Indeed I am even named in the latest issue. (p.33. bottom right corner). I believe that I am M132. In particular, as a Land Surveyor rather than an Astronomer I am involved in the surveying side of Sir David Gill’s activities while he was at the Cape. Readers may be interested to know that Gill spent a huge amount of time and effort on laying the foundations of a survey scheme that was to stretch from South Africa to Egypt and subsequently join with the work of F G W Struve through Europe to form a continuous scheme to near Hammerfest in Northern Norway. Both Struve and Gill could be rightly termed geodesists as much as astronomers. The section of the work done by Struve between 1816 and 1855 stretched through 10 countries (today’s boundaries) from Hammerfest to the Black Sea and was inscribed as a World Heritage Monument in 2005. Work is now underway to get the part initiated by Gill and carried on by many others, as an extension to that W.H.M., to become This year is the bicentenary of the death, on the one covering 105º of latitude.   • Pepys Greenwich Walk
    Samuel Pepys’ Walk through the eastern City of London and Greenwich Distance = 5 miles (8 km) Estimated duration = 3 – 4 hours not including the river trip to Greenwich Nearest underground stations: This is planned to start from the Monument underground station, but could be joined at several other places including Aldgate or Tower Hill underground stations. You can do this Walk on any day of the week, but my recommendation would be to do the first part on a Wednesday or a Thursday because there may be free lunchtime classical recitals in one of the churches that are on the route. The quietest time would be at the weekend because the main part of this Walk takes place in the heart of the business district of London, which is almost empty at that time. However this does mean that many places will be closed including ironically the churches as well as most of the pubs and Seething Lane Garden. It’s a good idea to buy a one-day bus pass or travel card if you don’t already have one, so that you needn’t walk the whole route but can jump on and off any bus going in your direction. (Mirametrics) What are Messier Objects? • Messier objects are a list of astronomical sources compiled by Charles Messier, an 18th and early 19th century astronomer. He created a list of distracting objects to avoid while comet hunting. This list now contains over 110 objects, many of which are the most famous astronomical bodies known. The list contains planetary nebula, star clusters, and other galaxies. - Bobby Martinez The Telescope The telescope used to take these images is an Astronomical Consultants and Equipment (ACE) 24- inch (0.61-meter) Ritchey-Chretien reflecting telescope. It has a focal ratio of F6.2 and is supported on a structure independent of the building that houses it. It is equipped with a Finger Lakes 1kx1k CCD camera cooled to -30o C at the Cassegrain focus. It is equipped with dual filter wheels, the first containing UBVRI scientific filters and the second RGBL color filters. Messier 1 Found 6,500 light years away in the constellation of Taurus, the Crab Nebula (known as M1) is a supernova remnant. The original supernova that formed the crab nebula was observed by Chinese, Japanese and Arab astronomers in 1054 AD as an incredibly bright “Guest star” which was visible for over twenty-two months. The supernova that produced the Crab Nebula is thought to have been an evolved star roughly ten times more massive than the Sun.

    <title>Natural history collections and the book <sub-title>Hans Sloane’s A Voyage to Jamaica (1707-1725) and his Jamaican plants <running header> Natural history collections and the book Edwin D. Rose The Jamaican herbarium assembled by Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1753) in 1687 formed a recorded part of his extensive museum collection from the 1730s until its purchase by the British state in 1753. The detailed examination of the organization of the botanical specimens which account for the first seven volumes of the Sloane herbarium illustrates the use of printed books in natural history collecting practices in mid-eighteenth-century Britain. Sloane’s personal copy of his own work, A Voyage to Jamaica (1707-25), played a central role in the cataloguing and classifying this highly organized natural historical collection. The collection was arranged according to a coherent, rational system, composed of a range of printed works, manuscripts and specimen labels which interacted with the physical spaces in which they were kept. IN 1687, Hans Sloane (1660-1753) journeyed to Jamaica as physician for James II’s newly appointed governor, the Duke of Albemarle. Following the wishes of John Ray (1627-1705), who had asked Sloane to ‘search out and examine thoroughly the natural varieties of that island [Jamaica]’,1 he returned to England in 1689 with a huge quantity of natural history specimens. Perhaps the best known of these are his collections of plants, pressed in seven volumes containing nearly 800 new species.2 These formed the basis for his magnum opus: A Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S.

