Netball Hutt Valley has been making headlines for many reasons in 2011.

• We have been awarded the Hutt City Sport and Leisure Community Award as well as winning the Wellington Airport Regional Community Award for Sport & Leisure for our efficient organisation and use of volunteers • Our hard working vice president was nominated for a Sparc Wellington ‘Volunteer of the Year Award’ • One of our umpires was upgraded to become a New Zealand ‘A’ umpire • Hutt Valley Umpires Association has over 50 qualified members • A HV bench official was selected to bench control at the World Games in , others officiated at representative games throughout New Zealand, were all prominent at local and regional games • Players, Coaches, Managers and Umpires were selected for representative fixtures. These people were all given recognition at the Regional Awards dinner held in October.

Thanks must go to Phillipa, Genny, Joanne, Tara, Tasi and the Executive who have helped make all this possible.

2012 will see the restructure of the Region and I am sure Netball Hutt Valley will ensure our very successful and capable Centre will retain their identity, success and progress towards the future.

Good Luck and Best Wishes to you all for an enjoyable and productive 2012 season.

Discussion Please note the new game default penalty structure. Confirmed this penalty applies to the team not the club as it is the team that defaults the game.

The minimum number of players needed to play a game is 5.

Joanne Paora raised the reduction in fees and in the number of players that can be registered to a team. It has been reduced to 9 players, following the open registration policy of last year being abused by a number of clubs.

Deregistering players, this is done on a case by case basis at the discretion of the Netball Hutt Valley Executive.

Does the new default fee apply to schools? Yes but it is less of an issue with schools and discretion will be used.

Why were the fees raised from $700 to $1100 last year? The fee increase was to cover the region levy required to cover the Pulse debt. Netball Hutt Valley then changed the structure to allow an open number of registrations so that clubs could disperse this increase more fairly across its members. It has returned to $900 this year following some clubs abusing the open registration policy.

6 Late registrations are still done at the office on Saturdays. Or can be done prior to the playing Saturday online, with forms available on the website. Email Phillipa to confirm online procedure. If you register more than 9 players your invoice will be adjusted accordingly. To qualify as a school team, all players in the team must attend college. These players can fill in for other teams in the club but the school team must only use college players to be eligible for the reduced fees.

General Business Ann Hay - Chair Netball Wellington Region Ann opened passing on apologies from Netball Wellington Region CEO Chris McNay, he was disappointed not to be able to attend. And extended an invitation to members to attend the Netball Wellington Region AGM being held on Tuesday 22nd March.

Update on the Netball Wellington Region restructure An Establishment Board was set up with representatives from the 5 centres, and 2 independent advisors – Nigel Kirkpatrick & Kevin Wilson . The recommendations from the restructure review are to reduce the layers within the region, as there are currently lots of processes and positions being duplicated in the different centres. This will allow for the centres to operate in a more cost effective way, with better access to funding as a whole. It will also allow a better development of skills and a more consistent approach to how we deliver these skills. The first step in the way forward has been to appoint a CEO, whose responsibility it is to take on board the recommendations and implement the changes. All the staff in the region are currently reporting to the new CEO with a focus on becoming one organisation. The new CEO Chris McNay is also CEO to the Pulse, aligning the franchise with Netball Wellington Region. The CEO has been in the position for 1 month, and has been busy with meetings with all the staff to best work out the way forward. Expect to see progress towards the new structure in the next 5-6 months. Some members asked exactly what layers are to be removed from the current structure? Ann responded in saying it is not one layer in particular but a focus on a more efficient way of working, providing a more central hub for our business. We would still have the centres at the grass roots level but there would be better behind the scenes resourcing, direction and strategy. More results at a higher level. Important to note there would be no changes at a constitutional level. There will be little impact to the delivery of our competition as most of the changes would go on at a higher level. The question arose about how will the new structure be funded, will our fees go into a ‘big pot’? Exactly how the financial side of the new structure will work is still to be determined. The CEO is in the process of establishing a good financial model for the new structure so that will take into account the needs of all the centres. The question was asked, who is funding the new CEO? The Pulse pays half and Netball Wellington Region are currently funding the other half out of the Netball Wellington Region budget. The intention of the review is not to cost more but to spend more wisely. There is an assumption that we will lose our centre and that we will become one. This is not that case, the objective of the review is not to fix things that are not broken but to make some operations more efficient and effective by centralising these operations therefore reducing unnecessary duplication.

Netball New Zealand is also currently under review, and are also looking at a similar super centre model. The question was raised, what would happen to our centre sponsorship relationships? The CEO has noted the success of centres securing sponsorship and would be happy for these to continue but can also see opportunity for bigger partnerships based on the entire region. It would give us better access to sponsors as we would have more to offer potential sponsors.

7 An example of some of the resources we can expect to be streamlined are; staff, finances, high performance development and delivery, draws, websites, registrations and administration. The objective is to avoid replication and reduce costs in the process, so the money can go back into netball. Updates on the restructure will be communicated to all the centres via emails and newsletters, and will be on the regional website. The process will be open and transparent and communication is welcomed. The board has already accepted the outcome of the review so the changes are in the implementation stage not the consultation stage. The consultation stage was held some time ago and many invitations were extended to our members to be involved. All decisions will be made with thought and consideration. The objective is to make things better not worse. All of the 5 centres are moving forward together and there will be no change in the delivery of our competition. It has been noted that out Centre is very effective and is run very well. As our constitution will not change there will be no ‘winding up’, this would also be a decision that would need to come to a vote so it is very unlikely that this will happen. There has been an acknowledgement that our funds are reserved for our centre, again these are all points to be given thought at the implementation of the new financial model. But in the long run the centre should be better off. New Netball Hutt Valley President Genny Jarvis will organise an information evening to keep members informed. Pulse Debt Update Netball Wellington Region agreed to only pay $100,000 towards the Pulse debt of $400,000. Approximately $45,000 was collected from the members of the region last year. The balance will be paid over 3 years. Walter Nash Stadium Upgrade Update Joanne Paora gave an update on the Walter Nash Stadium Upgrade and the impact on our court resurfacing and lighting upgrade. There has been some progress on the Walter Nash Upgrade, we now have an Architect onboard, and the project has a start date of 2012/2013. The project will cost 12 million and will take one year to complete. We will lose 4 outdoor courts in order to gain 3 new indoor courts, giving a total of 5 indoor courts. The council has revised the project making it more of a community project by developing the stadium and surrounding facilities into a sporting and community hub. This will increase the usage and viability of the project. The hub will encompass a number of services – retail, gym, stadium, library and café. This will allow greater community investment and provide a real asset to our community. And will allow for more potential when it comes to the fundraising for the project. And it will service more than one sport. However these alterations to the project has delayed the court resurfacing and lighting upgrade as it is more efficient to complete this alongside the development of the new sporting hub as more infrastructure is now required. So we are not spending our funds of the court resurfacing and lighting upgrade at the moment and the Hutt City Council has guaranteed the funds they agreed to contribute, $85,000 will remain on hold for the project. The small hoops court affected by the development will be relocated but it can’t be determined exactly where at this stage. It is very likely that having 6 indoor courts will change our competition structure. In the year of development we will only have 6 courts available, so we can expect some changes to the competition. Gold Coin Day proceeds going to Christchurch Earthquake Support Christine Waaka requested that the proceeds from the first Gold Coin Day on 7th May 2011 be donated to the Christchurch Earthquake . Everyone was in strong support and this request will go to the Executive on 17th March for confirmation.

