CARE CENTRES Félix Garrido psychosocial rehabilitation centre and care home in Sarriguren () FÉLIX GARRIDO PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION CENTRE AND CARE HOME

Town: Sarriguren (Navarre) Client: Government of Navarre Amount: € 3,886,223.54 Year: 2010

The Rehabilitation Centre is intended for people with severe mental disorders and is going to provide two types of services: the first, a residential care home, will provide 26 places in individual rooms, and secondly, a psychosocial rehabilitation centre, with capacity for 60 people. This works as a day-care centre and has support programmes and activities on health education, community integration, self-care, psychomotricity, psychoeducation, etc.

The building has three floors plus a semi-basement. The semi-basement houses installations, the ground floor is intended for care and rehabilitation and the first and second floors provide the Care Home facilities.

The building work was restarted. It had already begun, building the structure and the brickwork.

Project by Jaime Gaztelu (Architect) and José Luis Sola and Begoña Anaya (Surveyors).

The building uses high quality materials and finishes. Félix Garrido psychosocial rehabilitation centre and care home in Sarriguren (Navarre) Renovation and extension of the psychiatric area in . Phase I-II (Navarre) RENOVATION AND EXTENSION OF THE PSYCHIATRIC AREA IN PAMPLONA Phase I-II

Town: Pamplona (Navarre) Client: Government of Navarre Amount: € 11,035,026.00 (joint venture) Year: 2017

The building work consists of renovating the San Francisco Javier Geropsychiatry Centre pavilions and building two new structures next to the existing buildings.

The two new buildings will house medium and long term hospitalisation units and an area for out-patient programmes, services for adult patients with severe mental disorders.

One of the most singular characteristics of the building work is that it uses bush- hammered, coloured concrete with a bare finish and fibres, plus an application of an ageing patina and moulded into the formwork with 3 rabbets or recesses.

The main façades have been kept due to their singularity.

Project by the Antonio Vaíllo Studio.

Town: Alcalá de Gurrea (Huesca) Client: Alcalá de Gurrea Town Council Amount: € 2,328,231.00 Year: 2016

The project to build a Nursing Home in Alcalá de Gurrea is divided into several phases. Its fundamental aspects include adapting the building to the current terrain and its different levels, to minimise earth movements, making the most of its landscaping potential. To do so, a building was designed based on in situ concrete walls, using coloured concrete that blends perfectly into the environment.

The first phase involved external land development work, access and car parks, plus the common use building structure. The building will have three floors: a ground floor that gives access to a higher land platform, a first floor and a basement that will give access to the lower platform.

The second phase saw the construction of pavilion 2 for bedrooms and the external land development for it.

This also included adaptation, renewal and implementation of paving, asphalting and urban infrastructures (installation networks) on the roadway and access to the home.

The work was carried out in four different phases, and a fifth phase still has to be completed.

The centre will comprise a home for adults, a home for severely affected patients, a day-care unit and an occupational centre for people with physical and/or organic disabilities. This free-standing building is made up of a basement, three floors and an accessible rooftop terrace.

The basement is intended for a garage with 75 parking spaces, general installations, storerooms and staff changing rooms.

The ground floor has two clearly different access points, the main entrance on the south façade and the secondary entrance for admission of adult and severely disabled users to the home arriving in ambulances. The first floor houses the common services, toilets, office, floor control room, stretcher lift, first aid rooms, staff offices and access to the ramp hub, plus 11 bedrooms belonging to the home for the severely disabled.

The second floor provides the adult home that comprises 2 identical, symmetrical modules, with 8 double bedrooms.

The rooftop terrace houses the installations inherent to this type of building (air conditioning machinery, etc.) and a sundeck for users. There are three installation rooms, a core toilet block and the winding tower for the staircases and the stretcher lift. The building work consisted of renovating and refurbishing the current nursing home building, adapting it to the sector-based standards in force on social services for the elderly and providing it with a geropsychiatry unit.

The main building work consisted of adapting covered spaces for the staff changing room area, renovation of the roof, creation of the geropsychiatry unit on the second floor and adapting the remaining floors to standard (working on access points to bedrooms and bathrooms, as general guidelines).

Regarding land development, a covered area was built on the back patio for residents to use and an access ramp on the right wing.

Building work was carried out when the residence was open and running as usual (100 places).

Fitting out areas to transfer residents from the renovation zone to a new location.

Coordination with the residence management regarding the different work zones.

The building work followed strict deadlines.

Side entrances were opened through the façade to ease traffic at the main entrance and to be able to work on the upper floors.

The main entrance was left free during almost all the building work.

Outdoor work was carried out in phases so as not to affect areas used by residents for exercise. The building work consisted of constructing a new building that will connect with the current nursing home, also renovating and extending it. All this building work was carried out with the home running as usual, so it was extremely important to coordinate well with the centre managers.

Firstly, the new building was erected and successive phases refurbished and extended the existing residence building on all its floors (ground, first, second and semi-basement) by renovating installations, redistribution and internal restructuring of bedrooms and common areas. One important job was to improve the surround by fitting a ventilated façade. We finished off the work with outdoor land development of the residence, creating a new access to the installations from the outer roadway, a new ramp for the road access, reinforcing boundaries and perimeter enclosures.

Renovation of the existing building had to be divided into three phases (Phase IIIa, Phase IIIb, Phase IIIc). Each phase had to be finished and revised by the Provincial Government to be able to start the next phase.

During each phase, all the floors were demolished leaving each of them unobstructed, only with the external layer and the existing framework; provisional partitions had to be made previously and sealed off with an access door to the work zone, plus investigation of the existing installations because there were no plans.

The installations were a significant conditioning factor for the site’s development, since the residence has been running as usual and infinite provisional bypasses had to be made in all installations. The project consists of building a nursing home with 152 bedrooms and land development of the inner plot.

The building has a basement, ground floor + 2, in an open U shape, adapting to the existing plot and generating a functional square on two levels (ground floor and basement) designed for residents to be able to take a walk indoors.

The home is organised into the 1st and 2nd floors, around three living modules, each of which has its own living area and dining room to serve approximately 15- 20 bedrooms. On the ground floor there are two living modules and a central area of services with a cafeteria, chapel, offices and admin zones. In the basement, there will be the kitchen, laundry, gym, medical offices, funeral home and the staff changing rooms.

152 bedrooms, 10% of which are double rooms (15 units), representing a total capacity of 167 residents.

It will be organised into Living Units of approximately 20 bedrooms each, with their own living and dining areas and office.

The Government of Navarre decided to renovate Pavilion F of the Navarre Hospital to turn part of it into the New Forensic Pathology Department within the Navarre Legal Medicine Institute.

The building work consisted of interior renovation and construction of a new mezzanine floor over the ground floor, renovation of the ground floor and adapting the semi-basement that was practically unused. The building comprised a floor and an underground passage in the basement that connects up all the buildings in the hospital complex; the renovation creates a mezzanine floor to house different labs, the forensic pathologist’s office and the air conditioning room. The central hall of the mezzanine was fitted with a balcony that ran all along the hall and connected up the two side halls, made out of a bare metal structure and glass. The (existing) ground floor holds the vigil rooms, toilets, funeral home office and one of the autopsy rooms.

In the basement, the two sides of the underground passage were excavated thereby giving new rooms that are going to be used as cold chambers, storerooms, an autopsy room for decaying and infectious bodies.

The existing façades were kept, just changing the joinery. A new platform and lift were built on the south façade.

Building work carried out with the Forensic anatomical service running as usual.