    JEREMY SHAKERLEY (1626-1655?) ASTRONOMY, ASTROLOGY AND PATRONAGE IN CIVIL WAR LANCASHIRE A. Chapman, M.A., D. Phil., F.R.A.S. The civil war period witnessed a remarkable activity in the pursuit of astronomy and allied subjects in the northern counties of England, and well over half a dozen mathematical practitioners were active between 1635 and 1650. Perhaps the best known of these men was Jeremiah Horrocks and his circle, including William Gascoigne and William Crabtree who were active around 1640, and made contributions of international importance in celestial mechanics and instrument design. 1 Though working some years later, Jeremy Shakerley was deeply influence by the work of Horrocks, and in many ways, saw himself as continuing in the same tradition. While Shakerley worked in greater isolation in many respects, he did maintain an active London correspondence, and often made reference to fellow astronomers in the Pendle district, where he originally resided. Shakerely's historical importance lies in the nine substantial letters which he exchanged with the London astrologer, William Lilly between 1648 and 1650, along with others to Henry Osborne and John Matteson. Most of these letters, now preserved in the Ashmole manuscripts in the Bodleian Library, are rich in information about the aspirations and problems of a provincial mathematical practitioner. He was an admirer of the theories of Copernicus and Kepler and argued for strictly natural causes in celestial phenomena. Yet he also perceived a hierarchy of correspondences and astrological demonstrations behind the physical laws, whereby man could interpret God's design, as a guide to conduct.

Still in its 1433 boundaries, with an ancient deer herd and a wealth of natural and historic features Greenwich Park attracts 4.7 million visitors a year which is estimated to rise to 6 million by 2030. We recognise that its capacity as an internationally significant heritage site and a treasured local space is under threat from overuse, tree diseases and a range of infrastructural problems. I am delighted to introduce this Greenwich Park Conservation Plan, developed as part of the Greenwich Park Revealed Project. The plan has been written in a new format which we hope will reflect the importance that we place on creating robust and thoughtful plans.

From his student days he had been an avid book collector. He formed relationships with antiquarian booksellers throughout the north of England. His interests were eclectic but focused on English literature of the 17th and 18th centuries. Several of my father’s books have survived in the present collection. During childhood I paid little attention to his books but in later years I too became a collector. During the war I was evacuated to the Lake District and my school in Keswick incorporated Greta Hall, where Coleridge lived with Robert Southey and his family.     Abasic requirement for studying the heavens is determining where in the sky things are. To specify sky positions, astronomers have developed several coordinate systems. Each uses a coordinate grid projected on to the celestial sphere, in analogy to the geographic coordinate system used on the surface of the Earth. The coordinate systems differ only in their choice of the fundamental plane, which divides the sky into two equal hemispheres along a great circle (the fundamental plane of the geographic system is the Earth's equator) . Each coordinate system is named for its choice of fundamental plane. The equatorial coordinate system is probably the most widely used celestial coordinate system. It is also the one most closely related to the geographic coordinate system, because they use the same fun­ damental plane and the same poles. The projection of the Earth's equator onto the celestial sphere is called the celestial equator. Similarly, projecting the geographic poles on to the celest ial sphere defines the north and south celestial poles. However, there is an important difference between the equatorial and geographic coordinate systems: the geographic system is fixed to the Earth; it rotates as the Earth does . The equatorial system is fixed to the stars, so it appears to rotate across the sky with the stars, but of course it's really the Earth rotating under the fixed sky. The latitudinal (latitude-like) angle of the equatorial system is called declination (Dec for short) . It measures the angle of an object above or below the celestial equator. The longitud inal angle is called the right ascension (RA for short).
