On I E E S Q U T T A C February 20 of that year, so began the First Coast chapter of the I S I T E L I N I E E L E M E N C Young Men’s Christian Association. Located downtown at the corner R R T A S T B A E R E of Duval and Laura streets, the membership consisted of just 12 A T Y C R C men and was known as a place to build character. S R S E S I D A C N D L H H T I • Since then, the First Coast Y’s rich history has been marked by C O L H E undeniable accomplishments: reopening the downtown Y in 1941 O R A C 1 2 after its suspension during the Great Depression; establishing T L L the Johnson Family YMCA (previously known as the colored Y) in • C N • O • O 1948; launching the first drowning prevention program in 1965, E O 1 R desegregating YMCA facilities in 1968, opening our doors to the P M H 3 2 P P first female member in 1971 and expanding into other Northeast M C O O Florida counties beginning in the 1980s. Tiger Academy ranked in the top 5 percent of schools statewide based on their improvement in reading and math. Even Florida Governor Rick Scott commented on Tiger Academy’s success, sending a personal note of congratulations to Principal Charles McWhite. Doug Milne’s YMCA story began in 1954. He was 11 years old, a student at West Riverside Elementary, when his dad took him for a drive on Riverside Avenue and he spotted the YMCA under construction.
