Working in Croydon

In recent years Croydon has seen the dawn of a new chapter in its history as one of the most thriving towns in South . With the emergence of a start-up technology community, a flourishing arts and cultural scene, and the regeneration of its town centre, the future is bright. Identified as a Growth Zone, Croydon is well on its way to fulfilling Boris Johnson’s description of the town as the ‘Economic Powerhouse of South London’.

The town has enjoyed a rich history. It was once the countryside retreat of archbishops and their households, a stop-off on the road from Lambeth Palace to Canterbury, and has hosted the likes of Henry III, VI and VIII, as well as Elizabeth I. It is also home to the country’s oldest market, Surrey Street Market, which has been trading since 1276.

Croydon has benefitted from its proximity to both London and the South Coast for many years, allowing those who live and work here to get in to the capital and out to surrounding towns and villages easily via well-established rail, bus and tram routes. 27 million people travel through East Croydon’s rail network each year, reaching London Gatwick airport in 16 minutes and central London in 18 minutes. Regular train services connect the town with the city via London Bridge, and the West End via Victoria. Trams link to Wimbledon, Beckenham, Elmers End and New Addington, with proposals for extensions to Sutton and Crystal Palace.

There are numerous projects underway bringing large-scale developments across Croydon, including the world’s tallest modular building at 101 George Street, the reconstruction of East Croydon station which will also increase capacity on the Brighton Main Line, the completion of Phase 1 of Mentra’s Morello providing more than 340 new homes and a 2 million sq ft complex of offices, homes and shops including the new Boxpark Croydon.

With both technology start-up and multi-national businesses moving to Croydon, working here has never felt more exciting. In Croydon you can enjoy all the benefits of living and working in a town near the capital, but not be far away from the countryside, with both the Surrey Hills and North Downs a few minutes’ drive from the town centre. Cultural highlights include the newly refurbished Fairfield Halls following a £42 million restoration, a street art collection recognised as one of the largest in Europe and a number of festivals aimed at bringing the community together.

For over 400 years The John Whitgift Foundation have been educating the young and caring for the elderly. This was the vision of the founder Archbishop John Whitgift and his legacy allows us to put back into the community. Trinity School is at the heart of this academic excellence and I look forward to receiving your application to join us.
