Biographical / Historical Strand Opera House opened in 1909 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and showcased operas, travelling shows, symphonies, and plays. After a destructive fire in 1930, the Strand reopened as a movie theatre owned by Phil Smith and Theatrical Enterprises. This theatre catered to locals as well as out-of-town upscale clientele, and it proudly screened first run films. Page 1 of 37 Strand Theatre Collection NMAH.AC.1490 Content Description The collection consists of over 420 daily programs for the Strand Theatre in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Also included are two photographs of the theater and about a dozen flyers, tickets, and advertising materials. Arrangement The collection is arranged into three series. The programs are arranged chronologically.
