St Mary’s Church bell ringers have been contacted in relation to a Great War casualty and bell ringer, Private Edgar Merry. Private Edgar Merry was a past resident of Freeland, and according to the Rolls of Honour for Bell Ringers was a member of the Oxford Diocesan Guild and a Freeland ringer. He was one of 33 ringers who are known to have died in August 1916 during the Great War. Here is a brief history received from Alan Regin who has contacted us.

Private Edgar Merry died on the 29 August 1916 aged 23. Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) 10th Bn. Service No. 19584. Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, France, Pier and Face 4 D. ********************************* Letter from our Rector: Friends,

I am waiting for something at the moment. I don't know when I'll hear and I think it might be good news ... but I don't know and I don't know when I'll find out.

Waiting is really difficult isn't it?

You try and get on with everyday life, but your mind is always drawn back to the thing that you are waiting for. Waiting can be quite difficult.

I am reminded about how God's people waited for the Messiah. God had promised that he would send his Messiah, or Christ (or 'anointed one'). God had told his people that he would send the Messiah, but they had to wait 700 years.

Imagine how they must have felt waiting. No one who had heard the promise originally was alive when the promise was fulfilled - nor their parents, nor even their great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandparents! Imagine keeping a promise alive - imagine trying to sustain that hope.

700 years of waiting ...... and then finally Jesus did arrive - because God always keeps his promises, even if we have to wait a bit.

Now that's a wait!

I'm not sure whether or not God might have promised what I am waiting for - but I do realise that I can at least learn from the patience of God's people.

Hopefully I will hear soon - hopefully I won't have to wait 700 years!

Wishing you patience in the things you have to wait for.

With all best wishes, David

1 Abbey Street Eynsham OX29 4TB 12 RESTORATION OF FREELAND WAR MEMORIAL Freeland War Memorial has had no recorded maintenance carried out since its inauguration in 1919. It has become evident that this is now necessary.

As the war memorial is within St Mary’s churchyard, permission has had to be sought and approved by the appropriate Diocesan authorities.

An application to the War Memorials Trust for a grant towards the cost of cleaning and repairing the war memorial is nearing completion ready for submission. The deadline for the grant application has now been revised to the 30th September by the War Memorials Trust. Tenders have been obtained from a number of local stone masonry contractors. The initial work will be for cleaning and repair, but upon completion it may be necessary to obtain further tenders for enhancing some of the inscription lettering and numerals which have been affected by nearly 100 years of weathering.

The total cost, excluding any grant hopefully received, is estimated to be in the region of £1,000, and grants will only be considered by the Trust for up to 50% of the eligible costs. It is hoped that the additional money needed can be raised by individual donations or village fund raising events. Any contributions would be very gratefully received.

It is hoped that all work can be completed before the Remembrance Service to be held at St Mary’s Church on Sunday 13th November, when the memorial will be rededicated by our Rector, Rev. David Tyler.

If you wish to make a donation this can be sent to John Hewitt, 121 Broadmarsh Lane, Freeland, OX29 8QP. Please make cheques payable to St Mary the Virgin Freeland PCC. Gift aid forms are available from John Hewitt. All donations will be processed through the PCC and will be placed in a restricted fund to only be used for the War Memorial. Any monies received, over and above the amount needed, will be placed in a contingency fund for future use towards the upkeep of the memorial.

14 FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL - LISA’S NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 18TH JULY 2016 New safety surfacing As some of you will have noticed, a new rubber mulch safety surfacing has been installed underneath the wooden troll climber on the playing field. Unfortunately, the rubber matting that was installed was inadequate when impact testing was carried out (despite reassurances from the manufacturer that it was sufficient). So the Parish Council have had to purchase a new rubber mulch surface that has passed the impact test and is a great addition to the area. Please take care around the surfacing as it is slightly raised above the grass.

A Unitary Council in Oxfordshire As reported last month, there is currently a debate about changes to the structure of local government in Oxfordshire which could support devolution of powers and funding from government and improve public service delivery. Different preferred options have been put forward by the county on one hand and the district and city councils on the other.

