I love the Olympics. The world comes together united in a love of sports. Outstanding achievements, national pride, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. And despite the scary bits - the doping allegations, the muggings, robberies and the ticket scalping scandals - South America’s first ever Olympics has been hailed a success. But this year, the Australian team brings home the lowest medal haul ever: $11 million per medal funded by the Australian tax payer was the last estimate we heard. A total of $340 million was assigned to our team via ASC’s Winning Edge program “money has been distributed with an enhanced priority on winning and sports in which has historically been strong” they said. We funded a 422 member team to go to Rio but many of our anticipated results just weren’t there: Swimming received $37.9 m, 3 gold medals Rowing $32.4m one gold Sailing $29m one gold Cycling $34.1m none (1 silver and 1 bronze) Modern Pentathlon $200,000 – Chloe Esposito achieved gold, but the athlete had to fund herself to live overseas for 2 years to get the international exposure to competition that lead to her success

John Coates AOC President, (who has received $7.05million in consulting fees and allowances since 2000), said that he would step down from a review of the model after Rio. “We think they clearly need to look at the [funding] model and the system behind the model … There has got to be a greater spread of funding. There are sports out there that are doing it tough now.” Source: The Guardian, Paul Connolly

So, how does this concern us – and how has this effected our great sport of motorbike racing? Australia currently has the most successful ever 6 day international enduro team but all of our disciplines had to suffer significant cuts from the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) – cuts to Enduro, Trials, Motocross and Speedway to the tune of $300,000. So from a previous budget of $400k our sport was reduced to $100k of Federal funding, leaving MA with no dedicated staff member for international teams meaning teams have to make their own arrangements – and seek significant funds to represent their country.

As a comparison to Olympic team funding, it has previously cost $60k to send teams to Trial des Nations, $55k to send teams to World Juniors MX, $60k for the Australian speedway team. Late last year spokeswoman for Motorcycling Australia, Misty Walton, said the organisation would still be supporting the team. "Previously the arrangement has been that Motorcycling Australia would send international teams for international competitions on a fully funded ticket," she said.

"So whilst this year the funding has been scaled-back, we've been very lucky that we have some funding available that we have committed equally to a number of different international teams.

2

"Whilst we can't fully fund all of them to go overseas this year, we're going to throw as much as we can at them to ensure that they're there to defend their titles, or just to represent their country.

"We've had a lot of meetings with team managers to really give our support where we can and guide them in certain ways so that they can raise money or go out fundraising."

Now costs for travelling teams have to be met from MA general revenue and, of course, fund raising by our riders. We can easily conclude that for just a fraction of the funding thrown at unsuccessful Olympic medal hopefuls, we could have been seeing a drastic improvement and achievement in our sport and successes overseas. Here’s how our teams are coping:

ISDE in In the 2015 International Six Day Enduro we were World Champions, with a sweep of the Senior, Junior and Women Trophies. And now – there is a crowd funding page just to get us to Spain this year with $2500 raised of the $50k goal for the ISDE – MA’s contribution is $30k but the estimate is that $150k is needed. Even our current top national rider Daniel Chucky Sanders had to flip burgers at events to get funds together. And all this on the back of Toby Price winning the Dakar – the biggest off road race in the world – we have some of the best, if not THE best racers in the world so where is the support?

Trial Des Nations in ABC News reported in May 2016 that trials riders are now crowdfunding for their attendance at the Trial Des Nations in France in September. We were 4th in the International Trophy Group out of 16 in 2014 and 3rd in 2015 out of 15 countries. To date Kyle Middleton and the Australian trials team have raised $5,835 of a $25k goal through Go Fund Me (including $100 from Scooter News we might add)

3

MX Des Nations,

And finally the riding community is being asked to contribute to fund raising for the Aussies to get to MX des Nations in Italy, 24-25th September – the team was 7th in 2015.

KTM Australia, sending Kirk Gibbs over with the MXON team (which includes Jed Beaton and Dean Ferris), is even promoting a fund raising rider clinic following the next round of the MX Nationals:

Help raise funds for Team Australia to attend the 2016 Motocross of Nations, at the same time earning yourself some valuable coaching by Australia's best MX riders! Book in now for the Rider Development Clinic, to be held on Monday 29th August, following the MX Nationals at Coolum! And the racing community is resorting to auctioning off prizes such as memorabilia donated by mx legend Jeff Leisk: Support Team Australia and own a piece of motocross history! A signed Bieffe motocross helmet from the legend himself - Jeff Leisk - is on auction to raise funds for the 2016 Australian Motocross of Nations Team. This immaculate helmet was worn by Jeff in the late 80's and is an amazing collectors item for any MX fan!

What are your thoughts? How should our great sport be funded. Who should be funding it? And where should the funding be coming from? As always we would love to know your ideas.