Lorraine Duffy – Extended her thanks to Tasi Betteridge for stepping up to the President title and doing a great job. And to Phillipa Whitney for her excellent work as Centre Manager. And to Sue Hare for her wonderful work as the NHV Treasurer, and for keeping us in the black! Genny Jarvis – On behalf of the Netball Hutt Valley Executive and members Genny presented flowers to Tasi Betteridge as a thank you for all her hard work as President of Netball Hutt Valley in 2010. Tasi responded saying she loves Netball Hutt Valley and that’s why we do it! The meeting closed at 7.54pm

9 PRESIDENT'S ANNUAL REPORT 2011

This being my first year as President the 2011 netball season was a year of challenges, a year of frustrations and anxiety but very rewarding.

Firstly I wish to take this opportunity to thank all the business people in our community whose support makes our sport a very rewarding one to be involved with. The sponsorships provided by these businesses help us to nurture, develop and foster netball in the Hutt Valley. Thank you to Ray Betteridge of Betteridge Engineering Limited and to Luke Wirangi of Atiawa Toa FM who have sponsored NHVC over the last 16-18 years and are still doing so today. Thank you also to Jarvis Plumbgas Services Ltd, NZTS, Athletes Foot Queensgate, Les Mills Hutt City, Trophy House, Sport Check, Pro-Active Physio, Body Logic Therapy, Surge Electrical, DKGM, NZ Community Trust, Pub Charities, Southern Trust, Pelorus Trust, Endeavour Trust, Grass Trust, Four Winds Foundation, New World – Naenae and Lower Hutt, and to McDonald’s Lower Hutt/Queensgate who sponsor our junior netball competition. The grants received from funders are crucial to our operation and we are extremely grateful for the support we have received. However, with huge demands being made for the same dollar and less sites available our chances of receiving funding as we’re used to is diminishing every year.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome the Intermediate teams from Upper Hutt who have joined our competition this season. These teams joining and an increase in senior registrations meant we had to change the times of the rounds to accommodate another complete round without playing in the dark. You might have seen our umpires running from game to game as they adjusted to the shorter change over times. Your patience was appreciated if they were a bit late. Next season will probably see some more tweaking and your patience and support will be appreciated.

The Netball Wellington Region (NWR) is in the final processes of a restructure which proposed will bring all netball in the region under one umbrella. What this means for all the centres and how netball will be administered is the question everyone has been asking and has brought about some anxiety and insecurity, however a General Manager and Netball Development Manager have now been appointed and netball in the Wellington area is about to move into an exciting new phase. At our centre, there will be no changes to how we administer and deliver netball, but there may be some changes on the development side. These changes will be advised to all clubs and schools as the process progresses through the off season. This has been a process that has been worked through for two plus years and a lot of people have invested a lot of time in making sure that it is delivered in a timely and appropriate manner and with the minimum amount of distress.

Netball New Zealand nationally is also going through a restructure that was bought to the region in a road show where Raelene Castle (NNZ CEO) presented it to all the local centres in November. Again some exciting changes too look forward to but they should not affect the running of our centre as we know it. We will continue to deliver netball at grass roots level without any fuss and in a professional manner.

The Walter Nash Stadium (WNS) extension is due to start at the end of 2012 and open in 2014. Because of this project the HCC have requested that NHVC put the resurfacing of the courts and the lighting upgrade on hold until after the WNS extension is completed. This is another exciting project that finally looks like it is all going to happen. There will be some disruptions to our competition but probably not until the 2013 season. We have seen the proposed plans and they look amazing. When this is finished we will have a top class indoor / community venue which we can all be proud of with our courts and lights being upgraded in the process.

We have had many successes in NHVC in the 2011 season and you can read of them in other reports within this Annual Report but I would like to add my own personal congratulations to all our coaches, managers, players, umpires and bench officials who have achieved at local, national and international levels. Tasi and her band of umpires do an amazing job and they continue to be the envy of the other centres. Our umpires are growing in number at all levels from junior whistlers to seniors and we are very proud of all their achievements. Congratulations and keep up the good work, without the selfless energy of these people we wouldn’t be able to run such a successful competition.

10 NHVC Finals Weekend began with Prizegiving for McDonald’s Lower Hutt Juniors on Friday 26 August where around 1500 children, mums, dads, grandparents, aunties, uncles etc all crammed into the Walter Nash Stadium. Afterwards every player was presented with a McDonald’s voucher and water bottle before proudly running off home with their respective caregiver. Saturday 27th August began with the McDonald’s Lower Hutt Intermediate Prizegiving at 9.30am where a gathering of around 800. At both junior prizegiving’s Scott & Robyn Horton of McDonald’s Lower Hutt were there to present certificates, medals and trophies to all the winning teams and I take this opportunity to thank Scott & Robyn from McDonald’s Lower Hutt & Queensgate for their ongoing sponsorship of grass roots netball in the Hutt Valley.

