TIN-ACT Workshop 4 at University of (UoN) Hearing Sciences, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD UK

This pack should provide you with enough information to get you to and from the various activities relating to the TINACT training workshop at UoN. If you have any questions, please direct them to Maryam Shabbir ([email protected]) or Anissa Ramadhani ([email protected]).

General Information:

The University Park campus of University of Nottingham is about 40mins walk from the city centre, and very large (over 120 hectares), mostly made up of parkland and landscaped gardens and it can take 15- 30mins to walk from one side to the other. It is well-served by public transport and there are amenities on- site.

Venue:

The venue is Hearing Sciences (building number 40- see University Park map provided), formerly known as MRC Institute of Hearing Research (still identified on Google maps as MRC https://goo.gl/maps/qyMg9v5fMFfs8xWJA). The building is access controlled but someone will be around at the reception to let you in from 08:30 in the morning. We are booked into the seminar room which has an adjacent ante-room where lunch and break-time coffee will be served. You can see a map of the ground floor of the building at the following link (the room we will be in is on the far left): https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/estates/documents/accessplans/1401aa.pdf

Airports:

The University of Nottingham is only a few hours by public transport from many major airports in the UK:

1) (EMA) 0.5hrs 2) Birmingham (BHX) 1.5hrs 3) London Luton (LTN) 1.75hrs 4) Doncaster-Sheffield (DSA) 2hrs 5) Manchester (MAN) 2.25hrs 6) Leeds-Bradford (LBA) 2.5hrs 7) London City (LCY) 2.5hrs 8) London Gatwick (GTW) 3hrs 9) London Heathrow (HTR) 3hrs 10) London Stansted (STN) 3hrs 11) London Southend (SEN) 4hrs

Public Transport:

Please note that we have multiple transport service providers so each mode of transportation may have their own service provider thus their own tickets. Buses in Nottingham are generally operated by two different companies, Trentbarton (https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/) and Nottingham City Transport (NCT; https://www.nctx.co.uk/). It is generally more expensive to buy a ticket valid on both company’s buses than a ticket valid on just one company’s bus. Trentbarton travel outside the area whereas NCT are just in Nottingham and environs. Be aware that Trentbarton and all machines will give change but NCT drivers cannot give change so you will need the exact fare if purchasing tickets on the bus (cash only).

1) Tram only pass: Purchase from the ticketing machine at tram stop • 7 days adult pass - £18 2) Nottingham City Transport buses: Download app to purchase tickets in advance (https://www.nctx.co.uk/app) or pay in cash on the bus. Prices quoted below are from the app. • 24 hours pass - £4.20 • 5-day pass - £18 (120 hours from activation) • 5 x 24-hour bundle - £18.90 (can activate each 24-hour pass when you want) 3) Trentbarton buses: Purchase on the bus, fare varies depending on drop-off point • Saver 7 might work best if you need a 7-day pass https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/fares-and- tickets/saver (please check zones before purchasing) Also unlikely you will be using Trentbarton buses on a daily basis if you are staying at any of the recommended hotels)

Travelling to Nottingham City Centre from EMA: The Nottingham bus from provided by Trentbarton goes to Nottingham. Tickets can be purchased on the bus, but fare varies depending on drop-off point. Please use this link to check fare https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/fares-and-tickets/choosing-the-right-ticket. Please note that there are two types of Skylink buses (express and normal), so please do check which one goes to your destination (see following link for the Skylink schedule https://www.trentbarton.co.uk/services/skylinkexpress). Alternatively, you could also go by train directly from East Midlands Parkway.

Travelling from Nottingham City Centre to the venue: The tram (towards Lane) also stops at Queens Medical Centre (QMC tram stop) and the South entrance of campus (University of Nottingham tram stop). For the tram, you must buy a ticket before you board (there are machines at all stops). Both stops are equidistant from the meeting point (but the QMC tram stop comes first, then University of Nottingham). Both are roughly a 6min walk from the meeting point. Various Trentbarton buses come to the University Park campus while only Orange line NCT buses bring you to the University Park campus.

Travelling from Birmingham and other airports to Nottingham: The best way to get around the UK is by coach or train. Coach is generally cheaper, but train is more comfortable and quicker. You can arrive at Nottingham (city centre) or Beeston, although it’s a walk to the tram interchange at Beeston. Coaches often travel past Nottingham University so you can get off without having to pay for another bus/tram fare but be careful not to get off at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton Campus.

If you are traveling from London, make sure you check first. While these will only give you tickets from the Victoria Bus Station or London St. Pancras (train) station to Nottingham leg of your journey, they are often incredibly cheap https://uk.megabus.com/ Otherwise, I recommend East Midlands Trains for all your train ticket needs https://www.eastmidlandstrains.co.uk/ For coach travel not operated by Megabus, check out National Express: https://www.nationalexpress.com/en Hotel Recommendations:
