PROJECT DETAILS When did the project take place and when this was completed? The project received Your Voice Your Choice funding of £9,999 in August 2016. Building works commenced in February 2017 and were completed in November 2017. Have you achieved the Project Aims from your original application? Yes, the project has provided an asset for the whole community to use which includes the local people of Buchanhaven and other communities within Peterhead and from surrounding areas. The Boat Shed provides space for boat building, for groups to come together for various social events and a learning environment with a focus on local fishing culture.

Our goal was to build a large boat shed/workshop area where local Fishermen would be able to carry out repairs to their traditional fishing boats and make creels. Instead, we have been able to build a much better project due to securing more funding. We’ve managed to build a disabled toilet facility, a small kitchen area and finish the Boat Shed to a much higher standard than originally anticipated. We have also been lucky enough to secure more funding through Your Voice Your Choice to have a state of the art sea-life aquarium which will be used to help educate local schoolchildren and the wider community for a lifetime.

Are there any aspects which went particularly well? Our project got started in December 2016 when our team purchased an unused plot of wasteland which could only be described as a jungle. We then managed to get planning permission granted and building commenced in February 2017. There have been many positive outcomes which have been developed as part of this project to date including;  The funding received from Your Voice Your Choice has helped to establish the project and to secure further grants from NESFLAG (North East Fisheries Local Action Group), Awards for All and Council. Overall the project has secured funding of approximately £100,000 (Confirmed 2018).  The project has been well supported by members of the local community who have undertaken a number of fundraising activities to help build the funding required. Fundraising events have included Galas and Karaoke Nights and have been well attended by people from across Peterhead.  Organisations and local Contacts within Peterhead have provided support to the project and this has included Jimmy Buchan, Fisherman from the ‘Trawlermen’ TV Series and Peterhead Port Authority.  Workmanship and cost – support from local tradesmen working with community members has helped to develop the project.  The project has helped members of Buchanhaven Harbour Committee to create working links with other groups from Your Voice Your Choice E.g. Men’s Shed. Plans to share resources and assist each other to develop projects in the future is an aspiration for this project.

 The Boat Shed has plans to provide a learning environment accessible to Schools and Community Groups and to help achieve this, is now working with other facilities such as MacDuff Aquarium. The Boat Shed will include a live exhibit of local sea life in the future and a focus on the history of the fishing community of Buchanhaven.  Delivering the project has provided members of the group with numerous learning opportunities and members feel that they could support other groups in the future to achieve similar aims. Is there anything that you would do differently? The project hasn’t come without its challenges – cables and sewers not on the plans, delays on the project by months, extra unforeseen costs, cutting off everyone’s electricity in the area one suppertime and changes to the project and plans. The one thing we would have done differently would have been to have gotten more advice about services on the site. However, we have ended up with a much better end product than originally projected.

PEOPLE WHO HAVE BENEFITTED FROM THIS PROJECT Approximately how many people benefitted? Over 200 people have been involved in the project and it is expected that this number will rise following the official opening of the Boat Shed scheduled to take place in May 2018. In addition to this, the project has had regular fundraising activities and monies raised through this have been donated to other projects within Peterhead to help provide benefits to the wider community. This is something which the Buchanhaven Harbour Committee plans to continue with in the future. What groups were they from, e.g. young people? The project has attracted people of all ages and abilities and the Buchanhaven Harbour Committee has encouraged participation from anyone interested in getting involved.

Did they provide comments or feedback that you can tell us about? Feedback relating to the development of the Boat Shed has been ongoing, with people commenting throughout on being encouraged to see progress. The Buchanhaven Harbour Committee operate a Facebook page which provides regular updates about the group and the projects it develops. This has generated 1456 likes to date.

‘I think it’s an inspirational community initiative that will inject a sense of community pride. It is a fantastic local resource which will provide knowledge of local sea life and reinject the culture and history of our community. It also holds great potential for intergenerational work and you should be very proud’. Victoria Cameron, Local Buchanhaven Resident and Headteacher of Port Erroll Primary School,

‘We here at Buchanhaven School are very much looking forward to the opening of the Buchanhaven Boat Shed. To have such a facility on our doorstep will prove invaluable as a resource for school and we are also excited to know that some members of the Buchanhaven Harbour Trust would also be available to visit school to talk to us about our local heritage and the rich history of the area. It is vital that such projects exist in our area to ensure that the heritage and traditions remain alive’. Linda Strachan, Headteacher, Buchanhaven School

Were they involved in the planning and delivery of the Project? Yes, the Buchanhaven Harbour Committee has sought to involve as many members of the community as possible to assist with development of the Boat Shed. Community Members have helped to clear the site, to assist in project management, to fundraise and to help set up the Boat Shed so that it can provide learning and socialising opportunities e.g. boat building.

HOW THIS PROJECT HAS HELPED MAKE A DIFFERENCE What benefits has the Project provided to the local community? How do you know this? Please provide any additional supporting evidence. The project has helped to make a difference to the local community by providing a new purpose for a derelict piece of land that can now be used as an asset by the whole community of Peterhead and surrounding areas. It has empowered Community Members to come together to work on a project which will bring many benefits in the short, medium, and long term across health & wellbeing themes for reducing social isolation, building social connectivity, providing learning opportunities and developing self-esteem and confidence. A booklet has been produced by the Buchanhaven Harbour Committee which highlights key stages of the development of the Boat Shed. Do you anticipate any long-term benefits? The Boat Shed has developed links with all the local primary schools in Peterhead and surrounding areas such as Cruden Bay, and Headteachers are keen to incorporate the facility into future educational programmes. Numerous projects are expected to be developed now that the Boat Shed is complete and will include practical initiatives such as creel making and crafts as well as delivering benefits for social connectivity to bring people and groups together.

HARBOUR COMMITTEE TESTIMONIAL ‘This project was made possible because of Your Voice Your Choice and the funding and support which we received. We had never done anything like this before, we just had an idea, but we didn’t know how to take this forward and we weren’t very confident either. The Boat Shed will make a huge difference to local people and we believe we have learnt a lot developing this project – we would be happy to support other groups to help them achieve their goals’. Arthur James McKenzie, Chair of Buchanhaven Harbour Committee