All senior grade finals were played at 12.30 and 1.30. The Intermediate Challenge Match was played at 10.30 in the WNS, The Premier 1 2nd round final was played at 12.45pm as the curtain raiser to the Betteridge Engineering Premier 1 Final at before the Senior Prizegiving at 3.15 pm.

Our “Golden Girls” too are celebrated on our Finals Day. These are Life Members or Service Award Members who have given years of service to netball in the Hutt Valley. NHVC are honored to have the opportunity to recognize their service by inviting them all to lunch at the clubrooms where friendships are renewed amid hilarity and wonderful camaraderie. This is continued in the Walter Nash Stadium over afternoon tea during the final of the Premier 1 grade.

All of the above could not happen and would not happen without great planning and organisation. To this end I extend sincere thanks to Centre Manager, Phillipa Whitney – this woman is a wiz and we are so fortunate to have her at the core of our establishment. Joanne Paora, Netball Development Officer, is an asset to our centre – her knowledge and her passion is infectious and I am extremely grateful to Jo for sharing her enthusiasm with every coach be they a novice or experienced. Thank you to Tara Sellars, Administration, yet another member of our staff who goes beyond the call of duty and is just amazing in her support of everything that is happening in NHVC. Thank you to Darryl Turley, Caretaker, who makes sure everything on the courts look clean, tidy and up to scratch every Saturday before members arrive – thank you. Last but not least, thank you to Sue Hare our Office Administrator on Saturday’s – your patience and your organisation of the Saturday competition is just brilliant!

To Mrs Mary McCarthy, President Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Association – thank you to you and all the umpires for your support. For all the pre-season classes, club trials, rep trials, rep tournaments, schools classes, club classes, fitness sessions and theory sessions you have been called on by the centre to run, your team have always been there – sincere thanks.

To NHVC Executive Committee 2011 I cannot thank you enough for your support and encouragement throughout this season. As volunteers you have been called on to tackle many difficult situations and I am extremely proud of the professionalism and passion you displayed as you have deliberated and made well informed decisions. To Tasi Betteridge (Vice President and my mentor), Sue Hare (Treasurer), Maureen Turley (Registration Secretary) Kora Pene (Piwi) and a big welcome to Melissa Tamanui Committee Member – my sincere thanks for your dedication and passion to the sport and the netball.

My special thanks to our Patron Mrs Lorraine Duffy whose constant support and encouragement is very much appreciated. Lorraine can be found every Saturday in the umpires room.

As we look forward to netball in 2012, NHVC is in good hands and by working together we will continue to go from strength to strength. Regionally, there will be changes, and I ask that everyone exercises patience and tolerance. NWR will be a force and we will be part of that force delivering excellent netball to the Netball Wellington Region.

REPRESENTATIVE CAMP

On the 17th July our Year 7 and 8 representative teams (40 players) were privileged to attend a skills camp with Ngarama Milner-Olsen, Jamilah Gupwell and Bessie Manu. The camp was for 2 hours and the Pulse players came and covered specialist midcourt defensive and shooting sessions with the girls. The feedback that we got was that it was very valuable interesting. and well worthwhile. Our thanks to the Pulse players for taking the time out of their busy schedules, to help our young talented netballers.

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Skill sessions for our Primary and Intermediate players were held once again. Pre season in (February), in season (May and June), off season (November) Fun Ferns (5-8yrs) Future Ferns (9 and 10yrs) and Mini Ferns (11-13yrs) 100 attended Fun Ferns, 36 Future Ferns, and 27 attended Mini Ferns.

Our school holiday program in April and July has always attracted many participants with approximately 80 girls attending in April and over 120 in July, and I was out and about at different schools in our catchment area assisting coaches with their teams.

13 COACHING The following NNZ modules were run Starting out in Coaching Player Centred Coaching My Mini team and Me Communication and Managing others My team and me Skills Analysis We also ran Defence, Midcourt, and Shooting Sessions Skills and Drills session In 2011 a total of 80 Coaches completed NNZ Modules 25 attended defence, 14 attended attack, 26 attended midcourt, and 26 attended skills and drills.

BETTERIDGE ENGINEERING FUN FERNS I say every year that our Fun Ferns program grows bigger and bigger. NHV would not be able to run such a successful program without the many volunteers and coaches that contribute each year to its success. A huge thank you to Karen Bevan, Tyla Bevan, Janine Potts, Valley Fronds team of Kelsie Bevan, Holly Whitney, Justyce Harper Melissa Kainamu Karawana, Ake Isaia Hapimana, and many more helpers and parents who gave of their time willingly.

A very special Thank you must go to Ray and Tasi Betteridge from Betteridge Engineering. They have sponsored our Fun Ferns since we began many years ago. Each year they provide the bright yellow Fun Ferns Tee shirts which our young charges wear with pride. Their financial contribution enables us to provide coaching personnel and skill sessions all year round. Each season, sponsorship gets harder and harder to source so we at NHV know just how lucky we are to still have them on board. Thank you again.

VALLEY FRONDS It is my pleasure to announce that our Valley Fronds team came 1st in the Int 3A grade in the first round and first in Int 3 in the second round.

THANKS In conclusion I would like to thank Genny Jarvis and her Executive board for their outstanding support along with our highly motivated Centre Manager Phillipa Whitney. HV are the envy of all the other Centres in our Region and Phillipa always demonstrates a competency and professionalism which I believe has contributed greatly to our centres success. I would also like to acknowledge Tasi Betteridge for her leadership, guidance, support and friendship over the years. It was Tasi who first thought of bringing a Netball Development Officer on board in Hutt Valley and it was my pleasure to be rewarded with the role. Thank you.

Finally with the Region now entering a new netball phase and the responsibility for Netball Development in Hutt Valley being regionalized I would like to thank the coaches, players, parents, teachers and the many people I have come into contact with over the last 7 and half years. It has been a blast and so rewarding to work in the sport that I am so passionate about and to see the development of so many players and coaches come through our system. I wish you all well for the next exciting phase.

14 UMPIRES REPORT 2011

2011 has been a particularly successful year for the Hutt Valley Umpires. We’ve had a number of our Umpires progress to the next level with the help of their buddy’s and various Tournaments run during the Season.

For 2011 we have 52 Umpires registered with us with the following number in their respective badges: 3 Junior Badge ; 6 Intermediate Badge; 25 Centre Badge; 12 Regional Badge; 6 NZ Badge

Wendy Hynes had her Regional badge endorsed this season. Tai Pirato qualified for his Regional badge over Queens Birthday at the Wellington run annual tournament in Porirua and Buddy Nuku was also successful qualifying for his Regional badge early in February 2011.

Buddy was also successful in being selected for the Under 19 Talent ID Umpires squad last season and was selected to umpire a number of curtain raiser games for the Pulse early this year.

This year was particularly successful for Gareth Fowler who was again selected for the NZ A Squad and who also achieved his NZ A Badge. This was a great finish to Gareth’s 2011 season and was attained at the LFNC tournament. It’s great to see that the hard work and dedication put in by Gareth for this season has been particularly fruitful for him. We look forward to the coming seasons and the ongoing achievements we know will be on the cards for Gareth and a number of our up and coming umpires.

On the National Theory front, we had 8 Centre Umpires who sat and passed the NZ Regional Theory – they were: Linda Neylon (1 of 2 in NZ who gained 50/50), Richard Perkins (1 of 4 in NZ who gained 49.5/50), Diane Kakau, Jouvelle Gee, Teuila Sagaga, Lucy Gloag, Dionne Driscoll and Genevieve Coleman. 2 Regional Umpires - Buddy Nuku and Tai Pirato sat and passed their NZ Theory – all in all a very successful season.

Our Junior Whistlers was another successful programme run by Tasi Betteridge for the 2011 season, with the assistance of Lorraine Duffy, Vicky Regnaud, Cherie Jobe, Dawn Davis and Kaylene Macnee. It was well attended by a number of young enthusiastic up and coming umpires. We are very grateful for our volunteers who make this programme possible and dedicate their time and efforts in helping our young people strive to achieve their umpiring aspirations. There were a total of 28 junior whistlers who graduated by passing their NZ Centre Bank Theory for this season, and was great to see the eagerness and commitment shown by these umpires to attend the hour session early Saturday mornings.

In 2011 the Netball Hutt Valley Centre along with the Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Association introduced the criteria where every player wishing to play netball in the Netball Hutt Valley Centre competition had to attend an umpiring class. We held 49 classes which enabled 80 teams (approx 700 players) to play netball. A huge thanks to Gareth Fowler, Kylie Morgan, Cherie Jobe, Maureen Turley, Dawn Davis and Tasi Betteridge who along with myself took on the mammoth task of ensuring every player had the chance to fulfil the criteria. Whilst players were initially not happy with this criteria, the majority after attending a class were pleased they had attended as they gained a much better understanding of the rules. This was a great initiative which had positive outcomes for all involved. Thanks also go to Rick McMillen and Dawn Davis who ran the Level 1 Umpires sessions. This session was run throughout our season and is a requirement from NNZ for Umpires wishing to attain their Centre Badge.

It’s the volunteers that help us run our sports efficiently, their commitment, dedication and in some cases a lot of patience, these are skills shown by our Draw Steward, Mrs Betteridge who has the hard task of trying to take into account everybody’s commitments, coaching, playing & exam obligations

15 and still being able to roster them on to our weekly draw. This has proved very challenging most weeks, but with great organisational skills Tasi has been able to carry this out effectively and ensure that we get the umpires allocated to all our games.

The Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Prizegiving evening to which all were invited to attend a “royal” wedding with a difference was a resounding success. Attendees were resplendent in their finery where priests, bridesmaids, couples, mothers of the bride, a bride complete with wedding party all enjoyed an awesome evening while celebrating the successes of those who were rewarded for their commitment, hard work and diligence. Umpires awarded trophies for 2011 were:

Garvitch Rosebowl Most Promising Junior Umpire Janine Potroz Lorraine Duffy Trophy Most Promising Intermediate Umpire Erica Pope Marie Clementson Cup Most Promising Centre Umpire Genevieve Coleman Hare Trophy Individual Contribution to HVNUA Dawn Davis Driscoll Cup Most Valuable Contribution to HVNUA Cherie Jobe Newbolds Trophy Club Contribution to HVNUA Maidstone United Tasi Betteridge Cup Most Outstanding HV Umpire Tai Pirato Umpire of the Year Trophy Highest Achievement by a NZ Umpire Gareth Fowler

At the Netball Wellington Region Awards evening it was good to see a few of our umpires nominated for various categories, and in particular very rewarding to see Cherie Jobe winning the Centre Umpire of the Year Award. A great way to end our season.

Like any successful programme, it’s not left to chance. It’s always run by people who are selfless, devoted and committed to making it work. These attributes are what Hutt Valley has built its reputation on. Within the Region a number of centre’s have voiced their desire to have their centre’s run as effectively as Hutt Valley. It’s a great and friendly atmosphere and the fact that we have some nice comforts in the umpire’s room certainly helps foster that caring culture and has also assisted us in producing some outstanding umpires.

As this will be my last year serving as the Umpires President after 5 years, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Netball Hutt Valley Centre Board for their support and encouragement in our endeavour to promote, foster and develop netball in the Hutt Valley.

Last but not least I wish to thank my Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Committee. Without you all, we could not deliver all that we do as we strive to deliver excellent netball umpiring services to all levels of netball in the Hutt Valley and beyond.

Mary McCarthy President Hutt Valley Netball Umpires Association

16 NETBALL WELLINGTON REGION REPORT 2012

Another season has finished and looking back over the year we are amazed at what our people do and what they achieve every year and 2011 is no exception. A particular highlight of this year is having one of our very own coaches being appointed to our national team.

ACHIEVEMENTS & SUCCESSES – LOCAL & NATIONAL

Congratulations to Waimarama Taumaunu for her appointment to the role of head coach of the Silver Ferns. We remember giving Waimarama her Netball New Zealand Service Award in 2009 and she asked – what have I done to deserve this? It is not what you’ve done - it is what you are going to do we replied! She certainly went on to ‘earn’ this award as our regional High Performance programme successes can attest to, with many of our players and coaches earning national honours.

