The following is a list of schools led by Teach For America alumni in the D.C. Region and schools with which TFA has a strong partnership, as indicated by the name. The list is not complete but instead reflects schools whose leaders have expressed a strong interest in seeking alumni applications for open teaching and instructional leadership positions.

Elementary Schools

Claremont Immersion Elementary School Alumni Led Ÿ PK-5 Ÿ Arlington, VA Ÿ District

Claremont Immersion Elementary School is a learning community where doors are opened and minds are immersed in the richness of learning in two languages, English and Spanish. In Claremont’s kindergarten through grade five dual language immersion program, children learn a second language in a natural way through everyday conversation and content instruction. Students spend half of their day in a Spanish-language classroom learning math, Spanish reading/writing, science and music or art, and the other portion of the day learning reading, writing, social studies, physical education and music or art in English. This learning environment develops fluency in two languages and fosters caring, respectful and supportive cross-cultural relationships.

DC Scholars Stanton Elementary Alumni Led Ÿ PK-5 Ÿ Washington, DC Ÿ District

In 2010 DCPS partnered with Scholar Academies, a non-profit school management organization, to turn around Stanton Elementary School. As a DCPS Turnaround Partnership School, the new DC Scholars Stanton Elementary is working to become one of DC’s highest performing schools. It is a college-focused elementary school where student achievement is celebrated and every team member is committed to ensuring student success. The foundation of DC Scholars Stanton Elementary is rooted in a deep belief that all students can succeed when placed in a highly effective, well managed school environment. Tubman Elementary School is the highest achieving DCPS elementary school in Ward 1. From 2007–13, Tubman students had a growth of 54% in math and nearly 30% in reading. We offer a comprehensive and rigorous academic program serving the needs of all learners. We have a rich math and literacy program and also include rigorous science instruction with a science specialist and a wide array of specials where all students take Spanish, art, music and PE. We have a full-time librarian to support ongoing literacy. The academic program at Hyde-Addison is driven by the District of Columbia Public School Standards in each of the content areas. The instructional content as delivered in the classroom is differentiated and rigorous and is grounded in the use of the Responsive Classroom Philosophy. Core instruction in literacy is delivered using a Reading and Writing Workshop Model. The core mathematics curriculum is based on the Common Core Standards and is supported by resources from Everyday Mathematics, Third Edition. Social Studies and Science instruction are project-based. Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School is an Expeditionary Learning School and the District of Columbia’s first school dedicated to education for sustainability and biliteracy. Thomas Stone Elementary prepares students from diverse backgrounds to succeed in college and career by empowering them to build a strong character, achieve excellence, think critically and creatively, and interact sensibly and responsibly with the world around them. Serving about eight hundred students in grades Head Start through 6th, our school is located in the diverse community of Mount Rainier, . Thomas Stone is a diverse, multi-cultural neighborhood school, where the entire student population walks to and from school. School buses are provided for the 85 students that participate in the school’s Comprehensive Special Education Program (CSEP). One hundred two students are serviced through our Special Education Department, three hundred students are English Language Learners (ELL), and over twenty students participate in our Talented and Gifted pull-out program. Thomas Stone Elementary is a Title 1 school with over ninety percent of the student population receiving free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. Our staff consists of 100% highly qualified teachers and paraprofessionals with experiences ranging from 1 year to over 30 years. Tilden Middle School Alumni Led Ÿ 6-8 Ÿ Rockville, MD Ÿ District

During the 2001-2002 school year, the Tilden community studied the Baldrige Education Criteria for Performance Excellence in order to utilize this system for school-wide planning, including the writing of the School Improvement Plan. The staff, with parent input, collaboratively studied the 2001-2002 plan in preparation for the writing of the 2002-2003 plan. The 2002-2003 School Improvement Plan, team plans 6 and department plans were written in the Baldrige Integrated Management System format, utilizing the current functional test results, CAT results and MCPS target goals. The school-wide focus is on grade level stance question responses with team scoring, team interpretation of data and school-wide display of data. Our goal is for all teams, departments, teachers, and students to write their own improvement plans in the Baldrige Integrated Management System format during the 2003-2004 school year.