Following advice from Government about the need to develop proposals with broad support, all the Oxfordshire councils have agreed to work together to discuss areas of common ground, assess potential options and establish whether they can agree a way forward building on the work they have both done to date.

Do follow the progress as this will inevitably affect how Council services are delivered in the future, and possibly Council Tax charges. Information will be shown at www.westoxon.gov.uk , www.oxfordshire.vision and www.oxfordshire.gov.uk

Improved access to playing field The Parish Council is continuing to work on plans to replace the gates from Pigeon House Lane and to construct a new path that will run from the Village Hall down the side of the field to the Pigeon House Lane entrance.

WODC new waste collection arrangements District Council has announced that Ubico Ltd will be its new waste and recycling contractor from October 2017. A summary of the main changes to the new waste and recycling collection service from October 2017 is as follows: wheelie bins to be introduced (to replace the black recycling boxes) for the majority of recycling materials with glass collected separately in a black box; recycling collections to become fortnightly alternating with general household rubbish; introduce an ‘opt-in’ chargeable garden waste collection service; new kerbside collection for small electrical items.

There will be no changes to fortnightly household rubbish or weekly food collections.

More information about the new service will be sent to householders during 2017.

Field spraying As there has been substantial weed growth on the playing field this year, the Parish Council have arranged to have the playing field sprayed. Continued…………..

**************************************** Thank you everyone who took part, cycling, walking, sponsoring participants and welcoming visitors to the churches in 2015. The total amount raised was £137,382, including £20,000 gift aid tax rebate, which was an amazing achievement. Out of 809 people taking part, 90 were under 18 and 31 were over 80. About twice as many cycled as walked and some were sponsored for sitting and welcoming in the churches!

The full list of churches and the amounts they raised is available on Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust’s (OHCT) website at www.ohct.org.uk. This helped OHCT award grants to 45 churches totalling £248,500. The list of grants made in 2014-2015 is also available on the website in the Annual Report. Long Hanborough Methodist Chapel has received £10,000 towards the cost of the present refurbishment.

This year’s event will be on Saturday 10th September 2016. (It is the 31st Sponsored Ride & Stride). Please note the date in your diary and begin thinking about taking part, either visiting churches, welcoming visitors or sponsoring. If you intend walking or cycling, it is not too early to begin training.

If you are put off by the hassle of collecting sponsorship money, you can save the bother by using www.justgiving.com

You may ride or stride on a different day but not all churches may be open. John Fox

20 FREELAND GARDENING CLUB

At the meeting in July Duncan Coombs, a speaker we have had before, came to show pictures and tell us about ‘A Visit to Tibet and it’s Plants’. He showed many indigenous plants most of us had not seen before and a map of the journey they took and interesting things they saw on the way. A few in the audience had been to the region and could talk to him about similar experiences they had encountered. The talks about countries are always popular as they whet some people’s appetite to visit them. Tibet though is not an easy country to get into and Duncan’s party were very lucky to be able to do so.

August is the month we entertain ourselves with the annual Social. Each year a theme is chosen for the party and some enjoy dressing up appropriately. This year the theme is ‘Kings and Queens’ which gives plenty of scope to come in something regal! There is a very good buffet and a few table games and lots of opportunity to talk to members you may not know or get time to speak to at the usual meetings.

The last meeting of the Club year is on Monday 26th September at 7.30pm in Freeland Hall when a new speaker, John Page, will tell us about ‘Choice Gardens of the Midlands’. As most of these will be within easy reach of Freeland it will be really helpful to find out about some we have been unaware of. The Club has visited a number of excellent gardens in the Midlands but there are sure to be some we can include in another year’s programme. This is the last meeting before the AGM in October.

Visitors and new members are always welcome at our meetings and so many people who do come say what a welcoming and friendly club we are! There is a Bring and Buy Plant Sale at each Hall meeting.