Congratulations twice over to Marianne Delaney for her appointment as Assistant Coach to the 2012 New Zealand Secondary Schools team and her most latest appointment to the Assistant Coach role for the 2012 Haier Pulse. Marianne has come through the ranks in the Regions coaching pathway and it is now a case of ‘watch the space’!!

This year has been a highlight for Susan Hare of Hutt Valley who has been recognised for all her hard work at Netball Hutt Valley Centre. Susan was awarded her Netball New Zealand Service Award at this year’s Netball New Zealand Annual General Meeting. Marian George, formerly of Auckland (now living in our Region) was also recognised for her contribution to netball with a Netball New Zealand Life Membership Award. Marian has done most of her coaching in North Shore and recently moved to Otaki to take up a teaching role.

Tasi Betteridge continues to raise the bar of netball volunteers. Tasi was a regional finalist at this year’s SPARC Volunteer Awards. Tasi has been a stalwart for the Netball Hutt Valley Centre for many years and her support for the local umpires has resulted in many of them being successful throughout the region. Her continued support and commitment to the Centre is outstanding.

Each year Wellington Airport joins forces with The Community Trust of Wellington (Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards) to recognise voluntary organisations in the community. The community awards are first held within the five councils-Kapiti, Porirua, Hutt City, Upper Hutt and Wellington City, and then the 5 winners attend the regional award ceremony at the Wellington Airport. Under the banner of Netball Wellington Region both Coastlands Netball Kapiti and Netball Hutt Valley won their respective Sports and Leisure categories and then went through to win the Sports and Leisure category of the 2011 Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards..

Silver Fern Katrina Grant was named the Te Kairanga Sportswoman of the Year at the 2011 Dominion Post Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards. Katrina’s performances at the Com- monwealth Games in Delhi and the World Netball Championships in Singapore this season make her a worthy recipient.

UMPIRES - Our umpires continue to lead the Region with their achievements - this year Cherie Jobe won the Ann Hay Trophy – Contribution to Umpiring for her hard work as a mentor of the Junior Whistlers programme and as a facilitator to the Netball Hutt Valley umpire classes.

17 Liz Boon continues to be our highest ranked umpire Liz as an ANZ Championship umpire and a member of the New Zealand Regional Practical Panel. Gareth Fowler was appointed reserve for the NZ U21 v Australia 21U game and named in the NNZ National Umpire A squad.

Our youngest, developing umpires Makere Hurst (Kapi Mana) and Buddy Nuku (Hutt Valley) were named in the New Zealand Development squad this season.

This year we saw Greg Barbet, Erin Lawer, Jessica Lea and Alicia Odering awarded their New Zealand Badge. Mike Gray, Jennifer Wray (Wellington), Tai Pirato, Buddy Nuku (Hutt Valley) were awarded their Regional Badge and Wendy Hynes her endorsement.

The New Zealand appointments for this year were: Alicia Odering, Jessica Lea, Holly Far, Erin Lawer (NZAGC U17), Jacqui Stewart and Paul Smith (NZAGC U19/U21), Gareth Fowler, Mary McCarthy and Paul Smith (LFNC) Mary McCarthy and Jessica Lea (NZSS).

Other umpire acknowledgements include the work of our Regional Practical Panels: Kylie Morgan, Mary McCarthy (Hutt Valley), Paul Smith, Sarah Littler, Kelly Herbert (Wellington), and Anthony Karauria (Kapi Mana). Also to the Regional NZ Practical Panel members: Jacqui Stewart, Sue Geale, Pauline Sciascia, Gareth Fowler and Liz Boon for all their hard work through out the year. Thanks also Kelly Herbert for her continued work as a Regional Theory Moderator and Kirsten Lloyd & Kelly’s work on the New Zealand Umpire Panels.

BENCH OFFICIALS & STATISTICIANS - The Bench Officials & Statisticians are another group of volunteers who continue to succeed at all levels. This is largely due to the commitment from Bernice Robertson and Sue George who recruit, train and encourage this group to achieve high standards in all the roles of a Bench Official. Not only have they worked hard locally for our Regional Super League (RSL) competition they have also been appointed to national and international competitions and events.

For their hard work and dedication to the RSL competition we thank the following ‘Benchies’ for their time: Sue George, Bernice Robertson, Sam Kerins, Kora Pene, Cathy Edmonds, Suzanne Edwards, Wendy Colledge, Janice Coldicott, John Neho, Greg Barbet and Maryanne Stewart.

Other Bench Official appointments for the year were Bernice Robertson to NZAGC U19/U21. Bernice Robertson, Sue George, Cathy Edmonds, Suzanne Edwards, Kora Pene and Sam Kerins to LFNC Finals week and Greg Barbet and John Neho to NZSS.

We congratulate Bernice Robertson and Sam Kerins for their appointment to the World Netball Championships in Singapore this year.

NWR U19 TEAM - The NWR U19 team was an impressive bunch of young women, finishing runners-up at this year’s national tournament, under head coach, Sue Bentley and assistant coach (former Silver Fern), Sharon Gold and new manager Kelly Newbold. Nicola Mackle, Emma Weenink, Olivia Dunn were named in U19 Tournament Team.

NWR U21 TEAM - NWR U21 team placed 7th at NZAGC U19/U21 Tournament. The team were very dedicated and under the guidance of head coach Lynette Imrie, Jay Farris (assistant coach) and Lisa Collier (manager) this season and thank them for time and all the hard work. We will be looking forward to the development of this team over the next couple of seasons.