High Schools

Academies at Anacostia Partnership Ÿ 9-12 Ÿ Washington, DC Ÿ District

Anacostia High School underwent an academic restructuring in 2009–10 that resulted in the creation of four distinct learning academies that are now divided by grade level, within the greater Anacostia body. To provide students personalized, comprehensive instruction and greater individual support, each learning academy is equipped with its own administrator (Principal or Assistant Principal), dean, counselor, staff and teachers. All Anacostia students have the opportunity to enroll in Advanced Placement courses. In addition, beginning in the fall of 2011, students will have the opportunity to enroll in one of two career pathway programs: an Allied Health and certificate program in Emergency Management Technician (EMT), as well as a program in Homeland Security and Law Enforcement. Anacostia is in its final stage of a complete modernization, which includes a fully updated building with state-of-the-art science and computer labs.

Cesar Chavez Public Charter School-Capitol Hill Campus Partnership Ÿ 9-12 Ÿ Washington, DC Ÿ Charter

The Chavez Schools' mission is to prepare scholars to succeed in competitive colleges and to empower them to use public policy to create a more just, free, and equal world. Our vision is that all Chavez alumni have college degrees and lead lives of personal achievement and productive engagement in local and national public policy challenges. Further, Chavez scholars are sought out by elected officials, civic leaders, community organizers and the media when they are seeking student voices on public policy issues. Thurgood Marshall Academy Alumni Led Ÿ 9-12 Ÿ Washington, DC Ÿ Charter

Thurgood Marshall Academy is a college-preparatory public charter high school located in ward 8’s historic Anacostia neighborhood. The school upholds Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall’s legacy of equal opportunity through our commitment to providing an excellent education for all students. Opened in 2001, Thurgood Marshall Academy prepares students to succeed in college and instills in students an understanding of democracy and advocacy for themselves and for others through a law themed curricular program. Thurgood Marshall Academy serves nearly 400 students, over 90% of whom live in Wards 7 and 8. The education students receive at Thurgood Marshall Academy extends far beyond the classroom. Enrichment opportunities include tutoring and law- based programs at the District’s leading law firms, recreational and educational activities with adult mentors, engaging afterschool programs and service projects to improve our local community. 7

Thurgood Marshall has the highest Median Growth Percentile—a measure of students’ academic gains—in math and reading in DC and for the past three years, our students’ scores on DC city-wide standardized tests were amongst the highest in the city for all non-selective high schools. AppleTree Early Learning Public Charter School (AELPCS) is a public charter school authorized by the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board open to all three- and four-year olds in the District of Columbia. AELPCS’s mission is to provide young children with the social, emotional, and cognitive foundations that will enable them to succeed in school. AELPCS implements a research-based instructional program that supports the development of young children’s language, literacy, and behavioral skills as well as their understanding of the world around them. Columbia Heights Education Campus Partnership Ÿ 6-12 Ÿ Washington, DC Ÿ District

Columbia Heights Educational Campus is a unique globally themed bilingual campus that serves grades 6 through 12 and prepares all of its students for success in college and the careers. CHEC has been recognized as one of the top schools in the area and country on the Advanced Placement Challenge Index for offering Advanced Placement to all students. It also has the only Spanish language dual immersion high school program in Washington, DC. Students can take a full bilingual program through the 12th grade. In 2013, CHEC was selected by Fight For Children as the winner of the Quality Schools Initiative Award for innovation in education. CHEC students come from over 20 countries and we use this diversity to complement our globally themed curriculum. Every grade explores a global theme, which ties together their learning and builds their global awareness.

Beginning in middle school, all students become articulate communicators in English and Spanish through our dual language immersion program. The middle school also develops the students' full potential through music and visual art for all students. In the eighth grade, students can transition early to high school by taking high school courses for credit, and in high school as early as the ninth grade, students can take college courses for both high school and college credit through our early college program. Once in high school, students can choose one of two career paths, Math, Science and Business, or Multilingual Communication and the Arts. In addition to Spanish, students can take French, Italian, or Arabic. Students are engaged in exploration and inquiry through our project based learning and portfolio assessment process. All students collect their work for all classes and present it to their classmates, teachers and parents in a portfolio presentation process. CHEC has a full athletic program at both the middle school and high school level with a variety of sports for boys and girls. In addition to athletics, there are numerous clubs and extracurricular activities. CHEC offers a globally themed after school program which includes both academics and enrichment. We are also a Flamboyan Parent Partnership School and conduct home visits for all parents who wish to participate.

DC Prep Alumni Led Ÿ PK-3 Ÿ Washington, DC Ÿ Charter

DC Prep is committed to improving public education in the nation’s capital and helping to turn one of the lowest-performing public school districts in the nation, into one of the best. In its first decade, DC Prep has shown what can be done.
