CAREER DEVELOPMENT CAREER PANELS CONCLUDE The 2016-2017 Career Panel Series concluded in the month of April with the General Studies Panel. This panel was unique in that it featured professionals from different industries for our sophomore student-athletes who are undecided in their career pursuit. It allowed those in attendance to gain a plethora of insight from a variety of industries in hopes of learning more about what each industry consists of. These events go a long way in helping sophomores continue to develop their career plans and ambitions. General Studies Career Panelists David Breedlove- Physical Therapist, Champion Sports Medicine/UA Athletics Terrance Dedrick - Financial Advisor, Raymond James Natalie Ledford - Business Analyst, State Farm Insurance & Color Analyst/ Broadcaster - SEC Network Erika Nist, Swimming & Diving Corporate Compliance Officer Seattle-Tacoma Box Company “This June, I will be starting my job as a Corporate Compliance Officer at Seattle-Tacoma Box Company in Seattle, Washington. My responsibilities include working alongside another co-worker to ensure the company’s compliance with a variety of different organizations and national/international laws, including the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Upon starting, I will be shadowing each major department to get a feel for what exactly it is that they do. From there, I will then write procedures each department must follow to be in compliance with the law. Once that is complete, an auditor will come in to approve those procedural methods. I am really looking forward to having new challenges every day, learning new skills that will help this process move forward, and making new connections with people across the country. The University of Alabama has provided me with many great resources throughout my time here so I feel prepared professionally to start my new position. The D.R.I.V.E. For Success program and it’s staff have greatly aided my development by teaching me the value of networking/making connections, developing relationships, and making yourself as marketable as possible.” Dedication • Responsibility • Influence • Vision • Excellence 111 CAREER DEVELOPMENT FIRST SEC SCHOOL TO HOST espnW CAMPUS CONVERSATIONS In April, more than 200 University of Alabama female student-athletes gathered in Coleman Coliseum for an inaugural event within the Southeastern Conference, espnW Campus Conversations, about the "great pivot" and other topics that impact the growth, empowerment, and maturation of female athletes. The night featured student-athletes gaining great information and insight from a panel and subsequent breakout sessions of four former Alabama standout athletes - Kathy (Biloudeau) Varney (gymnastics, 1985-88), Brittany (Rogers) Mayweather (softball, 2006-09), Courtney (McLane) Courtney (tennis, 2009-12) and Nia Barnes (track and field, 2012-15) - and moderated by ESPN broadcaster Holly Rowe and Natalie Ledford, a color volleyball analyst for the SEC Network. Under the umbrella of the event's overarching topic, "the great pivot", the panelists engaged in a wide-ranging dialogue about moving on to the next phase of life after graduation, including how to leverage and embrace their strengths as student-athletes, what pitfalls to avoid, and how to move forward from mistakes. In addition to providing examples from their own experiences, the panelists gave concrete "how-to’s" in terms of networking, interviewing and choosing the next steps. The student-athletes and the panelists also had the opportunity to interact prior to the event in a "red carpet" setting as well after the panel came to a close in one-on-one and group conversations. There was strong engagement not only between the student-athletes and the panelists, but on social media as well, where the events hashtag #espnWatBama was trending on Twitter both during and after the event. "It was so great hearing from women who were in our shoes as student-athletes not too long ago and seeing where they are now, as well as hearing how they got there. It was definitely encouraging, and the panel of women definitely urged us to follow our dreams, to not back down from a challenge, and to craft a plan to help us get to where we want to be. They gave us some great insights and tips on how to become a professional, what hiring managers look for on resumes, how to dress for success.” Caroline Korst - Alabama swimmer and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president Dedication • Responsibility • Influence • Vision • Excellence 111 D.R.I.V.E. PROFESSIONAL TIP OF THE MONTH RESUME TIPS TO GET HIRED IN 2017 1. Proofread your resume: Go back and make sure that every word is correctly placed and spelled. Then, go back and double-check that! 2. Don’t use a crazy font: Using a non-traditional font is pretty distracting and can often suggest a lack of professionalism. 3. Limit the details: It is challenging to know what to include or exclude from your resume. The best way to do so is to keep a “master” resume with all of your experiences. When applying for a specific position, use the job description of that position to identify what information to use on your resume. 4. Save it right to send it right: After spending a lot of time writing your resume, it would be a shame if an employer was unable to open it. The best way to save and send your file is in a PDF form. *Information gathered from redventures.com LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP WISDOM FROM COACH BATTLE The final meeting of the 2016-2017 was a joint dinner with both the Crimson Catalysts and Legacy Leaders in attendance. Former Alabama Director of Athletics, Bill Battle was the featured speaker for the evening. Coach Battle shared with the young leaders some leadership wisdom and advice from his time in college athletics from the perspective he gained as a an Alabama football student-athlete, a head football coach at The University of Tennessee, Founder and Owner of the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC), and most recently, as Alabama’s Athletic Director. Though Coach Battle shared a plethora of great information throughout his talk, he left the young leaders with a few characteristics that he looked for amongst his players as a coach, and as a business owner and athletic director in the people that he hired: 1. Character - Without clearly established character and integrity, it is hard to believe in people for leadership positions. If ever trust comes into play it is difficult to attain the kind of team chemistry needed to attain the highest levels of success. Integrity is earned and not given. 2. Work-Ethic - Everyone gets good at those things they spend time working hard to accomplish. Important for us to make sure we are working on the right things and the things that will have the most impact. 3. Commitment - Crucial for organizational success is to be “all-in” toward the mission. Alabama Athletics' mission is to recruit and develop student-athletes to compete at the highest levels in intercollegiate athletics; to educate and prepare those student athletes to compete at the highest levels in life after graduation; and to do both with honor and integrity. 4. Teamwork - The essence of teamwork is everyone doing their job to the very best of their ability and doing the common tasks uncommonly well. Every role is important and when all perform, mountains can be moved.