18 PAKN’SAVE NPC 1 TEAM - Pakn’Save NPC 1 finished in 4thplace 1st Grade, Division 1

This season Pakn’Save NPC team went consistently in the Lion Foundation lead up games going through unbeaten. The test for the team was the last three games – we have been there before. Canterbury was our undoing and we went down 44-48 in the last game of the round robin. We were then in the first semi final (2vs3) and losing to Otago 45-57 and played on for 3rd or 4th spot losing to Bay of Plenty 42-53. We finished the tournament fourth overall. Nicola Mackle was named in the New Zealand U21 team for 2011/12 season. Our thanks to players and to the management team of Gail Parata, Marianne Delaney, Helen Markham and Jo Holmes. Thank you also to the assistance of physio Jessica Condliffe and our video analyst – Lindsay Murdoch. And to Hugh Biss and Stephen Hotter and the Massey University sport science students for their fitness and conditioning sessions for the player’s program

NWR EVENTS LOCAL LOIS MUIR CHALLENGE – The Cook Strait team was placed 5th in the Lois Muir Challenge this year. The team was a combination of youth and experience and under the guidance of Barbara Webster and Ann Hay. Players represented from Netball Hutt Valley were: Rachel Savelio, Alicia Colledge, Lisa Scott and Kelsey Albrechtsen.

PAK’NSAVE REGIONAL SUPERLEAGUE - In Division 1the PIC 2 team went through to win the title defeating hot favourites Wellington East. PIC 2 had come from behind when they knocked out their top team – PIC 1 in the semi-finals. Jezrae Te Runa Morehu won Best Shooter and Most Valuable Player.

The other highlight was Rimutaka who won the Division 2 title this season. The team has been a consistent performer over the years. They beat St Catherine Old Girls in the final. Rimutaka’s Kathleen Beckett won the Best Shooter and Most Valuable Player.

NWR EVENTS NATIONAL Wellington has been extremely lucky this year as not only have we seen some great netball from our local players but we have also been able to see some outstanding netball played by national and international players. We would like to thank Netball New Zealand for the opportunity to host the following events.

TRANS-TASMAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS TOURNAMENT – is held bi-annually in New Zealand and took place this year from 31st May – 2nd June at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua. It was an exciting week with all six teams arriving in early, spending the weekend in training and playing practice games against local teams. This gave some wonderful opportunities for our local players and umpires who played and officiated, some more than once over a hectic couple of days with the Australian Secondary Schools team ultimately claiming the title.

NEW ZEALAND U21 V AUSTRALIA 21U TEST MATCH Te Rauparaha arena on Tuesday 7th June - No rest for the wicked as we immediately turned around and hosted the New Zealand U21 and Australian 21U teams in their first of three test matches being played around New Zealand. For an event that had very little marketing it was great to see such a huge turnout of spectators.

LION FOUNDATION NATIONAL CHAMPS – ROUND ROBIN – Te Rauparaha Arena on Sunday 11th September. After an eight week break it was a bit hard to get back into the ‘event mode’. It was great see our NWR Pakn’Save NPC 1 team in action against Otago and great support from the Wellington netball community.

19 LION FOUNDATION NATIONAL CHAMPS – FINALS WEEK – Te Rauparaha arena on 28th – 30th September. Twelve teams over two divisions competed hard and relentlessly over the three days. The championship was out rightly won by Canterbury for the second consecutive year. The Pakn’Save NPC team was placed fourth overall.

EVENT VOLUNTEERS – Many thanks to the numerous volunteers who gave their time freely and worked extremely hard to ensure that all the events that NWR hosted ran smoothly and successfully. We had great feedback from NNZ, teams and umpires and complimented for our smiling and friendly attitudes, our helpful manner

OTHER ITEMS OF NOTE

ASB SPORTS CENTRE - After 12 years from a number of people the ASB Sports Centre has finally come to fruition in July this year. The past movers and shakers of Netball Wellington including Sue Ryall, Mary Haggie and Paulette O’Reilly and the endless reviews by Wellington City Council over the years and the support of clubs, schools and colleges to finally have an indoor venue for netball has been fulfilled. The twelve new courts will ensure Saturday netball will be free of wind, and sleet for players, umpires and spectators. This is a new and exciting time for the development and delivery of netball in our region.

ON THE MOVE – In October after 15 years of being based at the Sport Wellington offices, the Region office moved to ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie, the transition has begun as the Centres, Region and the Pulse blend in to one entity. The open plan office space is welcoming and hopes to see many of you pop in and see us all. A very enjoyable and successful season: 12 games, 8 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses with 8 of our 12 games against ‘A’ teams. Our mid-courters were dynamic, agile and creative. Our defence were tenacious, determined and aggressive. Our shooters were focused, reliable and innovative. Our strengths were in our ability to work as a team and our perseverance to keep striving for improvement each time we took the court. We were well supported by a dedicated group of parents, friends and family. Our team: Midcourters: Jasmyn Pamatatau (captain), Ashlee Curtis, Nicola Wheeler, Brianna Ralston and Shanara Wallace. Defence: Georgia Somerville, Thilini Dissanyake and Abbey Russell. Shooters: Tamara Warmerdam, Lydia Hunwick and TeKiriahi Weston. Coach: Tash Rowlands. Manager: Raewyn Curtis. Tash Rowlands (Coach)

22 Year 8 Gold Team 2011 I felt there was a lot of depth in the Y8 players selected to trial for Hutt Valley this year which made the final selections for the team very difficult, resulting in a strong core of players from 2010 and 3 new comers to the team. We had a solid build up to the first Regional Tournament held at Haitaitai but unfortunately on the day could only field a team of 8 due to sickness and injuries. We started with a hard fought win by 1 against Kapiti, a comfortable win against Wellington West and a loss by 8 to Kapi-Mana with some very tired players.

At the Hastings tournament, we progressed through the pool matches to the semi-finals against Hastings who won 13-10. This was one of our better games of the day however felt we could not lift when under pressure. We came 3rd overall after a win against the Hutt Valley Y8 development team.

At the 2nd phase of the Wellington Regional tournament we needed to win all 3 matches to make the final play offs. With 2 good wins under our belts against Motu Kairangi Gold & Dev we took the court against Norths who also required the win to make the finals to be held in Kilbirnie. This was a great match, excellent netball displayed by both teams (offensively & defensively) with 1 goal between the teams until the final quarter where we lifted the work rate and pulled away to a 24 – 20 win and a place in the Finals.

What a great opportunity & experience for the girls to play at the Kilbirnie Sports centre. It was always going to be a tough match having come 2nd in the 2010 Regional tournament to Kapi Mana. We trailed by 2 goals at the first ¼ but built from there to take the lead by 1 at ½ time and a very strong final ¼ to give us a 28 – 19 win. An all round excellent performance by all, the defensive line up created numerous opportunities which were capitalised on with our 3 shooters statistics averaging @ 77% versus 54% for Kapi Mana.

I think the format for the Wellington Regional’s where the top two teams play a final is an excellent one and I hope it is used again next year. Mornain King (Coach) / Fiona Isaacs (Manager)

Year 7 Gold Team 2011 Gold team players were: Honestly Watene, Marjorie Cashell, Alani Faaeteete, Taumaia Schuster, Brylea Patterson, Denva Shaw-Tait, Aicha Ahloo, Terrelle Onesemo, Justyce Harper and Waitangi Ratu-James and super sub Valerie Taito

My manager was Melanie Faaeteete and I would like to thank her for helping me, the team and the parents ensuring that all ran smoothly at our tournaments.

This season Year 7 gold team participated in 2 tournaments – the Wellington Combined Primary tournament held over 2 days in Hataitai & Kapiti followed by Regional final between the top 2 teams in our grade in the new indoor stadium in town and an overnight trip to Hastings.

On the first day held at Hataitai we had 2 big wins followed by a very close win by 1goal. It was good to see the girls working well as a team unit although we hadn’t had many practices at that stage. Quite a few of the team could play multiple positions – defence and attack.

The overnight trip to Hastings is the highlight of the netball rep season. On the Sunday we played a total of 6 games - 3 rounds then section crossovers, semis & finals. We had some close games. Against Hastings we won 10-8. 2nd game vs. Invitational team won 27-3. Central Hawkes Bay won

23 16-14. Hutt Valley Development Won 12-3. Semis – vs. Central Hawkes Bay – Won 11-2, this was completely different to our first game against them. We came out firing. In the final we met Gisborne winning 16-6. This was a great game and a fantastic team effort by all. I was extremely pleased with how well the team played in all of their games and they did very well to win the Year 7 Section.

The 2nd Primary Tournament day was held at Kapiti. Due to an illness to one of our players, we did go into this tournament with points taken off for not fielding 10 players on the first day. I also had an injury but this time received a player from the development team to ensure we met the criteria and fielded 10 players. To make the top 2 we had to win all games. Our first game was against Motu Kairangi – Won 22-17. 2nd Motu Kairangi Development team won 45-8. Our last was the most nerve racking on the side line for the supporters and we ended up winning 23-22. We ended up coming in 2nd place. On Sunday 21 August we played in the new stadium in Wellington against Kapi-Mana. We started poorly but with a few key changes we made up ground in the 2nd quarter. It was close but the team just couldn’t go the extra mile for a win. They all played really well and well done to Kapi Mana for coming out on top to win 31-27.

Overall I was really pleased with the team and they have been a pleasure to coach. I will look forward to seeing their progress in 2012.

GOLDEN OLDIES DAY by Lorraine Duffy Friendships and many old memories were recalled on Saturday 27 August while celebrating Golden Oldies and Finals Day. We were once again invited to be a part of the umpires group who treated us like royalty, serving us a most enjoyable luncheon and then attending to our every need while we to watched two entertaining games of finals netball. The umpires, looking very efficient dressed in their while tracksuits also hosted us during the games. Netball Hutt Valley must be proud of you all and it shows just how capable you all are both on and off the court. Many thanks to the Executive, Phillipa and Umpires for inviting us to enjoy another grand reunion.

34 Valley nets top awards By Yvonne Airey

Cherie Jobe Sue Bentley

It was all about all-round excellence in the sport of netball.

Hutt Valley featured in top contributions to netball in all its facets when the cream of netball talent was acknowledged at the Netball Wellington Regional Awards Night on October 14 at the Petone Working Men’s Club.

Cherie Jobe took the Ann Hay Cup for her contribution to umpiring. Cherie has been a mainstay this year in running the Junior Whistlers Programme at Hutt Valley to train young umpires a programme which has resulted in many talented youngsters progressing to the top echelons of netball umpiring.

She is also a member of the NHV Umpires’ Association and supports others at centre and regional levels, as well as umpiring herself.

NWR’s highest ranking umpire, Liz Boon, who operates from the Wellington Centre, was voted umpire of the year but was not present to receive her award.

Bench official of the year was HV’s Bernice Robertson, who has officiated at the World Netball championship in Singapore, the Commonwealth Games last year in Delhi and at national, provincial and centre level during the past season.

In the supreme awards, HV’s Sue Bentley took out the Coach of the Year Award. She was the coach of the under-19 Wellington regional team which was runner-up this year in the under-19 Netball New Zealand national tournament at Nelson.

Lynette Imrie and Jay Farris (HV) were acknowledged as coaches of the under-21 team and in the Supreme Awards, Naenae Collegians United, shooter Alicia College received two nominations - for her play in the Cook Strait team and the under-21 team.

36 NNZ Service Award By Yvonne Airey

Sue Hare with Dame Lois Muir

More than 25 years of service in netball administration for Hutt Valley has seen Sue Hare recognised by Netball New Zealand with a highly-coveted NNZ Service Award. Sue is currently the Netball Hutt Valley Treasurer, a position she first took on in 1992 and then again from 2000 to the present. Throughout the season she also serves as the Saturday Office Administrator helping with registrations and every enquiry you can imagine, ensuring the full programme of games goes smoothly for the hundreds of girls and women who turn up each week to play at the Taita Courts. She has already been honoured by her local centre with a Hutt Valley Service Award in 2002 and more recently life membership (2007) and a Netball Wellington Region life membership in 2010. Her early association with netball was a foundation member of the Stokes Valley Kowhai Netball Club. She joined Hutt Valley’s Midweek Committee in 1984 and when Twilight Netball was introduced in 1987 she became a member of that committee as well. Umpiring was added to the list in that year too and two years later she was treasurer of the Umpires Association, a position she held for four seasons. It was in 1991 as umpire’s delegate she first joined the executive of Netball Hutt Valley. She has also filled the roles of draw steward for the Umpires’ Association, fixtures secretary and organiser of representative honours and award badges. She regularly attends NNZ Council meetings enjoying particularly meeting with other netball volunteers from around the country. Other New Zealand Service Award winners from Hutt Valley have included current HV Centre patron Lorraine Duffy (1974) and Marg Pierson (1974), Annette Taylor (1975) and Joanne Paora, the current HV Centre development officer (2004). Having such long-serving volunteers as these is what makes Hutt Valley netball the successful centre it is today.

