in Gilgil town registered with the County Council of Nakuru in the year 2012 and thereafter a sample size of 196 (49%) SMEs owners were systematically selected as respondents for the study. Data collected was coded and analyzed with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer programme. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages and frequencies while the qualitative data derived from open-ended questions was analyzed according to themes based on the study objectives and research questions and there after inferences and conclusions were drawn. The study revealed that very few SMEs owners had obtained management training; most of them had only obtained secondary education; SMEs lacked access to financial resources and very few had integrated technology in their business operation. These shortcomings have adversely affected the performance of the SMEs in Gilgil town going by the low profits that they are making. -

TRYON Abstract The Aurignacian technocomplex in Eurasia, dated to ~43-28 ka, has no direct archeological taxonomic equivalent in Africa during the same time interval, which may reflect differences in inter-group communication or differences in archeological definitions currently in use. Extinct hominin taxa are present in both Eurasia and Africa during this interval, but the African archeological record has played little role in discussions of the demographic expansion of Homo sapiens, unlike the Aurignacian. Sites in Eurasia and Africa by 42 ka show the earliest examples of personal ornaments that result from extensive modification of raw materials, a greater investment of time that may reflect increased their use in increasingly diverse and complex social networks. -

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has listed the tilapia Alcolapia grahami as a prohibited species. Prohibited nonnative species (FFWCC 2018), “are considered to be dangerous to the ecology and/or the health and welfare of the people of Florida. These species are not allowed to be personally possessed or used for commercial activities.” Means of Introductions in the United States No records of Alcolapia grahami in the United States were found. 1 Remarks From Bayona and Akinyi (2006): “Vulnerable D2 ver 3.1” Various sources use Alcolapia grahami (Eschmeyer et al. 2017) or Oreochromis grahami (ITIS 2017) as the accepted name for this species. Eighty-nine of these belonging to some 41 genera were recorded from Kenya. The new list contains some 106 forms of 46 genera. - Three full species have been deleted from Loveridge's original checklist. Typhlops b. blanfordii has been synonymised with Typhlops I. lineolatus, Typhlops kaimosae has been synonymised with Typhlops angolensis (Roux-Esteve 1974) and Co/uber citeroii has been synonymised with Meizodon semiornatus (Lanza 1963). Of the 20 forms added to the list, 12 are forms collected for the first time in Kenya but occurring outside its political boundaries and one, Atheris desaixi is a new species, the holotype and paratypes being collected within Kenya. There has also been a large number of changes amongst the 89 original species as a result of revisionary systematic studies. This accounts for the other additions to the list. INTRODUCTION The most recent checklist dealing with the snakes of Kenya is Loveridge (1957). Since that date there has been a significant number of developments in the Kenyan herpetological field. This paper intends to update the nomenclature in the part of the checklist that concerns the snakes of Kenya and to extend the list to include all the species now known to occur within the political boundaries of Kenya. It also provides the range of each species within Kenya with specific locality records . -

KANYINKE SENA Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley 1 CASE STUDY ONE Indigenous Peoples’ Rights in the Kenya World Heritage (IIPFWH), as a standing global Lake System in the Great Rift Valley body aimed at representing indigenous peo- ples voices in the World Heritage Committee processes.5 The Committee referred to the establishment of the IIPFWH, “As an impor- tant reflection platform on the involvement of Indigenous Peoples in the identification, conservation and management of World Heritage properties, with a particular focus on the nomination process.” 6 Pursuant to the mandate of the Forum, this report aims at analyzing Indigenous Peoples’ involvement in the Kenya Lakes System in the Great Rift Valley World Heritage Site. The report is as result of extensive literature re- view and interviews with communities in and around the lakes that comprise the Kenya K. Sena: Lake Bogoria Lakes System. The Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Val- ley is a World Heritage site in Kenya which comprises three inter-linked, relatively shal- low, alkaline lakes and their surrounding territories. The lakes system includes Lakes Elementeita, Nakuru and Bogoria in the Rift Valley. The lakes cover a total area of 32,034 and was inscribed as a world heritage site in 2011. The inscription was based on the lakes system outstanding universal values and criterion (vii), (ix) and (x) as provided for, under paragraph 77 of the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention.