Rant over! ******************************************************************************

DMCC / MK1 MOTORCYCLES OFF – ROAD CHAMPS ROUND 6 Traralgon MCC, 21st August

Loy Yang Park, Traralgon MCC Well Tuesday may be exciting for you all this week as you are getting to read Scooter News, but for me – it’s operation hernia time. Going under the knife. So what do you do when you know you are not going to be able to ride for a few weeks? You take as many of your bikes as you can to the track and ride them all day! So that’s what I did this Sunday at round 6 of the Dandenong MCC off club champs at Traralgon. But I couldn’t keep all the fun to myself so photographer Jo, Aaron Bonfadini and Shaun Leslie aka Captain Risky also came along.

Rider’s briefing - over 110 riders today Elizabeth Lee wins Me and Mick with a Shinko tyre shirts from Harrison RRR

Spencer Harrison (Harrison’s RRR for all your Porsche needs) and his brand new KTM150 EXC were parked next to us, and Wayne Newton and son Jack joined us under the quick shade as Wayne also wanted to have a ride on my KTM250 EXC - he’s thinking he might go 2 stroke next year and I said ‘try the orange, you’ll like it!’ and I think he did.

My role for the day was to sweep ride, keep an eye on the riders, help the juniors, watch for hot lines as they developed, replace bunting etc and clean up at the end of the day. So I mainly rode my two vintage KTMs – the 250GS has been cleaned up after Harrow by Paul Day at Ride Well Motorcycles, and I also brought along my 1988 350GS tractor. Aaron had a ride on both – I wanted him to appreciate his riding heritage, as his dad Frank ‘Bomber’ Bonfadini used to

5

race a 350 back in the day for Bert Flood. And even Captain Risky took that one out for a spin. And he’s a Kawasaki rider.

The format was head to head sprints – which I love and so do the other riders. It just makes the sprints format more competitive and you get to push yourself along with a rider of similar ability. The riders did half of the mx track before heading into the bush, past the quarry, over the hill and into the far paddock before returning to the mx track for a couple of corners.

Frank Gogol aka The Pres Jack Newton #100, 3rd in A Grade, 6th outright

Head to head all the way round for these two C Graders Ray Borg #103 and Adam Yendall #127 As ever, Jo was out there with the trusty Nikon snapping away happily even despite the odd light shower. We have chosen Yarram’s Matthew Zygarlicki #411 on his Beta 300rr as our cover shot this week – he won A Grade convincingly and also recorded the fastest lap of the day. Watch out for him at the VORC rounds coming up.

Matthew Zygarlicki #411 Anyway, plenty more going on out there so here’s some pics:

If I’d known Aaron was doing this on my 250GS…

Col Ellen #509, wins Over 40s B Grade Dex Kelly #715 from Kooweerup MCC, 4th in J4

9

The Pres is so tough on the juniors ‘get your leg up – that’s right, now stand up!’ Lots of new faces at this round

Owen Leehane #600, J3 James Croft #363, 7th in B Grade

Trent Tucci #294 clipped a tree stump and busted his toe on lap 3. Kept going though, 8th in A Grade

10

Caption this: Jack Gogol and Ryley Oakes lining up in J4 Jake wins J4, and fastest junior lap

Max Bowring #456, J4. Dad Warren says he eats 22 Weetbix every morning No wonder he’s heading to 6 foot tall

Lou Stylianou and Wayne Vandenburg, O’40 A Daniel Sharp #1, in his first race. Aiming high

11

Three first-timers took out the top 3 spots in C Grade - #416 Dan Wright was third, Bailey Davis #455 was second and Ash Brady #644 was first

Yes that suits you Wayne. Now go buy your own Nathan Boyle #346, B Grade

Captain Risky through the trees Aaron gets yet another lecture on riding smart. Poor kid

Joshua Watson #314 taking on Wil Barbary #606 out in the back paddock

12

The smaller bikes still got to do a big part of the track

James Lawton #242 leads the conga line up to the finish And with sprints there’s always time for a chat

It was all over by 2:30pm – I don’t think I could have ridden any more and the leg cramp on the way home confirmed this. I’ll miss being on the bike but it won’t be long and I’ll be back – who knows what I will have on the go after tinkering in the shed.

Many thanks to the Dandenong MCC for a well organised day. Bryan Noble, Jeff Graham, Frank Gogol, Justin on Mylaps, the sign in crew – Lisa, Linda, Lynda, and Tracie, Brad Lewis, Tony and Heather Lee, Kurt Goodman, Nathan Heap, the sweeps (Nick, Daniel, Adam Cornthwaite, Aaron – and me!), the first aiders on hand but not bothered too badly, and the Traralgon MCC for getting everything ready for us.

And finally to the sponsors, MK1 Motorcycles, and Harrisons RRR – with support from Bruce Collins Enterprises and those impressive Shinko tyres. Please give them your support.