37 Duffy dynasty reigns in Hutt netball By Yvonne Airey

When Caitlyn Duffy took to the court for Naenae Collegians United for the first game of the Premier 1 2011 season she carried with her the mantle of a long-serving Hutt Valley sporting dynasty. Sitting on the sideline was her grandmother Lorraine Duffy, now patron of the Netball Hutt Valley Centre, who began her own netball career more than six decades before. Caitlyn, now 19 and at university played for the top Sacred Heart netball team throughout her college years and enters Premier 1 at a time when attractive uniforms and inside play are the order of the day; Lorraine began her playing years at Sacred Heart College when the sport was called basketball and they wore serge tunics and long stockings, which didn’t last long when you fell on the hard outdoor surfaces. Mrs Duffy recalls the highlight of the season then was the game against rival Wellington Catholic college St Mary’s - “a huge outing in those days that included a train trip into the capital and a walk to the school”. These days the whole world is your netball court. In 1949 Mrs Duffy joined Convent Old Girls and after a year as a player took up umpiring. In those days each team had to provide their own umpire; she tried it and liked it, and the rest is history; she rose to become a New Zealand tournament umpire, whistling at 19 annual tournaments and is the recipient of an international umpires badge. In 2008 she was presented with a Lifetime Contribution to Sport Award at the Wellington Sportsperson of the Year, having served in just about every position in local netball from playing, coaching and umpiring to administration, and is a life member of both Netball Hutt Valley and Netball Wellington Region. National recognition includes a service award (1974) and locally, a Lower Hutt City Council civic award (1976). She was a member of the committee responsible for building the netball courts and pavilion at Taita and was involved in the planning which led to six extra courts in 1985. Her volunteer involvement was strongly supported by late husband Colin, particularly when family Lynda, Kay and Grahame came along - “they virtually grew up on the Taita netball courts” - and the netball dynasty started to grow. Lynda’s daughters Andrea and Stephanie took an interest, Andrea becoming an umpire; Kay’s daughters Lauren and Kirsten and Grahame’s daughters Haley and Caitlyn played too, although many locals will recognise the names more as top water polo participants. Grandchildren Lauren, Kirsten and brother Bradley (also a rugby referee) and Hayley, Caitlyn, Joel and Micaela have all competed with outstanding success, while son Grahame Duffy has just retired as the long-time coach of the highly-successful Sacred Heart College teams. And with Mrs Duffy’s two great-grandchildren born recently, the sporting dynasty is not ended yet. Meantime every Saturday during the playing season you’ll find Mrs Duffy encouraging the umpires and helping out with the weekly organization in the nerve centre.

38 Fans add splash of character By May Chen (Singapore)

FANS have proved to be the life of the party at the World Netball Championship (WNC) living it up at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, showing up in their team colours and with props and costumes.

This trip to Singapore has been the culmination of six months of planning for the Kiwi Ferns, a 22 strong group from Hutt Valley in the Wellington region.

The topic at each monthly meeting had centred on what to wear and how to be heard, ringleader Joanne Paora told The Straits Times in between chants of “ole, ole”.

The boisterous group have livened up the atmosphere by chanting during breaks - although they have been “advised” several times by security officers to keep the noise down.

The ferns arranged different outfits for each day of the eight –day competition. It will be time to bring out the wigs today but the group - like many other fans are saving their best for the business end of the competition.

“You will want to stick with us on the last day - that is when it will be the most outrageous”, quipped Paora, who said their supporters were aged between 21 and 66 years.

She said dressing up and having fun complete the fans’ experience and keep the group entertained.

Having watched the Silver Ferns hammer Wales 91-21, Paora said: “look at the score. This makes it fun, or it’ll just be boring and we’ll all want to go home.”

For others, it is simply a good way to get noticed - both by the players they support and by family and friends watching at home.

39 Start date for stadium By Nicholas Boyack The Walter Nash Stadium upgrade has reached a significant milestone, with a council officer suggesting a definite date to begin the $12 million project. The upgrade has been on the books for more than a decade without any real progress being made. Recently the city council, which has budgeted $4 million for the project in 2012-13, agreed to set up the Community Facilities Trust to help raise the remaining $8m. Trustees include city councilor and rugby league identity Ken Laban, and former All Black captain Andy Leslie. The proposed refurbishment will create three new indoor netball courts but will not include the seating necessary to host professional netball or basketball. Although the project started as a stadium refurbishment, it now includes a range of community facilities, including a new library and a gym. Former stadium trustees Cedric Cudby and Allan Webb lobbied the city development committee to reject the proposal. The pair criticized the design and the absence of seating that would enable the council to attract teams like the Pulse netball franchise and get a financial return from the stadium. Mr Cudby accused the council of “dithering” and expressed frustration at the lack of progress. He urged the committee to go ‘back to square one’ and build a stadium with seating and a mezzanine floor for viewing. Leisure Active manager Marcus Sherwood said the project has been talked about for more than 12 years. The council has consulted a wide range of sporting bodies on the design and it has met with approval. The suggested seating would add to the cost and he doubted that professional teams would use it. The council has budgeted $4m and with the creation of a trust to raise the remaining money, he is now working towards a starting day of December 2012. The stadium will be a significant community asset that will bring much needed vibrancy to Taita, he said. Councillor Roger Styles welcomed the proposed date and said Mayor Ray Wallace was looking forward to turning the first soil. This is actually a positive outcome for the city. Ever since I was first on council, 13 years ago, this has been talked about.” The project has changed from a sporting facility to the creation of a community asset that will benefit the entire city. He expressed pleasure that it has been endorsed by sporting organizations and said that if the council listened to Mr Cudby, they will still be talking about the design in 4 years time. The project is now officially called the Taita Centre Project. When completed it will include the Walter Nash Stadium, Taita Community Hall, Taita Community Library and Hutt Valley Netball courts.
