Hope this year gives you a lot of opportunities to explore and grow. Kalasha Fine Jewels – Bangalore proudly presented “5K B-Ship Walkathon – 2020” an initiative of the Arya Vysya community, to raise awareness on the ill effects of single-use plastics which was held on 12th Jan 2020 at Bangalore. Kalasha is and always socially conscious, we will continue to spread awareness on topics which are useful for sustainable living. Important officials and members of the royal household would wear jewelled baglus on formal occasions, ornamented with large gemstones attached to the woven gold belts. Sahebzada Salamat Jah in Royal Regalia The Nizams enjoyed heavenly treasures and worldly comforts and pleasures. His Exalted Highness (H.E.H) Nawab Sir Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam, is remembered for being the staunchest ally of the British in India. The Nizam made a gift of diamond jewels, including a tiara and necklace, to Queen Elizabeth on the occasion of her marriage and it is still worn by the Queen and is known as the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace.     If the hat fits, wear it! By Canon Jim Foley Before I put pen to paper let me declare my interests. My grandfather, Michael Foley, was a silk hatter in one of the many small artisan businesses in Claythorn Street that were so characteristic of the Calton district of Glasgow in late Victorian times. Hence my genetic interest in hats of any kind, from top hats that kept you at a safe distance, to fascinators that would knock your eye out if you got too close. There are hats and hats. Beaver: more of a hat than an animal As students for the priesthood in Rome the wearing of a ‘beaver’ was an obligatory part of clerical dress. Later, as young priests we were required, by decree of the Glasgow Synod, to wear a hat when out and about our parishes. But then, so did most respectable citizens. A hat could alert you to the social standing of a citizen at a distance of a hundred yards. The earliest ‘top’ hats, known colloquially as ‘lum’ hats, signalled the approach of a doctor, a priest or an undertaker, often in that order. With the invention of the combustion engine and the tram, lum hats had to be shortened, unless the wearer could be persuaded to sit in the upper deck exposed to the elements with the risk of losing the hat all together. I understand that the process of shortening these hats by a few inches led to a brief revival of the style and of the Foley family fortunes, but not for long.

Coral, which was believed to posses protective powers, was often used in jewelry for children and young adults. A portrait painted by Luigi Bernero in 1817 of Maria Teresa of Savoy (1803– 1879) shows the 14-year-old Italian princess wearing a hair ornament almost exactly like this tiara. Most coral in Europe came from the sea around Naples and nearby Torre del Greco. In the 19th century coral jewelry became a fashionable souvenir. This was partly because people could travel more once the Napoleonic wars had ended in 1815, but also due to the growing popularity of Luigi Bernero (Italy, 1775–1848), Maria Teresa di Savoia.