For further information about the Club contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd or ring 881420. Janet Dalton - Publicity Secretary

To mark this anniversary, we will be hosting a celebratory event on Saturday 17th September, 2-4pm, at 138 Wroslyn Road. There will be lots of Roald Dahl children’s books available, to coincide with Roald Dahl Day that week. Children will have the opportunity to decorate their very own Dream Jar, like the ones the BFG uses to store dreams. For grown-ups, we’ll bring out all the books that are usually kept in storage, for you to take as many as you like!

Thanks again to everyone that continues to use the Little Free Library, whether you take books or give them, it is you that makes it such a success.

Harvest Thanksgiving at St Mary’s

Our Family Service and Harvest Thanksgiving at St Mary’s, Freeland is on Sunday 2nd October at 10am.

All are welcome; we hope you can join us.

No. 11 BUS SERVICE WITNEY - FREELAND - OXFORD The following item is taken from the Stagecoach website (www.stagecoachbus.com), originally posted on the website on 8th August 2016:

“We have been running service 11 on a commercial basis for two years. During that time passenger numbers have declined. The majority of the passenger journeys are made on the section of route between Eynsham and Oxford which is already served by service S1, with the 233 providing an alternative for travel between Long Hanborough, North Leigh and Witney.

It is with regret that we have to announce that we have decided to reduce the level of service on the 11 to reflect the current level of passenger trips. With effect from Monday 5th September, a new Monday to Friday timetable to be introduced which will maintain two morning commuter journeys into Oxford and one evening return journey. There will also be additional trips in between for shopping and other trips. There will be no service on a Saturday or Sunday.

Towards Oxford all journeys will operate via Freeland following the current route along Wroslyn Road towards the A4095.

In the morning, journeys from Oxford will run direct to Freeland and will not serve Hanborough. In the afternoon, journeys from Oxford will run to the current route to a different timetable.

All journeys will operate a new route into Oxford city centre via Oxpens and Castle Street using stop E2 on Castle Street for setting down and boarding.

In Eynsham the new 11 service will run a more direct route via Hanborough Road, Mill Street and Eynsham Church and will not serve Spareacre Lane in Eynsham. (same as the current 0752 departure from Freeland)

Buses will no longer divert into Madley Park estate in Witney.”

The revised 11 service timetable can be seen at: https://tiscon-maps- stagecoachbus.s3.amazonaws.com/Timetables/

Oxford_Timetables/4_Sep_2016/11_valid_from_4_Sept_2016.pdf

*************************************** FREELAND CRICKET CLUB During June and July we almost caught up with all the cancelled matches from April and May- so we were all very busy. The Under 11s played three matches, winning two and losing one, to finish up with a record of 6 wins 2 losses. The Under 13s played four matches; winning one and losing 3. The win against North Oxford saw us amass 142 runs with three batsman retiring. In the last match against Josh Soanes with 15 and James Gild with 20 almost won us the match. The Under 9s hosted a Kwik Cricket Festival which clashed with Beth Soanes' birthday- she managed to play in the festival and go to her swimming party at Woodstock in the same evening. Finally the Yeoman played the Bear in a 30 over match for the Bear Cup. The Yeoman batted first and scored 139 with Marc Buckingham top scorer with 45 runs. In reply the Bear struggled against tight bowling from Ashley Wells and Tom Brown, who are U14 and U13 players, and ended up 79 all out. There were a couple of stand out moments. Firstly Ben Halsey (playing for the Bear) smashed Sam Walker for a 6, and then getting caught out attempting to hook and getting caught spectacularly by wicket keeper Mark Deakin. Special mention to the Captain, Trevor Johnson, who pulled a hamstring attempting a quick single. A great day was rounded off with a BBQ in the pub! Simon Brown 29

***************************************** FREELAND WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Ten members of Freeland WI set off on the Downton Trail in Bampton to check out the locations for filming of the TV series. We peered over the walls of Mrs Crawley's House, visited the Cottage Hospital housed in the Library, checked out the Grantham Arms and the very lovely Church and then headed to Bampton Garden Centre where we enjoyed afternoon tea.

The WI has two events coming up which we hope people in the village will support and participate in. The first is the Village Quiz on Friday 2nd September at the Village Hall at 7.30pm, closely followed by the Mass Garage Sale on Sunday 11th September from 12noon - 5.00pm. We hope as many of you as possible will clear out your cupboards and have a sale, details from Lesley Jenkins. Maps of those participating will be available on the day and the event will be advertised as widely as possible.

The next WI meeting is Monday 12th September at 8.00pm where we will learn about the history of Witney Blankets.

For further details please contact Lorraine Pengilley 01993 881129 or see our website http://freelandwi.weebly.com/

***************************************** th THE UNACCEPTED FREELAND RAMBLERS 7 August 2016 We suffered a huge disappointment this month as no dogs showed up at all for what turned out to be a splendid rummage about in the woods. The secret bunker we visited was fascinating although events turned ugly when the pooh-sticks competition ended in violence. Normality returned after a sumptuous picnic was enjoyed by one and all. The record of the month has been abandoned owing to lack of interest but we have a misquote from a Mr P.P. Anting instead “Success is blindly going on from one failure to another, without losing your enthusiasm”. I think we’ll adopt this.

The Silver Cross pram fiasco, which some idiot insisted on taking with him, stood up well to the rough terrain but the same could not be said for the owner, however, who was thwarted by tree roots and the rest of the ramblers.

Mrs Trellis is threatened with fracking and demands an urgent meeting!

Now, our ‘mapping department’ do try their best but they were put to shame by a young lady rambler who rescued us, leading us through a haystack in order to get some of us home safely.

Newcomers are always welcome. The next exciting event: The Oxfordshire Yeoman, 9.30am, Sunday 4th September, 2016. From your El Presidento and wonky pram owner

I would like to thank all who have continued to support the Football Club over the past year. Your contributions are very much appreciated. With your help we have managed to support 2 senior teams and 2 youth teams in the past year. This season we have added a further youth team who will be playing on Saturday mornings. We will be calling round in the next month to collect next year’s monies so hopefully we can count on your continued support. If there is anybody else who would like to join the 200 Club please contact me on the number below. At the moment we pay out £20/£10/£5 every 4 weeks plus a £100 jackpot at Christmas. Jon Langford 07774 114310

There have been many new additions to both Men’s sides during Pre Season which will certainly strengthen the Club throughout the season.

Freeland Mens First Team have started unbeaten during Pre Season so far with wins against Eynsham Sports and Social 4-1, Clanfield 2-0 and a very impressive 10-2 against Tower Hill Stars. The fixtures have now been announced and the First Team will start their first league match on Tuesday 30th August at home to Yarnton – 18.30 kick off. They will then travel away to Mansfield Road on Saturday 3rd September – 14.00 kick off. Finally, they will then face Charlgrove at home on Tuesday 6th September for a kick off at 18.30. All three are very winnable games so we hope they get off to a good start.

The Reserves will start their first league match at home to OUP Reserves on Wednesday 31st August – 18.30 kick off. They will then play at home again on Saturday 3rd September – 14.00 kick off against Yarnton Reserves. Lastly, they will travel away to Charlton Reserves on Wednesday 7th September for a 18:30 kick off.

We all look forward to the opening games and hope to see some of you down on the playing field supporting the village side.

On a separate note; it has been brought to our attention that regrettably, there has been some significant damage to the football goals. Whilst these are costly to replace, they also pose a danger to the children that have been seen climbing on them, so please may we remind parents and local residents to be vigilant of this. 36 1st HANBOROUGH FREELAND SCOUT GROUP

It’s been an extremely busy and active summer since our last report, with all sections enjoying various outdoor activities, camps and expeditions.

Beavers have been racing around on bikes, exploring the lake at Eynsham Hall, pond dipping and meadow sweeping at Combe Mill and earning both stages1and 2 of their Gardeners badge. Congratulations go to Jacob E, Jacob W, Dougie, Ava and Elliot, who were invested in June.

Cubs have worked hard at obtaining many of the new challenge badges, helped by having a record turn out at Cubfest Camp at Cornhill Park in June. 26 of our Cubs took part, enthusiastically trying out over 90 activities, in what proved to be the highlight of a celebratory year to mark 100 years of Cub Scouting. Full advantage has been taken of the good weather, with Cubs also making dens in the woods and learning how to build camp fires to cook sausages on sticks.

Many of our Scouts went off to Week’s Camp in Dorset during the sunny May half term, participating in a fun packed programme, which included a coastal hike, rafting, kayaking, high ropes and visits to Splashdown Pool and the Tank Museum. 11 Scouts then attended the County Aqua Camp in June, joining in a number of exciting water activities. As many meetings as possible have been spent outside on hikes and building fires and shelters within Eynsham Park.

Explorers have been working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award this year, focusing on the expedition section over the last few months. The first qualifying expedition was hold at the beginning of July for the 6 Explorers who had completed their training. All 6 passed, so well done to Barney, Sam, Daisy, Henry, Ella and Lorna! The remaining Explorers will resume their training in September, ready to embark on their qualifying expedition in due course.

Mark Gardiner (Asst Scout Leader) and Sam Cherry (Asst Explorer Scout Leader) have just completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award 4 day expedition along the River Wye, together with Joe Russell (former Explorer from Long Hanborough) and Lucy Webster (from Radley). Both leaders have now completed all 5 sections necessary to pass and will be duly invited to a presentation at St James’s Palace in London, in the presence of the Earl of Wessex or the Duke of Edinburgh himself. 38 Continued………. Most impressively, Mark and Sam have recently received their Queen Scout Award, the highest award recognised in Scouting. They were subsequently invited to take part in the St George’s Day Parade at Windsor Castle, a wonderful honour in itself. We are immensely proud of their double achievement!

In July, 9 of our Scouts and Explorers flew off to Iceland for the International Scout Jamboree. Over 1,000 Scouts from 11 countries took part, with 14 nights camping at Úlfljótsvatn Scout Centre. The first week was dedicated to the Jamboree, with a full outdoor Scouting activity programme, followed by a further 7 night stay, using the campsite as a base for exploring the south coast. With 110 Scouts from Oxfordshire participating, this massive trip incorporated time in Reykjavik, a 10 hour volcano hike, the Golden Circle Tour, a walk down a lava tube and a midnight swim in the second coldest lake in Iceland! The most impressive photo of their adventure has to be the one of them all standing on the bridge between the Eurasian and the North American tectonic plates - what a memorable moment!

The Group’s 30th Anniversary Family Fun Day and AGM held on 26th June was a great success, with a large turnout enjoying the presentations, climbing wall, games and refreshments. Our next community event will be the Hanborough Show on Saturday 10th September, so please join us on our BBQ/activity stand. We also plan to hold a fundraising evening at The Yeoman, so watch this space for further details!

Looking ahead, numbers are rapidly growing across all sections. There will be 37 Scouts this coming term and we welcome volunteer helper Paul Quartermain, as we say goodbye and thank you to Jason Andrew for his time as Leader. Explorers has doubled in size this year, with 18 members from September, and we URGENTLY need more adult volunteers for a few hours on Wednesday evenings to help plan and lead this section (aged 14-18). After 5 years, Nic Claypole is sadly standing down as Leader in January 2017 and we need at least 1 Leader/3 Assistant Leaders to continue running. Parents are invited to a short, informal meeting at 8.30pm in the Newell Room on Wednesday 14th September, to see if they might know of anyone willing to fulfil these roles. Without adequate support, the section will have no choice but to close, which would be an awful shame when numbers are thriving.

Thank you for continuing to support our Scout Group. Ali Beaver, Publicity Representative
